clearing message notifications?

Hello, I’m just wondering how I can clear the message notifications? The little red icon says 20+ no matter what I do to read / click them.

They should just disappear, the "mark all as read" button is left of the refresh button in the top bar.

If they don't go away, then something is wrong.
