The origin and "core" of the Mythos start of course with the collection 23 of Lovecraft’s greatest weird tales. In these stories, monstrous entities traverse the gulfs of time and space and humankind cowers in fright at the havoc they wreak.

Cosmic Horror Through the Eyes of a Penguin: Lovecraftian Game 'Penguin Colony'

The game is set in Antarctica in 1939. Two human factions—the Nazis and a guardian group known as the Kaitiaki—are heading deep into the Antarctic, each with their own agenda. The Nazis seek to harness the power of an ancient, unimaginable entity for destructive purposes, while the Kaitiaki aim to put that power back to sleep, as they have been tasked to do for generations. The player takes on the role of a local penguin drawn to strange sights and sounds, witnessing the human characters as they encounter ancient ruins and slowly descend into madness.

“H. P. Lovecraft’s The Ter’ble Old Man” (1971) comics adaptation by Larry Fuller

We will probably never know who was the first Black creator to adapt Lovecraft to the medium of comics. Pre-Code Lovecraftian Horror Comics rarely credited their writers and artists; it is not impossible that one or more uncredited toiler in a small horror comic shop was Black. So too, there may be some obscure comic that hasn’t come to light yet where an early artist or writer applied their talents to a Lovecraft adaptation that has so far escaped notice. Such things happen, and when they come to light push back “first” a little further.

That being said, the first Lovecraft comic adaptation by a Black creator that I’m aware of is “H. P. Lovecraft’s The Ter’ble Old Man” in the underground comix Laugh in the Dark (1971, Last Gasp), by Larry Fuller.

The Rig Is The Perfect Modern Lovecraftian TV Show

The Rig, a British series set on a remote oil rig in the North Sea that becomes cut off from the mainland by a mysterious fog. Across its two seasons, The Rig steadily evolves from a tense survival mystery into something much stranger.

Although The Rig doesn’t directly adapt either writer’s work, it captures the essence of what made both H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King legends of modern fiction. The result is a chilling supernatural thriller that weaponizes its lonely offshore setting and the ancient force hidden beneath the ocean floor, creating a show that feels like the perfect meeting point between the two titans of horror.

[audio] Trailer for the new Lovecraft Investigations kickstarter

cross-posted from: https://sopuli.xyz/post/45150123

This is part of their crowdfund campaign for the new season of their full cast audio drama, trying to get new listeners. First 3 seasons were produced by the BBC, and they’re universally great. But they’re off on their own this time. The sound design across the seasons has been fantastic, the writing great, and the performances stellar.

Big Bad Wolf Talks Lovecraft And More as Inspiration for ‘Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss’ [Interview]

“It is a universe that lends itself to interactivity. You have detectives, a dark and horrific world, creatures, and ancestral cults devoted to ancient entities. It is a rich and expansive lore.”

So enthuses Tommaso Nuti, Game Director at Big Bad Wolf and creative mind behind the recently-released Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, when asked why H.P. Lovecraft’s singular imaginings seem to be so much more popular in the gaming world than they are in other art forms. Indeed, while there’s a relative dearth of cosmic horror outings nowadays in cinema or on television, it sometimes feels like you can barely move for them on the Steam store. (...)
