I disagree with some of their assessment. Specifically the point that you really aren't given enough information to weigh out which decisions you go with and that is something problematic. Unknowns are pretty inherent with Dungeons and Dragons. In tabletop, you typically don't know what the outcome is going to be. You can only veer towards decisions you think will be a net positive and then hope you make your rolls.

With a couple of exceptions, no decision you make is really game over for you. It just changes how the story unfolds.

Before Baldur's Gate was a thing, I remember reading Homeland by RA Salvatore. It was 1994 and my sister gave it to be as a bday present. I couldn't put it down and it firmly cemented me into Dungeons & Dragons. I already had been playing some gold box games like Hillsfar, but that book got me seriously addicted.

My suggestion is to avoid any cringey back story. Seems like all characters have some edgy drama they center on. Instead, have a really boring backstory like you're a retiree who is just looking to pass the time. Something you can kinda chuckle at to break the tension with having to roleplay.

Or, if you have to have an elaborate backstory here is one I've used: your character's mind broke after whatever happened (like old age) and they believe they have made a pact granting them warlock powers. They don't have those powers and are just going batty, so just work it out with the dm where you "cast" hexblade but just do a normal attack. So you're just a fighter really but you'll be pretending you aren't with the other players.

I remember when Pathfinder Kingmaker released there was a very vocal group that said the game was too difficult and they were forced to save scum. Now everything in that game basically had a slider and you could completely customize difficulty, but that meant you were changing it to the forbidden option labeled "Easy". The pride these people had, they just couldn't do it.

The funniest part of it is that Owlcat did fix it. That group's attitude was very much "finally, it's playable. About time". However, all that Owlcat did was move those sliders for them and renamed it normal mode.

My understanding was it's bad practice to host images on Lemmy instances anyway as it contributes to storage bloat. Instead of coming up with a one-off script solution (albeit a good effort), wouldn't it make sense to offload the scanning to a third party like imgur or catbox who would already be doing that and just link images into Lemmy? Yeah, those people are so heavily invested in this game that it has to be great at all costs. I mean dropping $100 just to play a few days early and the subsequent justifications made after the fact really speak to that.

I use Lae'zel for my evil run, but she does have kind of that evil cat vibe. Like how every cat not only acknowledges it is a cat, but somehow feels that it is the epitome of what it means to be a cat.

Also, as I think it's pointed out, githyanki are canonically space Nazis. Early in her character arc there is definitely the notion that she is only helping you to help herself and that she has no problem with "final solutioning" you.

I have no issue with AI in tabletop roleplaying. Being able to create an NPC and just define its position and what it's motivations are could lead to some really organic interesting gameplay.

I totally disagree with how that articles author lumps in AI with NFTs too. AI is supplemental. It's just a tool to further expand on existing technology like search engine optimization. NFTs don't provide anything like that. They are just gimmicks.

Oh man, you brought up a really good point. There's the albums, and then there's the merch. Metallica junkies would have like 20 band shirts and so much Metallica swag all over their places. Those guys would drop thousands of dollars. They lived for that music. When Lars came out and was basically "it's about the money" so many fans stopped caring about the music. When they stopped caring about the music they stopped buying the merch.

Probably not relevant to the console players, but mods and patches always interest me.
