Joe Biden Is Arming Greece So Greece Can Arm Ukraine—And Pro-Russia Republicans Can’t Stop Him

Great news!

Apropos nothing:

The Republicans are falling in line with disgraced ex-president Donald Trump’s personal hatred of Ukraine—and equally personal fondness for authoritarian Russia. The Republicans’ allegiance to Trump—and therefore to dictators and military aggressors—wasn’t an issue for Ukraine until they narrowly gained control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the November 2022 elections. When earlier funding for Ukraine ran out in late December, Rep. Mike Johnson—the extremist House speaker—refused to put additional aid to a vote.

The direct language is a pleasant surprise, and honestly more than I expected from FORBES. Have they always been this willing to call out Trump and his enablers?

Elon Musk doesn't show at Philadelphia hearing over super PAC's $1 million lottery for voters

  • This is a lawsuit, not criminal charges. It could be bad for Musk (see: Engoron decision) but there is no risk of arrest or jail. Yet.
  • Defendants who lose lawsuits cannot be pardoned. Only criminal charges can be pardoned.
  • "All parties must be present" means someone on the defendant's side must be present. It is not unusual for only the lawyer(s) to attend.
  • The case has been moved to federal court for now. But it could be moved back if the federal court decides it belongs in state court.

Trump posts nearly $92 million bond in E. Jean Carroll defamation case | CNN Politics

Reply in thread

It was definitely not directly from Trump.

Insurance company Chubb underwrote the bond for Trump, which the former president signed on Tuesday. Under the terms of the bond, Chubb will only secure the appeal of the $83.3 million judgment, not any future appeals.

Let me save you some trouble:

Chubb Limited is an American company incorporated in Zürich, Switzerland. It is the parent company of Chubb, a global provider of insurance products covering property and casualty, accident and health, reinsurance, and life insurance and is the largest publicly traded property and casualty insurance company in the world

I took a trip to Trump country. It was more bleak than I could have imagined

FWIW, a few weeks ago I went to a Midwestern county fair. The state went blue in 2020 but this particular county voted 60% Trump, higher than the one in the article (56%).

Before I arrived I braced for the worst.

Nothing. No one sold Trump merch. At most I saw one or two people who brought their Trump hats or t-shirts. There was a monster truck show and the announcer never mentioned politics. I counted a handful of Trump bumper stickers in the parking lot.

Zero Trump yard signs spotted on the road back to where we were staying, even though there were lots and lots of yard signs for various county or municipal candidates. So they weren't completely disengaged politically.

I'm sure many of the people I saw will vote for Trump again this year. But they weren't so willing to advertise that.

'Embarrassing': Harris team taunts Trump over latest debate drama

Reply in thread

Probably because they think when (not if) Trump blabbers while Harris is trying to speak, it will make Trump look bad in front of undecided voters. I think they're right.

Team Harris might even try to pull a Chris Christie, who predicted what Rubio would say and watched his prediction come true, eg

Harris: "As a former prosecutor, I believe in following the rules. But Trump believes rules don't apply to him. He's not supposed to interrupt me, but he just did a moment ago. And mark my words: he will do it again soon, because -"

Trump: "No I won't!"

Alex Jones must pay $1.1 billion of Sandy Hook damages despite bankruptcy - court

Reply in thread

Alex Jones and/or his lawyers were too stupid to show up to court and defend themselves, so Jones automatically lost a defamation lawsuit without anyone even proving that Jones lied.

Wow, you might be thinking, that's great for these plaintiffs but surely nobody else would be dumb enough to ignore a defamation lawsuit and thus instantly lose! Well, let me introduce you to a certain Donald J Trump.
