Sources: Oregon, Washington set to join Big Ten

Oregon and Washington are finalizing a deal to join the Big Ten Conference, which would expand to 18 members in 2024, sources told ESPN.

The departures put Oregon and Washington's former conference, the century-old Pac-12, in flux. Arizona has applied to and been admitted to the Big 12, ESPN sources said, although that deal has yet to be finalized. And conversations between the Big 12 and Utah and Arizona State ramped up Friday, sources said.

Northwest Youth Corps helping create neighborhood defensible spaces

In the Eugene/Springfield area, the Northwest Youth Corps works with Eugene Springfield Fire to identify neighborhoods that are potentially at risk if a wildfire were to come through. One that has been identified is the Laurel Hill neighborhood near Hendricks Park.

Danny Woodcock, who lives in the area, says that his house was massively overgrown last fall, with some bushes nearly coming in contact with power lines. "I was about to call the City and say, 'Do you think we should have you guys trim that?'" Woodcock said. "That's when [Northwest Youth Corps] came in and saved the day."

CAHOOTS merges with Eugene Springfield Fire

The mobile crisis intervention program CAHOOTS is now merging with Eugene Springfield Fire, according to local authorities.

Officials said the decision followed a review last year of the organization’s budget and data. Ultimately, it was determined that the move was best for what the program needs, though local fire officials said it won’t change how CAHOOTS operates.

Oregon drivers may soon have the choice to pump their own gas

Oregon lawmakers on Wednesday voted to end a prohibition on self-serve gas that’s been in place since 1951.

House Bill 2426 would require gas stations to staff at least half of their open pumps for people who want assistance. But it would allow other pumps to be open for self-service.
