Speaking of embarrassing.
@[email protected] To be fair it seems like he was reviewing it partly asking if it would be worth buying if you already spent $50 on King of Fighters 98 the previous year? I'm scared to think of what their Third Strike review would look like. Now I get why Marvel VS Capcom 2 added the weird 3d backgrounds. If you didn't have any 3d these reviewers would put your game in a body bag.

@[email protected] In fact in my opinion the one thing that makes KOF 98 feel more dated than Third Strike is the sprite scaling and that's the most technologically advanced part of the game, haha.

@[email protected] I also really think game devs that think of their game as a sum of its parts make much worse games than those who have a vision of the project as a whole.

Massive feature on Dead or Alive for the Sega Saturn.
@[email protected] Man the way they gush about this game compared to actually playing it is wild. I struggle to enjoy any 3D fighters from before Tekken 3. That was the first one I got into.

@[email protected] It seems like maybe you have got a real soft spot for saturn/model 2 but I can relate. Those games have a really distinct feel to them! I was so excited about the dreamcast because that was sort of the peak and death of the arcade at the same time.

I always find it fascinating to see unreleased games appear in magazines.
@[email protected] It sounds like maybe they didn't figure out the gameplay well enough considering they were 80% done with what sounds like 2 half hearted game modes? It'd be cool to see post cancelation dev logs about the specific issues that led to the cancelation.

@[email protected] I completely agree. Some of the best games of all time would lose a lot of points in a category or two but when viewed as a whole deserve a perfect score while some mediocre games are technically good in a lot of categories.

@[email protected] It seems like there is some sort of 'gameplay formula' that they use, doesn't it? I know a lot of the artists are incredible there though.

@[email protected] Is the percentage totally independent of the X/5 scores above it? It looks like they add up to the score but 3+3+5+4=15 and 15x5=75

Lykia is one of those games that look stunning, but that I could never get into.

@[email protected] Yeah it is just a weird thing to do to judge something based on the technology used rather than the content itself. It's like if a great book was printed on a scroll you'd say it sucks or if you reduced the score for not having an eReader version.
