Hakeem Jeffries rejects GOP spending bill as ‘unserious and unacceptable’

Reply in thread

In case you're asking in good faith... The downside is that non-citizens voting is simply not a problem. The number of cases is extremely low, there's nothing to "fix" here. The biggest impact of this policy would be that actual American citizens who do not have, or lost, or forgot to bring their proof of citizenship will not be able to vote. It will predominantly affect poor and marginal populations. People that don't have a passport, don't have easy access to their birth certificate, or aren't aware of the new regulation. Fewer people voting is 100% the goal with this policy.

I am starting the process to immigrate to Canada from the US. Maybe unsurprisingly I find I have no ideas where I would like to live. I do enjoy mountains, and don't want to be in the heart of a city.

You'll still need a work permit to work in Canada, even for a US company remotely. So hopefully you're up to speed on that process. In terms of where to live, there are some places in BC outside major cities that are affordable. Might be worth taking a road trip around to check some out

Fluid in eye cells can 'boil' if you watch the eclipse without protection: expert

Reply in thread

The eclipse is more dangerous actually... The visible light is reduced so your pupil expands. But a lot of UV light comes from the corona of the sun which isn't blocked during the eclipse. So your pupils are more open allowing in more of the harmful UV light. And to add to it, your eyes don't realize they are being harmed by UV light without the visible so you don't have that impulse to look away.

Vancouver Island landfill ordered to remove and destroy 'triggering' Halloween sign

Reply in thread

There's no fault here, imo...the person that put up the sign probably wasn't thinking about events in Winnipeg. But that doesn't change the fact that someone was killed and thrown away like trash. This sign pokes fun (albeit unintentionally) at a very real and raw situation. It's fair to ask them to remove the sign, so as not to put the families of these missing women through more pain.

I know nearly nothing about Canadian politics. Are liberals really better than conservatives?

Reply in thread

I agree with the other two commenters. Also in my opinion, Trudeau had some good policy but terrible PR around it. The "carbon tax" should never had been called a tax from the beginning...most people got more money back, but everyone thought they were paying the tax. And Trudeau grew up in politics on the public stage. He took advantage of his privelige at times and wasn't always careful with the optics of his actions. Too many opportunities for his opposition to criticize him and turn public favour against him.

Is this true, Canada?

Reply in thread

Yep, worked there during the changeover. 2003-04ish. I actually loved working there under the old management, the food was good, quality was the priority. Then the fryers left, replaced by industrial microwaves...but we still baked the muffins. I'm sure even those are frozen/reheated these days.

Thousands of US workers are on strike today. Here's a rundown of major work stoppages happening now

There's no simple answer to your question, just like there's no quick solution to the problem of inequality. But one premise you've mentioned isn't quite correct. The democratic party hasn't really been "ruling" for most of that time. They've controlled the presidency, yes. But for all except 2 years, they haven't controlled Congress (it's been either divided or republican controlled), and they haven't controlled the supreme court. That said, a lot of Democrats are still happy to push the status quo, and there's plenty of warranted criticism to go around.
