Today we are celebrating our first birthday! 🍰🎈

As it's been a very busy year – full of new community members, new features, and more – we've written up a summary of all the things that have happened.

And to give all of you a small gift: If you press the Check Updates button in the 2026.05.06 version of CoMaps, you'll find some freshly updated maps that were quietly released for you yesterday!

Release 2026.05.06 is out on Codeberg, F-Droid, iOS, and soon on Google Play and brings a big new feature:

From this version onward, updating the map files of CoMaps is no longer tied to updating the app. Which means we can bring you fresh OpenStreetMap based maps more often!

Making an app like CoMaps does not just mean developing new features. It also requires ongoing work to make sure we don't accumulate technical debt and stay future proof. On our blog, contributor Jean-Baptiste outlines what work we've already done!

To allow all of our users to download offline maps reliably and quickly, we need servers in many different locations. Some of these servers are rented, thanks to the donations we get.

But some of them are also hardware donations, where we are allowed to use otherwise underused hardware! A big thanks go to Mathias Klein as well as the French OpenStreetMap chapter, who provide us with server capacities in Germany and France respectively!
