If you care about privacy, these are the Google Keep alternatives to switch to

Reply in thread

Thank you!!! It’s crazy how I feel like no one is talking about it, but there isn’t a FOSS alternative to Google Keep. I tried Joplin, Standard Notes, Logseq, Anytype, etc., but none of them are pleasant to use on mobile. (On the other hand, they are good alternatives to Notion, but that’s not what I’m looking for)

I use Notesnook which I find is complete and not bad at all on pc, but the mobile interface is as unintuitive as the other ones mentioned before...

Beaver Notes seems to be a plausible alternative for now, but is today too unstable and too early in its state (as far as the iOS app is concerned anyway).

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

I don't see anyone talking about it here but I'd dream of an open source alternative to AndroidTV/Apple Tv. Firstly because ATV is ultra-dependent on Google, and secondly because the interface is unclear and not really pretty.

Today I've switched to Apple TV, which is much better in terms of UX, but the OS is too closed and sideloading isn't possible...

So I hope to see some sort of CalyxOS / LineageOS for Tv arrive one day!

New Proton Auth App: Should You Use It?

Reply in thread

Proton Pass already has built-in authentication keys. The proton auth application is more for those who want to separate dual authentication from their password manager, or for those who don’t use proton services but want to have a european dual authentication application. But I admit that the separation of services into multiple applications confuses the issue.

Private way to use Google Maps on iOS

Reply in thread

I didn't want to justify my choice, but I have a slight handicap in my hand that prevents me from using large smartphones easily. (Malformation of the little finger)

Try and find me an Android phone the size of my iPhone 13 mini were you can put a privacy friendly os, and yes, we'll talk.

I've been on CalyxOs for over two years, but the pixels are too big, so the iPhone 13 mini was the best compromise for my privacy and my disability.

I know it's not perfect, but that's no reason to criticise it gratuitously without knowing the context.

What's more, Apple Maps in France isn't very effective, so it's not a convincing alternative.

The Magic Earth application now comes with a charge

Reply in thread

For me, the CoMaps (or OrganicMaps) application is pretty good for the map side of things. On the other hand, when it comes to navigation, I find Magic Earth much more complete (speed camera display, better traffic management, optimized interface for landscape navigation, reporting of road events, better precision of lanes to follow, and I'm forgetting many others).

Proton Launches Private AI Chatbox Called Lumo

Reply in thread

I understand your point of view, but I think that in today’s society, a company can’t afford to fall too far behind when it comes to current uses. I’m perfectly aware of the risks that AI brings, but if it can enable some people to find a -private- way out of American AI, I think it’s a good thing.

Proton Drive roadmap: Product updates coming this winter and spring | Proton

As a light user of the drive, I find that Proton Drive is clearly the worst product from Proton. I use the office-focused functions very little, but I really find that the photo part is quite lacking.

On one hand, the transfer speed is quite slow, and on the other, the functions are extremely limited. Between the inconvenient interface, no search options, no folders, no information on the exif metadata, etc...

Moreover, I think that even if the storage space for photos should be allocated from the drive's storage, it is necessary to create a separate application dedicated to the photo gallery. It is not natural to have to click on a file logo of the Proton Drive app to access your gallery.

In the meantime, I will stick with ente.io because it is the only truly convincing alternative to Google Photos in terms of features, compatibility, speed, and simplicity…
