Reporting Highlights

  • More Moms Deported: An exclusive data analysis found Trump has deported moms of U.S. citizens at four times the rate of his predecessor.
  • Left Stranded: Because American-born kids can't legally join their parents in immigration detention, some end up with friends or strangers when their parents are detained or deported.
  • New Directive: Trump administration officials revised a document advising how ICE officers should interact with parents, removing the word "humane."

More than a half-dozen GOP senators say there needs to be a probe into the fatal shooting of Pretti, a U.S. citizen, by a Border Patrol agent.

A growing number of Republican senators are calling for an investigation into the killing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis as many Trump administration officials defend federal officers’ actions.

Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Mike Crapo of Idaho, John Curtis of Utah, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Thom Tillis of North Carolina have all said there needs to be a thorough probe into Saturday's fatal shooting of Pretti, a U.S. citizen, by a Border Patrol agent.

Administration officials overseeing immigration enforcement may soon face public scrutiny from Republicans and Democrats alike.

Growing number of Republicans criticize Trump officials' response to Alex Pretti's shooting

A growing number of Republicans are questioning or criticizing the Trump administration's response to the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse who was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on Saturday.

The criticism has extended beyond the handful of Republicans who are known for periodically differing from Trump.

Some Trump allies are also among those questioning immigration agents' tactics or the Department of Homeland Security's handling of the shooting. At minimum, they are calling for an investigation into Pretti's shooting.

Morale is plummeting among ICE agents over long hours, quotas and public hatred: reports

While immigration officers support the Trump administration’s goal of deporting undocumented migrants, many of them have grown ‘disillusioned’ with leadership’s tactics, according to reports

Morale is “plummeting” among federal law enforcement officers tasked with carrying out the Trump administration’s aggressive anti-immigration operation, as they complained that long hours, ambitious arrest quotas and hatred from the public, according to reports.

While officers at Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Patrol, overseen by the Department of Homeland Security, said they supported the administration’s goal of deporting undocumented migrants, many of them have grown “disillusioned” with the tactics being implemented by leadership.

More than 20 current and former immigration officials told The New York Times of their discontent in the hours following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti by a federal agent in Minneapolis.

It was the second deadly shooting of a U.S. citizen carried out by a federal agent in weeks, as officers clashed with protesters following intense public anger over the violence in Minneapolis.

'My US Citizenship Did Not Protect Me': Community Hearing Details ICE Horrors in Minneapolis | Common Dreams

The ICE agents subsequently stopped their vehicle, surrounded the car, discharged pepper spray into it, then smashed the car’s windows and dragged out both O’Keefe and her friend.

O’Keefe said that after being detained by agents, they started taunting her, with one agent telling her, “You guys got to stop obstructing us, that’s why this lesbian removed is dead,” an apparent reference to Minneapolis resident Renee Good, who was killed by an ICE agent last week.

Trump’s Letter to Norway Should Be the Last Straw

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/58902873

Donald Trump now genuinely lives in a different reality, one in which neither grammar nor history nor the normal rules of human interaction now affect him. Also, he really is maniacally, unhealthily obsessive about the Nobel Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government and certainly not the Danish government, determines the winner of that prize. Yet Trump now not only blames Norway for failing to give it to him, but is using it as a justification for an invasion of Greenland.

Think about where this is leading. One possibility, anticipated this morning by financial markets, is a damaging trade war. Another is an American military occupation of Greenland. Try to imagine it: The U.S. Marines arrive in Nuuk, the island’s capital. Perhaps they kill some Danes; perhaps some American soldiers die too. And then what? If the invaders were Russians, they would arrest all of the politicians, put gangsters in charge, shoot people on the street for speaking Danish, change school curricula, and carry out a fake referendum to rubber-stamp the conquest. Is that the American plan too? If not, then what is it? This would not be the occupation of Iraq, which was difficult enough. U.S. troops would need to force Greenlanders, citizens of a treaty ally, to become American against their will.

More Americans support abolishing ICE than ever before, polling data shows

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/41558153

ICE’s approval rating among Americans currently sits at negative 13 points, a recent poll revealed.

More Americans support abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency than at any point since it was established in 2003, new polling shows.

According to data examined by Civiqs, 42% support getting rid of the agency while 50% oppose doing so, a split of just 8 points. This represents a major shift from a year ago, at the start of Donald Trump’s second term, when only 24% of Americans supported abolishing ICE and 59% opposed the idea, a 35-point split.

The 27-point change over the past year comes as Trump uses the agency to terrorize immigrant communities and overrun U.S. cities in the name of his mass deportation campaign, often using tactics that are not only harmful but illegal.

“This is what I voted for?”: Trump supporter loses farm and income to tariffs, only to be mocked online

cross-posted from: https://sh.itjust.works/post/53183024

A small business owner who voted for Donald Trump recently posted a video on TikTok, pleading for help as crushing tariffs on China threatened to bankrupt his operation, which imports alloy wheels. His call for support, however, drew little sympathy from some fellow Americans.

“Votes have consequences,” he was told, with many comments from Twitter/X users relishing the notion that another MAGA voter was suffering because of their political choice. The backlash prompted a second video from the man, in which he dropped several F-bombs while criticizing the apparent heartlessness of those celebrating his hardship.

There’s a direct line between MAGA content creators and the ICE shooting in Minneapolis

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/41372699

Renee Nicole Good’s death at the hands of an immigration officer was preceded by a wave of misinformation peddled by right-wing influencers.

On Wednesday morning in south Minneapolis, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer killed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old American citizen and prize-winning poet, by firing a bullet into the window of her Honda Pilot.

You can, and should, watch the disturbing firsthand video footage of the shooting for yourself, from the multiple angles available.

Otherwise, the same self-professed "citizen journalists" whose often misleading and Trump administration--backed vertical videos about Minnesota helped bring ICE agents to the city (where they went on to tear-gas outraged protesters and harass high school officials) will feel free to rewrite the story of what really happened here.
