Welcome to Numbat Facts.

Numbats are the only member of the family Myrmecobiidae. This saves them a great deal of money not buying presents this time of year.

Yes! And eating them. Same base Greek word for soldiers at Troy being called myrmidons.

3
aussie.zone

Specifically Achilles' soldiers - presumably wore armour that resembled ant thoraxes. Bit of a change from the standard boar's tusk helmet popular on the day.

2

Bronze age armies were very small, so I'm not sure swarming was possible. Interesting thought though.

3

Whooee! Muchos millions! So niiiiice to feel validated (and competent). So take that, imposter syndrome.

1
aussie.zone

Very pretty. I could only see a sliver of it from my window. That is the only downside of having a day off work, the building I work in has awesome views of the sunrise over the Dandenongs.

2

Rothenburg Christmas market! Unfortunately it closed so early that we didn’t get to go to it after dinner, which was sad. Also the famous Plonlein. Rothenburg is so beautiful. If you like beautifully preserved medieval walled cities, this is a gem.

I admit, living in a medieval city is a joy ( I lived in Brussels for ten years,) , feels very much like home. Living in a 400 year old house is a bit difficult, they are cold, draughty and the plumbing and electricity is iffy

4
aussie.zone

I grew up in England for a stretch. The local pub down the end of the road had been there since 1480. Still had the same wooden beams at head height throughout.

4

Bruge is nice for tourists . Brussels is nice to live in.. 😊 I found Ghent and Tongeren interesting.

Walking the doggo and a fly went up my nose....and didn't come out. I guess that's it then. It's been nice knowing you all.

7

i once crushed a fly in my mouth when it flew in while i took a bite of a burger

3

I don't want to take anything away from the numbats appreciation week but can we spend a moment admiring the late David Bowie's fashion sense. It's quite a mild look this month.

7

Winter in the UK. Also he always was one for doing the opposite of everyone else's expectations.

Geez this flight to Canberra is packed and hot! Pretty chuffed with myself that I got everything done on time - dishes, bins, all the packing, really glad for this baggage scale I got from my brother as the gate staff were steadfastly checking all the carry on bags... For a 42 minute flight. Even though I don't have the satisfaction of having finished all my work projects I'm glad to be getting away!

6

I had a client based in Melbourne, but with an office in Canberra. I used to get sent there for day jobs occasionally. I rather liked those missions. I was paid from the minute I left home until I got back, and they paid for everything (meals etc).

It's a neat thing about working in Melbourne that I do miss. It's so close to Sydney and Canberra. Fly for two hours from Perth, you might have left the state. Just.

2

when netflix fucked off password sharing, we cancelled our subscription.

I'm house sitting for a friend for a few days, and have just spent about half an hour mindlessly scrolling netflix and can't find a single thing I want to watch that I haven't already seen.

I feel even better about my decision.

Edit: I lied, I half-heartedly watched the Beckham thing

6
aussie.zone

The magical combo of stremio + torrentio + realdebrid has let me enjoy so much for very little expense or effort. It's great!

3
aussie.zone

I'm trying to watch as much as I can on Stan before whomever's account it is decides to tighten their belt.

3
aussie.zone

these people have Stan, too. I remember Stan being quite shit when it started, but looking at it now there's a fair bit of good stuff there! Reckon I might sign up for a fee months when I get home.

3

Dr Death is really good. 2nd season is due out this month. At the moment I'm watching The Tourist which is oh my lordy good.

3

Dinner has been eaten and I'm still hungry. I was very close to eating the portion set aside for lunch tomorrow.

I think this calls for an emergency apple crumble. With custard.

6

Work Christmas party tomorrow. 12.30 knock off and free calories. excellent 👌 Edit: it also seems to be the season indeed. Few work mates and I all wanted after works drinks and the first two places we tried were reserved for private functions!

This is a PSA. The BBL (big bash league) starts tonight at 7:30 with Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars. I know what youse are thinking yeah we love cricket but for those who have never watched it's a 20/20 game that's quick, fun and you get to watch a lot of slogs into the stands for charity.

Some players are mic-ed up and have a little banter with the commentators for a real feel good game. So guys get on it and support one of our Melbourne teams. Either the Melbourne Stars (green) or the Melbourne Renegades (red).

P.s. Stars home ground is the MCG. The Renegades is at Marvel. Melbourne and Sydney are the only 2 states to have 2 teams in the comp.

5

I hope they're as entertaining as the women's league. I do love the banter they provide in the WBBL. Grace Harris is a cracker.

Also test cricket starts next week on Thursday at 1pm in Perth.

I'm a Renegades guy purely because I live right next to Marvel Stadium. I didn't go to any matches last year but I'll try to get downstairs for at least a couple this year!

2

I'm a Renegades fan too! The man is a Stars fan so there's always a bit of banter going on. I'm gonna try to get to a few games this year as well.

So I finally finished Only Murders in the Building. Maaaan that was not the best season hey. It lost so much of itself. I mean, they hardly did any podcasting at all. Hope they can right the ship for season 4.

That doesn't bode well.. I have been meaning to start season 3.

The Minipeelers have a curriculum day today due to the school concert last night, so I have one element of my morning hustle eliminated. I get to enjoy breakfast, get myself ready for work and swan off 🦢

School concert was pretty funny in parts.. hats off to the enthusiastic fortnite dancing of grade one boys dressed as spiderman, brought the house down!

Sat as a passenger in a Tesla for a fair bit today and it's honestly mind boggling how so many people want to have a car with a giant arse touchscreen and almost no physical controls. There is way too much going on in that screen.

5
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

yah, I was in a Toyota hybrid the other day, it was nearly all touch screen, including starting the car and brakes, it was also very quiet

4
aussie.zone

I drove a Toyota hybrid for a while, that was still sensible, but having climate controls, locking, opening the boot, windows, etc all controlled using a touchscreen... And every time you turn little videos come up showing the vision from the side of the car...

2
aussie.zone

That's just incredibly dangerous. Gimme my old school physical buttons damn it!

4

There aren't even big obvious buttons on the huge touchscreen (like it is the size of a very large tablet or a small notebook. It's huge!) - it's in a freaking menu that you have to search through??!! Even the climate controls, speed etc are relatively small numbers... was so weirder out. Not for me at all

2

😹 going through my folders and found this old collaborative thingamybob. Peacocks, cowboy aliens, dinosaurs, and a FSM dispensing much plonk.

It got a bit over 27 here, and is currently sitting at 25.9.

In any case I would not call a few degrees "way off".

2

I'm not sure what I was seeing but thinking about it, the AI was listening and looking, determining what the human was doing /wanted and then replied.

The AI didn't initiate anything as far as I could tell, just responded

Each of those tasks done by the AI are really hard, we just take them for granted because we can do them easily

2
aussie.zone

Holy shit that's cool. And a little concerning to be honest. We've moved so quickly with this tech. I hope it doesn't hurt us like social media has in many ways.

2

AI could be such a cool and useful tool. My issue is with the unethical ways it's being used

4

Found someone selling these goofy ass posters. I'm thinking of getting the banana and the lemon one perhaps. Are they too goofy or just the right amount 🤪

4

I detest bananas, but these are rather fun. You might want to get a third one for colour balance. ‘Rules’ in the middle of a staggered diagonal could be stylish and picks up the blue from the doona.

Darebin Library has stopped using Libby and just supports BorrowBox now. Kobo's can't run BorrowBox - this was the whole reason I bought a Kobo for my kid - boo Darebin - booooooooooooooooooooooo

calibre library management software lets me upload to my kobo. libgen finds me the books to upload.

2

Yeah, I do that with my Kindle. But my kid is just wanting to borrow a library book you know.

Don't forget errybody today is HOT TAKE THURS. Don't hold back.

I missed a few this week Sun. through Wed. so we're working on that for next week.

4

I agree. The Miniest told me this year that she likes Halloween better. Everyone dressing up, the treats, the decorated houses, the generally partyish vibe, people wandering the streets being randomly friendly to each other, the lack of pressure.. I actually found it hard to argue with her.

2

It's certainly a pain. But little kids keep it magical.

Marvel movies suck now. Endgame sucked! the whole thing was better when it was more grounded, not all this mystic space crap. it peaked with Avengers 1.

7

I'm going to upvote this for being an extremely hot take because I found Endgame to be one of the highlights of my movie-going life. I almost (maybe not almost) teared up when Cap caught Mjolnir. I do agree that nearly all films since then have been pretty poor.

I rarely go into the city anymore. The rallies have made it horrible.

6

People that grunt obnoxiously, or count their reps loudly at the gym should have their memberships revoked. No one cares bro-ham. Just shut the fuck up.

5
aussie.zone

These are all very good hot takes so far.

I'm going to duck for cover with mine:

From a distance people with visible tattoos on their thighs look like they've shat themselves.

Don't get me wrong up close a lot of it is excellent work.. It's a good spot lotta surface area.. but yea.

5

inner or outer? Because if you mistake an outer thigh tatt (as in that area that you always wham on a desk corner) for a pantshit I have questions about the nature of your anus. They are probing.

As a new-ish parent hard disagree. I've given up on ever attracting a mate ever again so ya'll are lucky I'm not wearing the pair with holes and paint all over 'em. Yes. I have "formal" trackies.

5

Please! Anyone who claims a gray workout pant sweaty crotch shot is attractive ought be mulched.

This is just sushi rice, rice wine vinegar, sugar kewpie mayo and cucumber for the roll.

Dipping sauce is soy, rice wine vins, chilli and sesame oil.

I’m trying to think of a way to ask the owner of the cattery about what happened during my cat’s stay without sounding aggressive or like a Karen. They seem like they could get prickly.

I genuinely just want to know what happened there.

I thought I’d prepared her well for her stay and covered all bases and they told me she was being so good but if she was repeatedly soiling in her carrier and had an asthma attack something was stressing her to the extreme. And the soiling wasn’t even mentioned or addressed, she just came home in a soaked reeking carrier.

I don’t know if I should send her back there.

3
Catfishreply
aussie.zone

Dude! Choosing to not pursue it is one thing, but under no circumstances send her back.

9
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

'Hiya, did anything happen while moobeans was there that i should be aware of? We've had some stress reactions'

6
aussie.zone

Well I did contact them to ask how she was going and they said she was going well… so I don’t think that’s going to get me anywhere. I feel like they missed any stress responses there because she shuts down

I’m getting more unhappy with what I think her experience was tbh.

And she also came back smelling of women’s perfume that rubbed off on her when I told them no scent due to asthma and even included unscented detergent for if she soiled.

This is what I was worried about. The stress of other cats and their noises, the busyness of the place, them potentially not reading her care plan and her being so quiet in her distress that it gets overlooked. The alternative was worse but I feel this place wasn’t suitable and whatever the response is I won’t send her back there.

2
dumblederpreply
aussie.zone

Don't go back over the perfume thing. It's a simple request related to a medical condition. The other stuff is a bother but not worth the stress investigating as you're already not going back because of the perfume.

2
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

ask them again, the answer on challenge can be very telling in and of itself. You dropped her off with special considerations that they either should have adhered to, or advised they couldn't accommodate.

2

I've sent the email and it bounced back. If I don't get a response I'm just dropping the rope. I'm not using the place again anyway

Similar story to what happened to my SIL's kitty Butters the Burmese when he went in to a cattery a few months ago for a week.

When they picked him up he was very distressed and howling. He normally never makes a single sound, just that time.

Makes you wonder what some of those kitties go through in some of those places.

2
aussie.zone

Soxcat was notably unhappy after her cattery experiences too, I kinda think it triggered her ovarian remnant thingmajig although I know that's prolly not how it works.

2

It's semi tropical in Canberra atm. Next Wednesday's looking hot and wet as well.

Well it gave me a good laugh anyway. Apparently the force of gravity works against the spread of fire going downhill, and vegetation will act as a barrier impeding its momentum.
