NSFW should be completely hidden by default in Pixelfed

I've just created an account and in no more than two minutes a huge vagina appeared on my screen. This is problem.

Not that I have something against vaginas on my screen, but usually it takes some effort and commitment to make them available for observation. This time it was...

Well, ok, I did switch to Global feed, and there was a sensitive content warning, and I did click "See post", but still it was too fast. It was a huge blurred square on my screen, obviously I had to unveil this mystery.

Now I can't recommend Pixelfed to anyone in real life, because these pictures are just a few clicks away.

How I think it should be: when you create an account, "Hide NSFW content" option is enabled by default and such posts do not appear in your feeds or search results. If you wish, you can go to settings and enable it. "Blur NSFW content" is another checkbox enabled by default.

Right now there are no such settings at all. All I've found - is a quest of just six simple steps of creating a new filter. A quest should be needed to enable these images, not to disable them.

Pixelfed.art Not Responding

I've been on pixelfed.social for a couple years now but, as you'll see if you follow the link, I use it primarily for art.

While .social has been fine, I recently realized there is a pixelfed.art instance & I would love to be part of a community that is focused on art rather than general photos.

My understanding of Federation is that I should be able to migrate my .social account over to .art, so I submitted a request with a link to my .social & verified my email. Two weeks later I have not heard back. Not even a rejection email.

So I don't know if they just don't like me, or don't like my art, or I did something wrong, or I'm just not cool enough to hang with the In crowd, i have no idea!

I think I'm just out of luck, right? Maybe I need to wait another month?

I'm used to ghosting from Dating app matches, but this feels bad, ngl.

Pixelfed needs Big Names

The problem with leaving IG behind is all my friends are on there. None of them are on Pixelfed.
Famous people with hundreds of thousands followers could change this. They have the critical mass. Their followers will automatically follow. Does anybody have direct access to such people? Who can then spread the word in those circles...🫤
EDIT : I meant celebrities, not influencers.

Pixelfed Android App

When I add images to my post, they sometimes don't appear in the mobile app on Android. I only see them when I edit the post. It probably has something to do with the size of the image. If I load smaller versions into a post, they are easily loaded. My tests included images in JPG format with a resolution of 6542x4365. File size at about 15MB. I assumed that the images would be automatically reduced before uploading and that EXIF data would be automatically removed. Obviously, this is not so. I was able to download the images in the browser. All Exif data was included, the file was also identical in size.

Is there a setting somewhere that can be automatically adjusted before uploading?

What I also noticed is that there is no way in Android to display the alt text of an image or to enlarge it full screen. Surely the latter is a mistake? Is it?

What sort of things can I do to make the landing page more interesting for new registers?

I am still getting a new pixelfed instance up and I don't see anything like a feed relay like what mastodon has to pull in things on the server.

This is what I see when I log in as a new user (edit: since this screenshot I fixed the default avatars):

Right now it looks like pixelfed.social has an allow-list for who they allow to search and federate with, so I can't pull or search anything from there, but I was able to pull in the Europe user, which is why it's seen here.

I'd like to get things looking pretty interesting on the front page before I announce the service.
Does anyone have any tips or best steps?

I was thinking of whether to have a separate account that follows hashtags and then auto-sub new users to that account, or am I confusing with mastodon?

Thank you for the help and suggestions!

Pixelfed maximum quality defaults

TL; DR; PNG resized to 1080 pixels on the short edge.

Just recently started dabbling with Pixelfed, but I couldn't find the best upload settings anywhere in the documentation, bar the 15MB upload limit. The server documentation states a quality percentage to use and boolean switches whether to resize and/or optimize images using aforementioned quality.

Turns out: images are by default resized to fit 1080 pixels on the short edge and are re-encoded using https://image.intervention.io/v2/api/encode set to the server's chosen quality percentage (which usually isn't advertised for instances but is 80 by default). Luckily, PNG is accepted nearly everywhere and its compression is lossless.

Those PNGs are way bigger than actual full resolution WebP's with a quality over 80% for my 24MP RAW exports. Most resized and optimized images tend to be smaller than 1MB, though, whereas the allowed PNG's are just shy of 3MB.

A full-res 24MP test image on 85% quality WebP dives well under that 3MB. Restricting to something more modern say 4K monitor resolution at 85% WebP would be well within current optimized file size ranges of about 1MB from my experiments with Darktable exports.

How do you tag users in a post who are from different instances?

When creating a post, how do you tag users who are on different instances? For example, I'm creating a post on pixelfed.ca and I want to tag someone on pxlfd.ca. The tagging menu seems to only show users in the local instance. In the comments section, I have no problems mentioning users in other instances.

===Update - Apr 29, 2025===

I found a comment from dansup in issue 5885 on the Pixelfed GitHub. The inability to tag users on other instances is by design.
