CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. — A community is mourning the death of Shawn Hoveland, the owner of Beartown Bistro & Pizza Company in James City.

In the small city of New Bern, N.C., where lanterns illuminate regal, red-bricked streets, residents are used to the drudgery of storm prep, picking up sandbags and battery packs at Mitchell Hardware, feeling gloomy about another round of severe weather along the state’s hurricane-weary coastline.

But this week, Karen Pike, an employee at the store, noticed that residents in the city of about 31,000 were preparing for a storm with a pep in their step. Snow, perhaps a lot of it, was heading toward the beaches of the Carolinas, and customers needed their sleds. Perhaps a shovel, too.

TL;DR: Inshore commercial shrimp trawling is devastating our marine fisheries by causing by-catch (untargeted marine animals trapped and killed in the nets) at a rate of 4 to 1 by weight.

North Carolina is the only state that still allows inshore shrimp trawling.

Here’s what the North Carolina Wildlife Federation has to say on the topic. It bugs me that they’re framing it as the loss of recreational flounder fishing being the primary consequence, but I suppose whatever brings more attention to the issue is a good thing.
