Rog ally x and Asus' warranty issues
y2u.be/b6ymEz1PmBc
Dave said that the Ally (not Ally x) was too cheap, maybe. Maybe Asus didn't include the cost of customer help in it. Hence the warranty issues.
I'm not convinced. Asus is a big firm. If they mistakenly made the Ally too cheap, they could eat the cost of customer help. It's just right to provide 👍 warranty service. And the Ally is their 1st handheld. They wanted to build a 👍 reputation. Also, other Asus items had warranty issues. They must fix their internal process.
Remnant 2 plays pretty nicely!
Settings are everything low, resolution ingame is 720p, the Ally display is set to 1080p. Intel upscaler performance mode. There are some graphics settings that can go higher but I didn't bother to experiment too much and everything on low still looks awesome. Great game for the Ally!
Taki Udon video about the ROG Ally highlights the positives
The ROG Ally has been received pretty well, but many reviews focus on the caveats or comparisons to SteamDeck, whereas this is a nice step back and celebration of what the ROG Ally does well.
My Gaming Laptop Replacement
My old gaming laptop, a Sager NP9752 with a GTX 980m, was a beast when I bought it, but it's started to feel its age. Though it's still very usable, I decided it was time for something new. I'm obsessed with small powerhouses, so when I found out about the Ally I was intrigued. For a while, I was indecisive going between the Steam Deck and the Ally. What cinched the deal was the XG Mobile dock. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any in stock, Amazon has it way over priced, and the 4090 version would take it way out of the price I'm willing to pay for such a thing. Luck would have it, I found one Best Buy that had a used 6850 version that was $100 dollars cheaper than MSRP. I've been using this setup for a couple of weeks now, and color me impressed. This thing works very well as a laptop replacement. The little annoyances are outweighed by the portability. And I do take it out with me way more than I did the laptop.
That's all. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
ROG Ally Capture card (variable refresh rate support)
I'm looking at capture cards with VRR support. Currently I found the following:
-
Elgato HD60 XE
-
Elgato Game Capture HD60 X ^ not sure if it supports a high refresh rate gameplay, two articles contradict each other on this
-
EVGA XR1 Lite
-
EVGA XR1 Pro
-
AVerMediaLive Gamer Extreme 3 ^ probably doesn't pass through higher framerates
Which one from the above could work best with ROG Ally? In terms of features and also connectivity.
You can also provide other examples. I care about VRR and higher FPS pass through (just for my gameplay, recording at 60 FPS is of course enough)
Dealing with USB-C connection may be an issue - Ally has only one USB-C, used for power and everything else. Hubs nearly always have only one male usb-c (connecting to your device) one usb-c for power, and nothing else. I haven't found any hub which would let me connect ROG Ally with power supply, and an additional USB-C device.
Frame limiter
I struggled with the frame limiter since day one, couldn't get it working. Yesterday I found out that 1: you have to set the FPS limit before opening an app 2: some games will still ignore it. Hope this helps someone, I'm happy with 45 mostly and it saves battery + heat. :)
