(Added Short Summary) [Plants added to ctrl invasive Black Crazy Ants(Dark Horde)] I Added Carnivorous Pitcher Plants into My Giant Rainforest Vivarium [32:21 | Feb 05 2024 | AntsCanada]

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/11649542

Short Summary

  1. Introduction of a rainforest vivarium called Pandora, designed to study a wild ecosystem.
  2. Introduction of carnivorous pitcher plants to control an invasive black crazy ant supercolony causing problems in Pandora.
  3. Discovery that the pitcher plants are attracting and successfully catching ants with nectar.
  4. Observation of black crazy ants invading the territory of a previously introduced giant trap-jaw ant queen.
  5. Ants release an alarm pheromone to call for reinforcements against a jumping spider, ending with the spider escaping.
  6. Narrator observes ants attracted to pitcher plants, some managing to escape after falling in.
  7. Speculation that nectar may have intoxicating effects on ants, with plans to check the effectiveness of the pitcher plants later.
  8. Growth and development of baby guppies in the pond, with a suggestion to add predators if the population becomes too large.
  9. Observation of various insects and animals at night, including a praying mantis and tree frogs.
  10. Introduction of carpenter ants to make the rainforest more hostile for the Dark Horde, ending with a call for viewers to support the channel.

The polar vortex forced my hand again

It got too cold in my Chicago-area garage for these guys, so I had to bring them in early. I planned on waking them up Valentine's Day week, just to get an early start on the growing season. But here we are.

The sundews had been in the tent all winter, but the flytraps and sarracenia were enjoying a nice garage nap.

Let's see how we're looking in a few weeks.

Oh, and I'm going to ditch this setup in a few weeks. I am ordering shelves and 4-foot Barrina lights. As many lights as I have read about and all the studying I've done, for whatever reason plants just grow unusually well under Barrina lights. My succulents have taken off, and I'm assuming my carnivorous plants will as well.

aphids!

I have aphids on my sundew. They started on my Venus fly trap and migrated. I think by some miracle I got rid of them on the Venus fly trap by using alcohol and a qtip. However the sundew seems infested.

I have a bottle of neem oil coming send I was hoping to get both application advice and folks' experience with it.

Other ideas welcome. Thank you in advance.

I guess this trap caught a bug that was a little too big again.

I guess this trap caught a bug that was a little too big again.

It's the second time that an ulcer has formed on one of this plant's traps after it caught a bug that was a little on the big side. I saw a TikTok video explaining that sometimes the trap will survive and it will just have a hole in the side, but I'm not holding out any hope for that. The last one just died. Fortunately, the rest of the plant seems healthy.

Want to be a mod?

Hi All,

I mostly grabbed this as a place-holder because this is a community I'll miss from reddit. I'll post some of my bog gardens after I can give them a proper hair cut.

If anyone wants to take on any mod responsibilities now or in the future just reach out. I imagine it'll be a while before there's anything really involved though.

Glad to see there's already some posts :)
