Inducted a guy at work employed by our labour hire company, who admitted that he has no fixed address and slept in his car out the front of work last night.

He's framing it that he's doing van life but I could see that there's likely more to it.

I've put him on to a community pantry and I'm bringing him some bedding, basic toiletries, and a towel tomorrow. He said no initially but agreed when I told him it was things my husband wanted me to throw out anyway.

Really threw me with how open he was with it all. Left me really checking my privilege too.

in this economy there's no shame in it. A person could be in a two wage family and they still can't find a place because there is a housing shortage. It's like musical chairs.

and hugs for being so caring 🤗

14
aussie.zone

Definitely no shame in it. These days more so than ever.

He's got a really good attitude about it all. Well kept, in good spirits, and generally seems to have his head screwed on right.

Really impressed that the labour hire agency gave him a chance instead of putting him in the too hard basket.

That’s such a nice thing you did for him.

Being in a not such a nice spot myself I appreciate that others are still helping people with things out of the goodness of their own heart.

I still feel shit that I can't do more. Better than nothing but yeah.

We grew up at risk of homelessness and my early adult life was on the edge.

Growing up, if it wasn't for generous hand-me-downs, public housing, and Centrelink, my life would have ended up on a completely different course.

Today is a really hard day.

Today we finally had to move my nana into respite care. She’s not taking it well. Neither are we

Today Mr Omoikiri is having his wisdom teeth out. And while it’s completely routine and there no danger in it, I’m sick with worry and waiting around to get the call that he’s fine and I can go and pick him up.

Today I have to review this 80,000 word thesis and get to back to my supervisors.

I am so mentally and emotionally drained and my day isn’t even half done.

19

Oh, that’s a lot all at once. Best of luck for Mr Omoikiri and your thesis review, and that your nana becomes more settled in respite. It’s so hard for people in that situation to understand that it can actually be a good thing for both them & their carers. Have been through that with my dad & understand what you’re going through. hugs

Big news!

My boy Rocky has been doing so well at school, we've been promoted from Advanced Beginner to Intermediate! We'll be focusing more intensely on our heel work and extended stays now

So proud of my little munchkin!

Day 9 of 30 day exercise plan. It's working! I looked in the mirror this morning and noticed subtle changes in my body which are really encouraging and positive. I'm so happy! I can't wait to tell my manager at work. She partly prompted me to start thinking about it in the first place. She had to do a test where you run on a treadmill for 10mins while they monitor your heart (pressure test). While I'm physically strong (lifting and carrying 20kg sacks of potatoes will do that to ya) I thought, "Could I run on a treadmill for 10mins? I'm strong but I'm not cardio fit at all." Then I started thinking, "I'll be 50 this year, you gotta do something about it. Do something for yourself. You're overweight, just like your parents were, and they did nothing about it and died!" Sorry for the morning dramatics, but I didn't want to end up like that.

Here's to positive changes! 💪

16

Well done! I've started doing more exercise as well. Tummy has already responded. Thank you planks and push ups and leg raises. That a load of squats and a decent walk moving to long walks again should see me ok. My gait has changed, my centre of gravity as well so my balance is less intuitive than it was and yesterday showed me I'm not flexible enough. Decent journey ahead, but I'm still not in bad shape luckily.

5

good on you! for me the mood enhancing effects of exercise are absolutely worth it aside from any other benefits.

4

Congrats on making positive change, the start is always the hardest but its so worth it :)

I can't see any reason why the bot did not post last night. There was no error, it just didn't do it. The only thing I can think of is that midnight is causing a problem, I will change the time to a couple of minutes after midnight and see if that works. Every test post I have done has worked as scheduled with no problems. Fingers crossed for third time lucky I guess.

15
aussie.zone

The new wifi dongle arrived this morning, hopefully being able to connect directly instead of piggybacking off the phone will give it more confidence to stay out late and mingle.

4

You sure thats what you want? Next thing you know bots gonna bring another bot home for some fun, and you have to listen to awkward teenaged bot sex through the wall.

3

Maybe get it to be a Lunchtime Bot for a couple of days as a warmup. Have it pop in at midday to say hello, then it can get to know people & find out we’re not too scary

Or maybe it still thinks it’s in Indonesia

3

No, that was stopped prior to the upgrade to 0.18, as it would have been contributing to federation issues.

3
aussie.zone

I've been seeing occasional odd behaviour on the server that seems to be database maintenance related. It happens sporadically throughout the day, with no pattern that I can see. When it happens, I've noticed a few brief periods of errors browsing the site. Its possible your bot has been unlucky and attempted to post during one of these times.

I'm hoping lemmy 0.18.1 will resolve this, I know there has been a lot of effort put into optimising database queries etc. If it doesn't, I'll dig into it further and raise a github issue with the lemmy devs.

3
aussie.zone

For some reason it didn't even try to post, so it definitely wasn't an error from the server. It has been triggered to make the post at the right time for every single test post I have done, which is why I think there might be something specific about midnight that is causing some issues.

2

Oh ok no worries. FWIW I just witnessed the server side issue in the last 5 minutes. Received error pages etc.

3

No, it has the timezone in its programming and all the tests have triggered at the right time.

1
aussie.zone

Damn Bot. It was awake all night. No crashes, no timeouts. It just didn't post anything. I'll have to sit down for a debrief and try to figure out what went wrong. After coffee.

15

Well, with how it is going so far it would be easier to just set an alarm at midnight to do it myself 🤣

Once I get it working it will be nice though, especially if I can get the pinning working at some point. That might take a while though. I'm also hoping one day to have the bot make a comment in the previous thread when the new one is posted, but given the current rate of progress that will probably be sometime in 2027.

5

My weekend was actually productive but my energy has been sapped. Seriously no idea why or how. I'm well rested so should have plenty!

3

My psych always talks about "what do you need". And I've gotta be honest, today I've got no idea. I feel a bit flat. Might try and do some small jobs around the house and see if that gets me feeling a bit more accomplished.

14

I spent way too much time today perfecting my pay calculation spreadsheet. But is now a little neater, includes more automation, and calculates the super I should be getting as well as the pay.

We have a ridiculously complicated pay structure, so I have 7 types of leave, 6 types of overtime payment, 6 different penalty levels (there are more, that's just the ones that apply to me) and a few allowances. We also get paid basic wages for the period finishing on Friday, but penalties and overtime are for the period finishing on Wednesday. And our standard work day is broken into normal hours, rostered overtime and leave acruual, so the hours used to calculate each type of pay are different. So it is really hard to figure out whether we are being paid correctly without a computer and complicated maths.

I've managed to get to the point that except for mistakes my calculations only differ due to minor rounding differences, and I can project future income for my budget fairly easily too. NGL pretty pleased with myself.

14
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

Well done. It must have been a lot of work to get that worked out.

I’ve been doing a very rudimentary budget every week or two to make sure I’m on top of everything and it’s so complicated without everything you mentioned and takes a lot of time!

Not that you’ve done that is it time to R&R?

6

I've been working on it for a couple of years and improving a bit at a time. Now that I'm in the habit of recording things like the utility bills and petrol it's becoming a lot more accurate, and I can make better forecasts for the future. It's also been very educational, and there are a lot of similarities between complicated excel formulas and the way the code for the bot is written, so it has probably helped with that too!

1
aussie.zone

Thanks @Thornburywitch! The bot was not the only thing malfunctioning, just after setting everything up nicely and getting ready for bed, I nearly bricked my rather expensive work device the night before a field visit.

Thanks to a stray comment on an old post online, I finally managed to revive it over an hour later, even though it honestly felt like some dark magic and only worked after about 9 tries (and some stress relieving cleaning). Certainly some witchy intervention there as well, I suspect.

14

Still having sporadic internet problems, and went to look in comms box to see what I could find. Comms box is in laundry next to fridge. I opened freezer door and looked in there. This sums up my day so far, and is probably the reason I won't be getting a job in IT anytime soon.

don't beat yourself up, His Lordship is literally one of the biggest SEO experts in the country but if the internet shits out he runs into my office and dances madly in place crying and pointing to the Chrome Dinosaur.

8
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

You got the fun diag time now. With the internet issues, is there a pattern? Does it stop browsing then come good without intervention, or is it just s l o w? Is it the entire network or just one machine? Wired or wireless?

2
aussie.zone

No pattern, and D: all of the above, which is the most frustrating part. My clever bro hardwired the house several years ago so there are network ports in each room, plus wifi, but it’s all working/not working randomly across all devices (a couple of wired desktops and other machines over wifi, and the tv).

A smart switch was installed recently to reboot the system each night, which I suspect might be the issue (although the expert disagrees). I may have also tweaked the patching, but don’t think that broke it because I’m good at patching and problem existed before & after that.

Smart switch has been removed and things have improved somewhat but not entirely. Sigh.

I’ve also reached the stage where listening to IT people speak is like listening to another language that I am not fluent in, lol

packets… ping… something something…

2
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

ok, so the packets and the ping is them trying to work out if it's your modem shitting out, or the physical lines on your network breaking somewhere. So if I wanted to see what's going on I'd set the PC in His Lordship's office and the one in the loungeroom to both ping the modem. One drops out but the other one's still talking, i know that's one specific route. Both crap out, the modem's stopped talking 'cos that's the only wiring place they have in common.

Pings are basically just tiny little "HELLOOOO" messages sent between equipment that request a hello back to check the line is working. The "packets" message you get back is the response (and there's more data in that simple response, but that's a bigger thing that needs technical divining, packet sizes and shizzle tell you if a line is degrading)

2

Ah, thanks for the info - very interesting!

I resisted the urge to make druggie jokes (got any ‘pingers’ haha!’), even though I’m SURE they’ve never heard that before and would find it absolutely hilarious

2

Oh that one would barely register since CardiB fucked up Wireless Access Points.

Miss Meow just walked over the laptop and tried to update the bot. Apparently she wants everyone to see the number 87.

I have set the bot up to run at 5 minutes past midnight, fingers crossed this one actually works, I'm running out of options to try if it fails again. I've turned off all power management options in the wifi adaptors, and it now has the new adaptor so can connect directly to the router instead of via the phone as a hotspot. This whole thing is like launching a rocket, all the tests can go well and the main launch can still fail! Come on @[email protected] we believe in you!

13

I sense a conspiracy at work here.

Maybe she sabotaged the bot the last few times when you weren’t looking.

I pastuerized some mead last night for the first time to kill off the yeast so that i could add things for secondary flavour/aging without trigging further fermentation. The base mead is strawberry/raspberry and it is split into two 5L vessels. In one i have added some wine tannin and 0.5L of strawberry juice from berries we picked recently and in the other i have added 0.5kg of dried sour cherries. They both look amazing colour wise now and they smelt great. Will give them a taste later today before they go away for storage. The cherry one is so dark at the moment you cant even see a torch light through the liquid

11
aussie.zone

This sounds awesome. Were you somehow able to pasteurise them in place (i.e. in the fermentation vessels) or did this involve transferring them to carboys or similiar for secondary?

4

I transferred to two 5L glass carboys so that i could leave the lees behind and then i sat them in an esky of water with a portable sous vide machine attached to the side :)

I plan to continue watching law and order suv (season 22) and I bought some candy, those scoop ones at Flinders Station so that will be my treat after dinner. Half way home now yay. Might rest for a bit once I get home and then shower before dinner

2
aussie.zone

Nice plan. Definitely a day for a nice hot shower to unwind. Think I might do that myself, I'm just about to finish up with this stuff.

Argh! Boyo has locked himself out again. Keys, phone, wallet, lunch, it’s always something. Absolutely certain it’s diagnosable!

So refrigerated phone or rotting lunch.

oooo auspost wanna play funny buggers? I've got an ASD fixation and a tendency towards cuntishness. I guarantee those fuckers I'm a lot better at funny buggers than they are

(cunce decided to not only not even attempt a driveby for delivery, or even use a local LPO literally across the road, or even the parcel centre two blocks up but drop a small, letter-box stuffable parcel of cat fountain filters in a parcel locker in the next fucking suburb)

When I was growing up my parents always said "there's no such thing as a stupid question" or "you don't learn if you don't ask questions". So now I feel bad when I see questions being posted on reddit and I think "that's a stupid question. Im not even going to reply to that". Like I get that some people were given the unfortunate parents stick and weren't taught stuff but we have internet now guys. We can research. We can ask questions before we ask strangers.

7
aussie.zone

Oooooh I hear you on this. Like hello there’s google. Try searching yourself and if you’re still confused, maybe ask in a DT instead of a whole melbourne post 😒

6
aussie.zone

The stupidity tends not to be so much the actual question as it is the inability to take appropriate actions to find the answer. If you want to know something taking some steps to do at least basic research yourself is appropriate, then if you need to know more you are in a position to ask reasonable questions. A lot of people prefer to just ask someone else and expect them to put all the effort in, and there is rarely any point in actually answering them because if the answer is not simple and easy they just lose interest anyway.

Sometimes the stupidity is people not recognising questions there is no known answer to. I saw a lot of them at the start of Covid, people were asking things like exact details of how long the virus could live on surfaces or how far it could travel in air. Which is pretty stupid when you are talking about a virus that had only just been discovered. I suspect a lot of those type of people are the ones who went down conspiricy and anti-vax rabbitholes, just because those were the types of people who appeared to offer answers.

7

See those kinds of questions are ok in my book. People are curious. The questions that leave me floored are I/my girlfriend/my mother/my next door neighbour/ was involved in a car accident and it was their/my fault. I'm insured let me stop you there. How about you call your insurance agency and ask them any questions you like. THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE THERE FOR. THAT'S WHY YOU PAY THEM. Sorry I didn't mean to yell but it's that fucking obvious.

7
aussie.zone

Yes, yes, yes. I was trying hard not to sound like a smart-arse. Personal opinion is different to seeking facts. Just pick up the phone and get a confirmation from a professional because on here we are all plumbers/gynaecologists/police officers/tax agents etc we can be anything we want to be.

5

If there's something you need to know that pertains to something like work, I don't think there's stupid questions. But when it's things that are easily Google-able (like whenever I'd see on r/writing "can I write x character" like yes... you can, can you write it well, now that is something we can't answer) or is something very insensitive (like asking trans binary and nonbinary people if they've had the surgery). But yeah, I cringe whenever I see things that, y'all could've Googled.

3

So after reading your comment about the font size, I found you can use thumb and fore finger to spread the screen of where you’re reading. Like instagram and looking at photos except you don’t have to hold it down. Idk who’s making the changes but I’m not a huge fan of it. But I’ll eventually get used to it

I'm building my tolerance back up.. On account of my kids so far just not being ok with any type of heat... I'm slowly sneaking in an extra drop or so into their "plain" Bolognese sauce... slightly evil laugh

5

It's totally worth it! My kids are into foods on the spicy side because of the same approach. My daughter adds cracked pepper to her sandwiches. My son loves to add Tijuana or Oaxacan oil to his noodles. My daughter adds this oil when she makes guacamole. Chef's kiss

3

That's a good brand, I wish their bottles where bigger as I use them too quickly.

4

Ohh that’s a nice update!

Been using wefwef the last day or so.

Back is still painful. Got a corset. It helps. lots of sleeping and resting.

Love it! I love how most of the music video is the record spinning. When I was a kid, in my room I'd put on a record and listen while I watched it spin around. It was mesmerising and calming.

My new goal is to not spend enough time on Twitter to hit the ridiculous 600 tweet limit. Reddit and Twitter really have done me a solid and forced me to reduce my social media engagement.

7

How long does it take to hit the 600 tweet limit?

I think it’s still wild they put up those limits.

4

Whoooo. Almost 12 hours straight of working. But then I remembered I had no hours for last Thursday because it was a non starter after an intense psych session. Guess I'll have to do a long day tomorrow as well so I can make up enough hours to cover this Wednesday in addition...

Ok I can do this. Everything i need to do has been written down. Shower, episode, sleep. Won't be heading to the office tomorrow, looking at that shitty weather. I've seen enough insane driving over the last 2 weeks.

7

Have to take my dog to get her stitches out today, I hope she doesn’t get too agitated. She normally doesn’t mind the vet, even when they do unspeakable things to her rear end, but after having surgery she is not too keen on going back. When we went to get her bandage removed she vomited. Hopefully today is the last time for a while🤞

6

Figured out the Mlem app, thanks to whoever suggested it! Still getting to understand the fediverse but happy to be here!

6

Let me help you with that. It's when a whole heap of servers get together and communicate yada yada yada zzzzzzzz. I hope that helps.

6

Is this mastodon?

Sir, this is a Wendy's

Nah, this is lemmy. Mastodon is the fediverse 'twitter' equivalent.

Edit: from Wikipedia: The fediverse (a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe") is an ensemble of federated (i.e. interconnected) servers that are used for web publishing (i.e. social networking, microblogging, blogging, or websites) and file hosting, which, while independently hosted, can communicate with each other.

5

This whole Lemmy thing is just a component of the “federated universe “, to include Mastodon, Kbin, and various other nodes.

The report highlights

rapid user growth (as well as a massive influx of spam bots)

The rumours about Meta dipping into the fediverse with a microblogging server

FBI raids on Anarchist servers

Other fun stuff that might be of interest to new people like me who are like a babe wandering the wood.👶

4

Yikes. Went to the shop and forgot about the whole hyperosmia things after a headcold which hit today. Walked past someone on the street and that perfume was way intense for at least 50m after walking past them.

On the plus side you do get nice nature / tree / plant smells. Would be nice to have that sort of upper respiratory stuff in spring. Would smell delicious.

Glad it's finally (pretty much) dinner time. I've gone through a third of a pack of vitaweats again.

6
aussie.zone

Vitaweet with a little butter and Vegemite or peanut butter is a delicious snack (if you’re talking about the grain like rectangular biscuits)

4
aussie.zone

Lol I wish I'd done that to slow me down but instead I just chainsmoked those vitaweats.

I honestly had no idea it was 3:20 already. I thought it was like two-ish? Wow, bring on home time! Which for me is in less than half an hour! 🥳

6

Back to work after a week off (which became overshadowed by my ear infection). I’d checked my email on Friday and thought I’d dodged the anticipated “welcome back!” Email with a list of extra shit to do in addition to my existing workload. Nope…it’s there, just been sent at 7pm. Ugh.

6
aussie.zone

Pain is all gone, thankfully, but my hearing is still muffled.

I have to wait a few weeks and have my ear re-checked as the eardrum may have been damaged when I experienced the worst pain (work wasn’t happy for me to leave early to have it checked at the time).

5

Fingers crossed it’s all good and the muffledness goes over time. And boo hiss to your work for that!

3
aussie.zone

I can see your post here but yesterday all your posts were deleted. I got a bit worried.

5

Oh I didn't journal yet. Time marches on. I had a visitor today. I'm chalk and cheese to when I saw them last. Cat plays, aa, job looking a bit. Nothing else. This is nice.

Someone turned the lights back on at [email protected]

Is it meant to be memes that pertain to Australia or any meme is an ausmeme by virtue of being posted there from an Australian instance?

4

It's still young so I think you'd still be able to help determine the community's identity. Personally, I'd prefer memes with an Australian flavour.

New to me movie . Today, Manchester by the Sea.

This movie is a much needed counter to prevailing attitudes that arose from "Me" 1960s

Men have feelings too. Grief is a normal part of life and no, therapy doesn't cure everything nor is always appropriate . Sometimes lives are sad and absurd and that is ok.

I can’t remember if you pulled out Apollo 13 the other night but I put that up while I was waiting for the Ashes to start last night.

4

Today was a rushed cooking today so went to the shops to pick up some green curry paste - tried the Marion's Kitchen brand for the first time (normally I am an Ayam brand girl) and it turned out well! I did add some kaffir lime leaves into the curry so that might have also helped

4

What are you picking?

A seagoon Wordle post at this hour? Has jerboa finally shit itself and is showing early posts at a recent hour? I'm confused! Did you post 30 minutes ago or am I going mad?!

5

Something tells me Patrick Cripps doesn't really shop at Cash Converters. I think that may be a fib.

3

Never would have guessed. He looked so convincing in the ad.

I guess that applies to Jeremy Cameron too.

Teaches me to trust commercials!

Any recommendations of a night club in or near Carlton? Planning to go together with my wife, it's our first time.

3
dumblederpreply
aussie.zone

Nightclubs are usually themed in some way. Be it the style of music or the type of crowd that goes there. Like Revs is house music, drugs and dancing; My Aeon is trance music, drugs and dancing; Star bar is B/C grade footballers, the women who like them and drinking. For something nice with your wife I'd see if the Exford still has tango/flamenco dancing on Monday? night. You're both Asian yeah? There used to be Asian nights too, there probably still are. Dream on Queensberry St may still exist, but they ran all different sorts of nights, a lot of Drum n Bass from my experience, nice crowd, not my music.

5
Cendanareply
lemm.ee

Thanks:) okay the theme we didn't consider. Will have a chat later today.

And yes we're both Asian.

2
dumblederpreply
aussie.zone

What are you guys hoping for from a nightclub? Their portrayal in movies isn't generally what happens in actual clubs. Drinking, drugs, dancing and fucking are the common reasons for people to go, but not the only reasons. Given you're already a couple, I'd look for dance classes over clubs. Drinking and drugs, well it may be worth your while, I wouldn't expect any racism at Revs or MyAeon. If you're looking to get sexually adventurous, there's sex and swingers nights out there, not really my thing.

3
Cendanareply
lemm.ee

Read out your post, her eyes lit up as soon as "dance classes" was mentioned.

We will likely drink. Definitely no drugs and no sex with anyone else.

2

Just don't switch partners if they announce to. Rock, Swing, Flamenco, Tango, Salsa are all fun partnered styles. Find a casual place, go for a month, then move onto the next place.

2

Crapshits. So I was cleaning the stainless steel toaster with proper cleaner. The matte part was fine but now the shiny part is all rainbowy. facepalm

I think a bot is chatting me up on Reddit.

Got previously done by a bot awhile ago when others had the same conversation as I did.
