Pence to launch presidential bid in Des Moines
Too christo-fascist for any sane person, but not fascist enough for the MAGA movement. Too bad, Pence.
Really, who does he hope to win over? The people who built the gallows for him?

St. Louis County Library to add social workers to several branches
Libraries, one of most valuable public resources. Shame that they're constantly under attack from the GOP fascists.

Been doing alright so far. Haven't noticed any blips since late yesterday I believe.

St. Louis County town tows cars from driveways with expired tags
Now I know that we're at meme status when it comes to expired temp tags, but this seems a bit much. Where's the victim in that crime? Does it really warrant stealing someone's car from them? If the person couldn't afford the taxes in the first place, how do they expect them to afford to get it out of the impound and pay the taxes, when they can't drive to work? I suppose the answer is that they don't, and they just like ruining lives.
I wonder, will it change anything now that dealerships are required to collect taxes at time of sale? I guess that still won't affect personal sales.

I know it's different than the book but I've enjoyed them
I think Denethor had more regard for Faramir than most Tolkien fans have for The Hobbit movies. I know the only way I'll watch them anymore is the fan edit 4-hour cut that removes all the crap that wasn't in the book.

Des Peres residents will vote on whether to ban recreational pot shops
I thought this was newsworthy mostly because someone used the sentence "Just say no to drugs." unironically and as a serious argument in favor of banning something in the year 2023.

Libraries say they never offered ‘obscene’ materials, but Ashcroft’s rule has them scrambling
It's infuriating that we're letting these christo-fascists determine how the rest of us are allowed to live our lives. I wonder what it will take for us to reach that "Have you no sense of decency?" moment with them. But of course they don't, because that would require a conscience.

Howdy all. Think I'm figuring out how Lemmy and the Fediverse works. Neat stuff. Hoping to see midwest.social take off as reddit implodes.

Where to Get Free Emergency Contraception in St. Louis
Sam Page, still looking out for the well being of people in STL. I didn't know much about him before COVID and how he dealt with all of the anti-mask / antivax assholes, but every time I hear about something he's done it's been good for the community.
Also, obligatory: fuck christo-fascists.

For the record, I'm not commenting on this only because I'm not going to doxx myself. 😉
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF ST LOUIS-ISM COMPLETE. LET US NOW EAT GOOEY BUTTER CAKE AND PORK STEAKS AND TOASTED RAVIOLIS.

Judge hears arguments over Missouri AG push to inflate cost of abortion initiative petition • Missouri Independent
The rule of law means nothing to christo-fascists. They'll stop at nothing to enforce their regressive views on the rest of us. Expect more attempts to stop the will of the people from reestablishing reproductive health rights in our state.

I guess if it does we can call Des Peres "The City of NIMBYs".

Test cross-instance post
I found that if the community you want to cross post to isn't showing up in your login server's search results, go to the Communities search (filter for All), and then use the full Lemmy community syntax to search for it - "![email protected]" (make sure to include the exclamation mark).
Your server will then go out and index it and it will pop up in the search results within a few minutes. You'll then also be able to cross post to it.

Oh no, that broke the icon that displays in the browser tab and therefore the icon for the bookmark. :(
How about this one? It has a transparency layer and may work better (not sure what makes it appear in the browser tab properly, though) -
