[Meta] Negativity in Comments

Recently, we merry mods have been noticing many-a-comments being in the report queue for perceived negativity (the aim of the community being to provide "a break from the incessant negativity and rage"). What actions should we do about these, if any? Do we need a newsome another-rule for this?

Here's what I think: Some skepticism and scrutiny is always quite needed knowledge—especially against information that's actually untrue/misleading—and any bars I can think of for removing negative comments would apply to reasonable skepticism as well. Thus, the mod team is asking y'all to drop some bars!

Edit

::: spoiler Assorted examples of reported comments

Actually, you’ve missed the mark. It’s not whining about an advancement, it’s legitimate criticism of the US health industry. He’s just saying what we all know to be true which is that regardless of technological improvements, lifesaving care will continue to be ruinously expensive for those that are able to access it and gatekept from many others.

If you have a problem with comments like these undermining celebration of scientific progress, then maybe you should think about the structural political issues that lead people to disillusionment and cynicism rather than labeling people as conspiracy theorists.

You know “big red“ voted for Trump. It’s a cute story, but I hope he gets what he voted for In the end

It’s too bad that curing patients is not a sustainable business model. Even if this did work we would only ever see it developed if you had to take it twice a month for the rest of your life in order to survive.

Edit: sorry, I just noticed this is in Uplifting News. So, let’s be optimistic. Maybe global capitalism will collapse and governments will start trying to take care of people.

Nobody said anything about ICE, we’re talking about the military known for bombing weddings in multiple middle eastern countries and then bombing ambulances when they respond.

If you have the money to commit atrocities in a dozen countries at once, you have money to spare.

That’s .world for you; complaining about Reddit while trying to recreate it exactly

It’s very sad to see hype like this. They only had 30 enrolled, this was just a safety study, and while the data looks promising, there is certainly not enough statistical power, which is why there is no approval yet.

Shame on the BBC. If you are going to quote invesigators, you should state that they have paid consultancy deals with UniQure. The same two people were equally excited about a Roche therapy years ago…

But UniCure stock went up 200% today, which is the point.

[Meta] Enumerated list of rules

Since it's slightly less than easy to glean the rules from the sidebar, here's an itemized collection of rules. For example, the schadenfreude rule can be referred to as a)1.

a) Posts must be uplifting.

  1. This excludes schadenfreude.^[1]^
Try ![email protected] instead if the subject involves powerful people.

b) Posts must not overtly deal with toxic politics.^[1]^

c) Links must not be low-effort.^[1]^

  1. Links must not go to a copy of a copy of a copy.
(Try finding the original source instead! Links do not have to be textual, so there's no need to find a content farm to post a video.)
  2. Posts must not be fake news.

d) Comments should foster open discussion.

  1. Negativity/spreading doom and gloom in comments is currently allowed.^[2]^
  2. Comments be civil and must not include personal attacks towards other commenters or non-public figures. (Swearing is allowed as long as it isn't directed towards those.) Please engage with others' points respectfully and fully.
The rest of the lemmy.world instance rules apply here as well.

Last night, New York City candidates who embraced the livable streets movement defeated those who did not 🎉🥳

GREAT NEWS!!!

In Queens

🍍 Assembly Member Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, who was endorsed by StreetsPAC, defeated incumbent Senator Jessica Ramos, who was very much not.

🍍 Pesach Osina, who was endorsed by StreetsPAC for his support for the QueensLink and for better bus service, won the primary for the open Assembly seat in Howard Beach and the Rockaways.

🍍 Patrick Martinez, whom StreetsPAC chose partly because he’s never owned a car (!), won the primary to succeed state Senator Steven Raga in Elmhurst

🍍 Brian Romero, another StreetsPAC endorsee, won the race to succeed Gonzalez-Rojas in the Assembly.

🍍 Assembly Member Diana Moreno, who was endorsed by StreetsPAC for “leading on issues of traffic safety” as well as being a cyclist, won re-election.

🍍 Samantha Kattan, a tenant organizer, Democratic Socialist and StreetsPAC endorsee, won the primary for the open 37th Assembly seat covering Ridgewood, Sunnyside and Maspeth.

🍍 David Orkin, endorsed by StreetsPAC over incumbent Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar, a frequent livable streets and e-bike foe, resoundingly won the primary for the Woodhaven seat.

🍍 Incumbent Assembly Member Catalina Cruz, also endorsed by StreetsPAC, won the primary to retain her Corona seat.

In Brooklyn:

🍓 Assembly Member Brian Cunningham, endorsed by StreetsPAC for his work on camera-based enforcement, won the primary to retain his seat in Crown Heights.

🍓 Assembly Member Emily Gallagher, one of StreetsPAC’s strongest endorsees, easily won her primary in Greenpoint.

🍓 Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon, also endorsed by StreetsPAC, won in Carroll Gardens.

🍓 Senator Jabari Brisport, whom StreetsPAC called “a reliable supporter of safer streets and better public transit,” easily won the primary to retain his Bedford-Stuyvesant seat.

🍓 Christian Tate, endorsed by StreetsPAC, defeated longtime incumbent Assembly Member Erik Dilan, who has been virtually nonexistent on livable streets issues in the Bushwick and East New York district. Tate led the effort to get that local community board to oppose the NYPD’s criminal crackdown on cyclists

🍓 Eon Huntley, a StreetsPAC endorsee, defeated incumbent Assembly Member Stefani Zinerman in Bedford-Stuyvesant’s 56th district. Huntley supports universal daylighting and wants the state Department of Motor Vehicles to be more proactive in addressing unsafe driving.

In Manhattan:

🍇 Illapa Sairitupac, StreetsPAC endorsee, won the primary for the open Assembly seat in Chinatown

🍇 Eli Northrup, who ran with StreetsPAC’s nod to succeed Lasher for a West Side Assembly seat, won the primary. StreetsPAC had praised his opposition to licensing and registering legal e-bikes and his advocacy for better street design.

The Sixties Scoop separated her from her culture. Love brought it back to her

Others in Buffalo Narrows call them an inspiration.

"They're definitely mentors in the community," said Candice Waite, whose kids and their friends recently joined Mervin and Darlene to learn about filleting and smoking fish.

"When we pulled up there, they were eagerly waiting in their garage, literally fillet knives and hands with just an open heart," she said. They refused any payment, saying they just wanted to teach others, she recalled.

"I aspire to be Mervin and Darlene when I'm their age."

The joy the couple finds in sharing their traditions is plain in their smiles as they haul up a net full of fish in just half an hour. It's a gift Darlene doesn't take for granted, having been taken from her home as a child and having had to relearn her culture.

And for his part, Mervin doesn't take her presence in his life for granted.

"She's my best friend," he says.

"I just couldn't imagine living life with somebody else."

Copper drug clears toxic Alzheimer’s proteins and restores memory

"This is the first study to show that [the compound] Cu(ATSM) can increase the abundance of P-gp clearance pumps in an Alzheimer's model, by 24.1 percent, effectively linking the repair of the blood-brain barrier to a reduction in toxic proteins and improved cognitive function," Dr. Pyun said.

"By improving the pumps, the brain can finally clear out the trapped waste. Over 56 days, the treatment reduced toxic amyloid-beta by 42 percent and improved spatial learning by nearly 44 percent."

"Cu(ATSM) is a copper compound with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties that has already progressed to clinical testing for conditions like Parkinson's and ALS," Professor Nicolazzo said.

"The application was ever so simple: a bag of woodchips impregnated with turkey tail spores left at the bottom of the river. The mycelia, or filament system of the mushroom, filtered out 80% of the E. coli, 83% of the phosphorous, and 35% of the nitrogen."
