The UK gov is going through a process of introducing beavers to various regions for this reason. Some environmentalists will not wait for the bureacracy to play out and have started releasing beavers without a controlled process, which is apparently illegal.

Plan to reintroduce beavers to Erewash

A council in Derbyshire is pursuing plans to reintroduce beavers in a bid to boost biodiversity.

Erewash Borough Council's draft biodiversity strategy could see the Eurasian beaver find a new home in the Erewash Valley.

The move follows work by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to breed a beaver population at Willington Wetlands nature reserve in 2021, which brought the species back to the county for the first time in 800 years.

‘No one knows where it came from’: first wild beaver spotted in Norfolk for 400 years

A wild beaver has been spotted in Norfolk for the first time since beavers were hunted to extinction in England at the beginning of the 16th century.

It was filmed dragging logs and establishing a lodge in a “perfect beaver habitat” on the River Wensum at Pensthorpe, a nature reserve near Fakenham in Norfolk.

It is the first time a free-living beaver has been recorded in the county since the species began to re-establish itself in the English countryside in 2015, when a litter of wild kits was born in Devon.

Beavers make better wetlands for butterflies than human-made ponds

Wetlands created by beavers have 45% more butterflies than those created by people, a Butterfly Conservation ecologist has revealed.

The study also showed that beaver wetlands have 29% more hoverfly species and 119% more hoverfly individuals.

Both groups of insects pollinate a range of plants, highlighting a potentially unforeseen benefit of beaver reintroduction.
