TikTok users don't have as much agency over their FYPs as they think

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/49222458

Surprise Surprise ;)

"But some users have voiced concerns that TikTok’s almighty algorithm doesn’t seem to incorporate negative feedback very well. Even when they don’t watch a suggested video or click the “not interested” feature, they keep seeing those videos on their FYP. Northwestern University computer scientists put those suspicions to the test. According to their recent paper, the engagement signals do have an effect, but only temporarily. Then the algorithm gradually relapses unless a user consistently gives the same feedback over and over again."

Has the TikTok Community Agreed on a Replacement Platform if the Ban Happens?

With the looming TikTok ban in the U.S., has the community—creators, users, etc.—settled on a potential platform to migrate to?

The last thing we need is everyone scattering across a dozen apps.

If we want to preserve the vibe, trends, and community connection, it’s critical to have a clear alternative.

So, what’s the consensus (if any) on the best option:

Instagram Reels?

YouTube Shorts?

Clapper?

Lemon8?

Neptune?

Loops by Pixelfed? (Part of the Fediverse)

Noticing TikTok has started putting ad breaks in the middle of videos

This change just happened for me today. I’ve been loving TikTok in the way I have it fine tuned for what I want to see and have always understood the need for ad videos occasionally in between real content. The ads DURING videos are so distracting and completely take me out of whatever I’m learning, watching, etc. Like these videos are a few seconds to a few minutes, do we really need to have them broken up by ads? I hate it. I’ve started just skipping the videos even if I find them interesting as soon as the ad comes on as some pathetic kind of protest that I know won’t help anything. It makes me all the more happy to be participating in something like Lemmy that isn’t just trying to squeeze every drop of revenue from my attention.
