What's your pet deck?

[[Isperia the Inscrutable]]

This is the only commander deck I've consistently kept around over the years. I don't remember how I discovered this card, but I think it's a neat ability and the commander itself feels flavourful and badass. I started playing during Return to Ravnica, which perhaps added a bonus feeling of "wow, it's the original Isperia!".

My deck isn't terribly good since I don't play Commander very competetively. I've tried to have sphinxes and stuff that feel badass and fitting for the deck instead of busted combos or whatever. [[Medomai the Ageless]] is a typical target to search for.

The only "combo" I can think of off the top of my head (been a while since I've played the deck) is [[Bruna, the Fading Light]] and [[Gisela, the Broken Blade]]. I think that combo is hilarious due to the name of the melded card: Brisela. We ship Brisela.

What LTR cards are you excited about?

I only recently got kinda back into magic after a few years off (I played some Arena, though), and I haven't really looked at spoilers for this set. I am considering going to a prerelease, but I'm not a huge fan of bringing in other universes into magic, so it's not really my first choice for acquiring new cards. I suppose it also goes against my tentative interest in leaving Modern as a competetive format and trying out Pioneer. We'll see.

Right now I'm thinking more of casual stuff like EDH and Wizard's Tower that I can play with my girlfriend and other people who have a more casual appreciation for the game or who don't have their own decks. I guess I could do a LOTR Wizard's Tower, now that I think of it. Is it a good set for that?

Anyone else feel like the LOTR Prerelease was a bit grindy?

I didn't see any aggro, but my card pool contained a few cards that gave an indication that it could be possible to play aggro. Watch out for combat tricks, though! There's quite a few of them in every colour. At least blue and black also pack a few flash creatures.

My sealed pool had some decent low cost white creatures which I ran in my Esper deck (3 mana Eowyn and the 2 mana 3/1 that can sac itself to destroy artifact/enchantment were super nice).

I think Boros is equipment/token focused with some Human tribal and Rakdos is amass focused with some goblin/orc tribal. Black has the best hard removal, it seems, but white and red still pack some alright removal.

White has a neat 2/2 vigilance for 2 that can O-ring a creature if you sac a token (Food and 1/1s are pretty easy to find), so I feel like white is a really solid choice for aggro compared to black's slower sacrifice synergy cards (the best sac engine is a 5 mana 4/5). You should take my analysis with a pinch of salt though, since I never saw any red decks or aggro decks at the prerelease.

If you can get your hands on a Denethor you should definitely consider splashing a color for him (especially if you get the land that fixes colours for legendaries). He's an excellent finisher and value engine. Not a bad body (2/4) for 3 mana, either.

The +1/+1 sword for 1 mana that takes away abilities when blocking/being blocked is very convenient against the various cards that give indestructible/first strike/etc. I think it's a good card to have.

What are some Pauper legal cards you think are really cool, but haven't found a use for (at least not yet)?

Sultai Emissary and [[Bayou Groff]] have really good synergy. The Groff is a great manifest target and it can sac the emissary if you play it normally, but I don't quite see how I can make this work as a deck. It seems most people tend to want to abuse manifest by manifesting something huge and flickering it, but I feel that that line of play is a little bit too convoluted to be worth it, although it is nice that [[Soul Summons]] and [[Ephemerate]] are both white.

I think the trick to playing the Emissary is to have a decent volume of OK manifest targets in the deck, some sac value stuff and not overthinking it too much beyond that.

[[Scythe Tiger]] and [[Rogue Elephant]] are also good value manifest target, but their ETB effects are not so nice if you have them in hand. Perhaps in a sacrifice oriented deck they could be worthwhile if you just sac them as they ETB to trigger something like [[Mortician Beetle]]? Flipping a manifested Tiger in response to a removal spell is quite sexy, though.

June 2023 Commander Quarterly Update: No Changes; Orcish Bowmasters and Mirkwood Bats on watchlist

Tolarian Community College did a video listing the most powerful commander cards in LTR and Bats was the top card. It has a huge edge over Blood Artist and the like since it drains life with treasure tokens (twice!), and token generation in general is very common in many decks. It's a must-answer card that slots into a ton of decks, not just sacrifice engine decks.

I made a web site called HouseDraft that helps you run Swiss-style tournaments.

It could be nice to have an easier way to enter game wins and ties with the mouse. I appreciate that it's quick to do with the keyboard using the tab key, but there's a lot of clicking around when you want to do it with the mouse, and the "tickers" that let you add or subtract 1 are quite small (I know it's the default browser look, but maybe some custom styling is warranted here).

The official Wizards app they use at LGS' has buttons you can click to enter results like 2-1 and 2-0, I think, which could be nice if they look nice and feel intuitive.

I think carrion feed is a good idea, at least, but I would be careful about going too deep into pure sac outlets. The Groff and the Morkrut Behemoth are already doing double duty as good manifest targets and sac outlets (and decent topdecks). Higher creature density makes manifest better in general, though.

I worry that without sufficient card draw or filtering you can end up with some pretty dead hands. Perhaps [[Elven Farsight]] is a safe inclusion that will always be helpful and is great for setting up manifest, too.
