Looking for help in sorting music library (Album Artist Issues)

Hey all,

I recently just started saving the music I enjoy locally on my computer. I had a general idea of the music I liked, but never really compiled it into a collection before, and doing such has definitely been helping me better connect with the things I enjoy.

While things have overall been going well, there's this really annoying issue I've been having with MusicBee that on a cursory glance appears to be the same case with most other music players. Whenever I have a release with multiple album artists, namely with singles, MusicBee creates a new album artist entry marking the group of artists as a single artist entity.

To preface, the releases in question differ from "Various Artists" releases in that they usually have two artists collaborating on one track, or are tracks where a main artist guest features other artists. For example, I have a single titled "Search & Destroy" by "DJKurara & Supire", and instead of listing the release under the discographies of both DJKurara and Supire, it instead creates a new artist entry titled "DJKurara & Supire", which messes up the organisation of albums. Another example is a track I have called "FriendZoned" by "S3RL feat. Mixie Moon & MC Offside", where the album is organised under a new album artist entry of "S3RL feat. Mixie Moon & MC Offside", essentially treating the three working together as a new artist entirely, preventing it from being listed in S3RL's discography.

According to the fourth comment on the MusicBee forums here, this behaviour is intentional... which is hard for me to wrap my mind around. Is there any music library/player software where I can get these releases to sort properly where a release appears in the libraries of both musicians rather than an album artist entry separate from both? I'd prefer one where I don't need to edit the tags of the tracks, as I like keeping the tags as accurate as possible via MusicBrainz Picard, but this isn't an absolute requirement as I just want to keep my list of artists accurate.

Thanks in advance.

After half a year, we're back! Just, not on this instance.

Hi all,

First off I want to give a genuine apology for leaving this community inactive for so long. Life has generally been a bit busy these last few months, though now I hope to bring to community back to life once again!

The only catch is this. I've moved my main account to the Lemmy.ca instance for personal reasons, and while I hate moving the community again, this should hopefully be the last time I do so as I don't plan on migrating off the .ca instance for the foreseeable future.

I will be locking this community to mods only, and in due time, I will delete the community alongside my account on this instance so as to allow people to migrate to the new community if they so wish.

On the new instance, I've created another music-related community, and it's really given me ideas as to how to liven up the space. I'll see you all there!

Moving the community to a new instance. (Lemmy.ca)

Hey all.

Sorry for the silence and inactivity with the instance. It's been a busy last few months, and I've recently gotten back to posting on fedi... just not here.

Without delving into the reasons why, I decided to move my main account to Lemmy.ca. I've been working on some communities there, and feel confident in porting over the communities I moderate here over there. I don't plan on moving accounts from Lemmy.ca for quite a while, so the community should have a stable home there.

I'll be locking this community to mods for posting, and then eventually delete it over time to allow people to move on over. Sorry for any inconvenience and for leaving the community inactive for so long.

WATCH THE JUNOS TONIGHT

People always talk about the Grammys, but it's really high time that we as Canadians start treating the Junos as what they were intended to be: an awards ceremony recognizing the best that Canada has to offer in music and NOT a means of advertising Canadian talent to the American market.

Bidets?

This one's an interesting one. I want to cut the amount of toilet paper I use, plus I've heard bidets are more hygienic and effective.

The main issue is that because I rent, I wouldn't be able to install one, so it'd have to be a portable model. Anybody have any idea where I can look?

Canadian toothpaste?

Hey all,

Trying to find a Canadian brand of toothpaste, or at the very least, a brand of toothpaste that isn't American.

Crest, Colgate, Sensodyne, and Arm & Hammer are all American brands from what I can tell. I already found a Canadian brand called Green Beaver, but they're one of those "natural" companies that for some reason thinks putting flouride in toothpaste is bad, and I really don't want to give any money to a company that continues to deny science at this late date.

Thanks in advance!

[QUESTION] Tomato puree?

Hey all,

I have a cookbook here where I found a recipe I want to make and meal plan for, but am a little confused about what to do with a specific ingredient.

The recipe is for a sauerkraut soup, and the recipe calls for a teaspoon of tomato puree. My confusion is that I am completely unfamiliar with tomato puree, and am finding it can be one of two different things, and the struggle is in sorting out which one of these two things is the one I'm looking for. Being in Canada, this isn't a product I recall seeing at all on store shelves.

Apparently in the UK and Australia, tomato puree is similar to tomato paste, though slightly different. However, in the U.S., tomato puree appears to be a product that is thinner than tomato paste, but thicker than tomato sauce.

My confusion is that this cookbook was published by an American authour in the U.S.. The measurements in the book are all imperial, calling for pints and pounds and the likes. However, things don't appear to add up as it doesn't make sense to me that someone would open a larger can like that simply for a teaspoon of ingredient. I'm unsure if things have changed over the years, but if it at all helps, this cookbook was published in 1982.

Thanks in advance!

Is there a cooking community here on Lemmy.ca?

Hi all!

I've been thinking lately of following more Lemmy.ca communities where possible in order to help foster growth and community with Canadian fediverse users. I used to have a lemmy.ca account, but have since swapped to PieFed's software and have been finding it to be a much better match for me and my personal usecase.

I was just curious if there was a cooking community hosted on the Lemmy.ca instance. In going to the site myself and doing a quick search on the communities page, I was unable to find such a community. If there is one, I was hoping to be pointed in the right direction, as I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance, and Elbows up!

How does one fix a warped picture frame?

Hey all,

I recently got some pictures to hang onto the wall of my apartment. While I was able to hang up four of the five so far despite some challenges (needing to get a nut driver to remove portions of the frames and using a command hook for one of the frames rather than strips due to the screws holding the frame together jutting out too much for it to sit flat on the wall with command strips), there's been one picture that I'm in a weird spot with.

Now the picture is clearly not original, it's very obvious that it's a printed reproduction. Regardless, I love the way the art looks, and want to hang it on the wall behind the couch. My issue is that the wooden frame is warped, and I'm a bit lost as to where to go forward with this. The piece I removed from the frame seems to indicate that it was meant to be hung using a nail in the wall, but being in an apartment that would go against my lease. The good news is that I almost certainly can use command strips to attach it to the wall, if only I can figure out how to fix the warping to lay it flat.

Looking online, it might be me using bad search terms, but I can only seem to find out information about what causes this to happen rather than information as to how to fix it. If at all possible I want to avoid reframing the picture since honestly that wouldn't be worth the hassle with how cheap the picture seems to be seeing that it's a reprint.

Thanks in advance!

I'm looking for some software that sends me reminders on my PC, as I find myself often forgetting things or getting too distracted. Any suggestions?

Hey all,

Last year I was diagnosed with ADHD, and while I've been making a habit of keeping medicated, I still find myself at times getting too distracted to keep me from getting important stuff done. The most infuriating thing I'm currently dealing with is my troubles in creating a consistent sleep schedule, where I have a sleep schedule that works set out, but find myself getting too distracted and staying up unreasonably late as a result.

Unfortunately I had to swap to Windows recently, so looking for suggestions that can run on Windows 10. The harder to ignore, the better. Thanks in advance!

Just about all peanut butter in Canada uses peanuts imported from the US. Suggestions for alternatives?

Hey all,

I figured I'd make this post since I was recently looking at the peanut butter section of the store, and every single brand save for Kraft was imported from the US. Kraft, however, likely uses peanuts imported from the US and processes them into peanut butter here in Canada, which allows them to label their peanut butter as a product of Canada.

Peanuts are apparently hardly grown in Canada because of the climate, so importing them from down south makes sense in that regard. However, if you want to find options that source from Canadian farms, Nuts To You Nut Butter makes Sunflower and Pumpkin seed butters that source their seeds from farms in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario exclusively. Just be sure that it says "grown in Canada" on the label since while the sunflower seed butter I bought states that on the label, the pumpkin seed butter I saw didn't have the label like it does on their website, so it might be a recent change they've made. Just gave the sunflower seed butter a try today and it's genuinely incredible.

I was curious as to what brands of nut butters you all know that are made in Canada since peanut butter is such a big part of a lot of people's diets. Would love to see what y'all have to share!

[QUESTION] Ideas for sour cabbage?

Hey all,

I've recently been working on purchasing more stuff made and grown here in Canada, and have been making changes to my diet to account for that. One product that has me curious that I've never had before is "sour cabbage", which can be bought in the produce section and is apparently grown the province over.

While I haven't bought it, I was wondering what some ideas are that I can make with it. Thanks in advance!

Alternatives to brown sugar?

Hi all,

Been wanting to change my shopping habits to include more products that are grown and made within my country. I recently found out that, while the sugar I buy at the store is made within the province, the same does not appear to be the case with the brown sugar available.

Now I understand that I could in theory make my own at home by combining sugar and molasses, but the molasses at the store is all imported from Guatemala. I was wondering mixing the sugar with another syrup of sorts would work in a similar fashion, namely Maple or Blueberry syrup. I'm aware it would alter the flavour, but curious if it would be something that would even be feasible at all.

Thanks in advance!

Just learned Nutty Club is shutting down operations next month. What are some good independent candy companies to support in Canada?

Hey all,

So I recently learned that the Nutty Club brand is going to shut down completely next month and is currently auctioning off all their equipment. While they admittedly didn't seem to be the best in terms of marketing their product and adjusting to the new retail landscape, I still find it sad seeing a Canadian business going defunct, especially one with as much history and nostalgia factor as Nutty Club has.

That being said, what are some good independent candy companies based here in Canada I can support going forward? While I am working overall to dial down my intake of sweets and junk food, I'd love to support something made here when I do decide to treat myself. If it helps for context, I personally live out west in Alberta, but I'd also love to hear of what's available in the rest of Canada. The only other independent, decently inexpensive Canadian candy that comes to mind are Pal-O-Mines, and I'm not even 100% sure if they're made here or just sold in Canada.

Carbon Capture Soap - Helpful and Beneficial Product, or Bandaid Solution?

Hey all,

I've been wanting to change my shopping habits to be more local and environmentally friendly, and in doing so, have been looking at changing up getting a product I get regularly: soap.

I decided to swap from liquid hand soap to bar soap, and am planning on doing the same with bath soap as well once I finish using the liquid soap I have left. However, the bar soap I got unfortunately came with the bars individually wrapped in plastic, which kinda defeats the purpose of why I made the swap to begin with, and since getting it I've also been thinking about what to get that's made closer to home to reduce emissions in transportation.

Now I've been greeted with two options. The first one is a brand made within the province. There's minimal packaging, with the only packaging being a cardboard wrap-around strip for labeling purposes, it's vegan, which is important to me as I want to have a more plant-based lifestyle, and I've used some of their products before years ago and absolutely loved it.

The second option is really interesting, but leaves me with some questions. It's called "carbon capture soap" and is apparently made by connecting a device that captures CO2 from natural gas-fueled heaters and water boilers, which converts the CO2 to pearl ash for use in soap. The packaging is paper, it's also vegan, and it's not just made in the province, but in the city I live in. It's sounds like a viable option, but I have some concerns.

My worry is that, while the idea of reducing carbon emissions like this seems great at first by reducing the emissions of natural-gas appliances, is that it doesn't address the root issue with fossil fuels, and that in using carbon-capture products like this, I'm signifying with my dollar that I'm content in not transitioning from fossil fuels.

Was hoping to maybe get some thoughts, as I'm currently heavily conflicted and unsure about which to go with. Appreciate all help in advance!

FYI - No Name branded pasta gets imported from Turkey. What pasta brands are made in Canada?

Found this absolutely insane. I already am skeptical about the difference in quality of pasta shipped in from Italy, but it's not like Turkey is world-renowned for their pasta like Italy is.

Personally making the swap to purchasing Unico branded pasta since they're made in Canada with Canadian wheat, and I know Italpasta is also made here as well. Figured sharing this information may help people make a swap, but also curious about other brands that make their pasta within our borders rather than ship them in.
