Liquid Trees

@ECEC Good lord the number of replies here from people whose brains have been destroyed by "planners"...

  1. Trees lower the urban heat island effect.
  2. There's plenty of room for trees in dense places, so long as "density" means efficient housing and efficient transportation rather than parking lots and stroads and single-family homes.
  3. Someone said "trees require maintenance", as if asphalt & pretty much everything doesn't require maintenance?
  4. Trees harm cars. But cars harm cars too!

Using refurbished HDDs in my livingroom NAS

@synapse1278 I recently bought a used 8tb drive off ebay for $45. Manufacturing date on the drive was 2016, but Power_On_Hours was 4 (four!). I asked the seller if they reset SMART data; his response:

"We do not reset power on hours, as we could get in a ton of trouble listing used drives as new bulk etc after altering the power on hours. This one likely was used in/for testing an array etc. "

So I'm pretty pleased with that..

@claralistensprechen5th @ECEC *sigh*

City streets are _not_ specifically for cars. Freeways aren't even specifically for cars (buses, trucks), but city streets in particular are definitely not just for cars.

Tree roots are a solved problem. Lots of city master plans and similar documents have a list of trees allowed in the public right-of-way that have root systems compatible with sidewalks and roads. Some trees have roots that buckle concrete, others have roots that don't. Choose wisely.

GitLab Act 2 - A letter to our customers and our investors.

@Bazoogle @1hitsong First of all - when it comes to creating programs, you want the output to be deterministic. Stochastic program output is a serious problem, as you _will_ get unreproducible bugs. Second, plain language is _not_ easy except for the simplest of tasks. Actual programs need to handle all kinds of corner cases and hardware weirdness and human weirdness. Your "plain language" goes from "do a thing" very quickly to "do a thing. but not that thing. or that other thing. and and and.."

Western Digital details 14-platter 3.5-inch HAMR HDD designs with 140 TB and beyond

@Fmstrat @veeesix Since there's two very diffrent questions there.. The first, "where do the failures happen?": anywhere. It could be the controller dying (in which case the platters themselves are fine if you replace the board, but otherwise the whole thing is toast). It could be the head breaking. It could be issues with a specific platter. It could be something that affects _all_ the platters (like dust getting inside the sealed area). So basically, it very much depends.

SMS Forwarding

@Dust0741 Check out jmp.chat (i can provide a referral code if you'd like a free trial). Your number would be ported there, and then SMS would go over XMPP/jabber to any device with a client running. Your phone can stay home, and you'd get SMS messages on your laptop or whatever device you've taken with you.
