Saint Catherine of Alexandria was a brilliant young scholar in Egypt who famously combined high intellect with deep faith. After a mystical vision where Christ claimed her as His bride, she publicly challenged Emperor Maxentius regarding his idol worship. The Emperor summoned 50 of the world’s greatest philosophers to defeat her in debate, but Catherine used logic and philosophy to convert every single one of them to Christianity. Although the Emperor eventually martyred her first attempting to use a spiked wheel (which an angel shattered) and then beheading her; her legacy proves that faith and reason are not enemies. She teaches us that a sanctified mind should rule over the body's passions, allowing us to use our intellect to serve God rather than being slaves to the world.
