I've finally succumbed to the reddit API changes.

Lemmy is still a bit strange to me, but I think I'm finally getting it to the point of being similar to what I was seeing on Reddit (albeit with much fewer users and therefore less content).

I'm glad to see the Melbourne daily thread be active here.

Seeing how few users there are on Lemmy also makes me feel like I want to be more active?! I was much more of a lurker on Reddit.

23

Welcome!

I think once any group gets too big a lot of people end up just stepping back and watching. On Reddit I always felt that it wasn't worth contributing, if you didn't get a popular reply on quickly it would end up sinking and no one would see it. The fast and loud people had lots of entertaining conversations, but there was not much space for the slow and thoughtful. You are not the first person to say you lurked on Reddit but felt you could contribute here. 🙂

14
aussie.zone

Morning. This is becoming more of an Australia-wide daily thread now.

12

Welcome friend. Feel free to add to a conversation. No one's going to beat you down. Pet pics are most welcome.

11
aussie.zone

I was also more of a lurker, but it is a lot less intimidating to make a comment or post here. Too many trolls, automatic downvoters and "akshually" types on Reddit. Welcome aboard!

7

Totally! I always hated that the conversation for something is already in full swing, so your comment wouldn't be seen by a lot of people. It's also why I like to contribute more in the DT because on the Reddit one it always felt like reading every comment was so daunting. But being able to have not many people here (with most of the comments being in replies) I can at least catch up when I get home from work or during my lunch break.

5

Just finished the last of this calligraphy practice. Only two mistakes!! I'm quite happy with it. I love the red water colour. :) ( oh dear, the closer I look the worse it looks ) 😂

PSA to remind people to not let their mind imagine crazy scenarios.

Friend had been distant all week and not replying to texts so I thought they'd had enough of me or I'd said something wrong.

Sent them a text saying "Hey. If you've got a few free minutes today can you call for a quick chat?" Less than half an hour later they called me and I got to hear about all the crap going on in their life and it cheered both of us up.

Sometimes people just retreat into themselves when life gets hard or hectic and need a friend to draw them out.

Be that friend.

21
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

I feel like retreating and I guess I have been hiding away from all my friends and family though last night I reached out to my dad because I felt like I had to finally.

This place is my last bastion of contact with people because I’m finding it real hard of late and want to hide away and disappear quite honestly.

10
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

Thank you so much for your well wishes.

Trying my best but I never feel it’s enough.

4
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

Just I wished I had listened more to my partner.

She told me to stop paying for her medical stuff incase I had an emergency or something happened and now I’m in that spot where my basic needs are suffering. (Washing machine)

But what sort of a partner would I be if I didn’t try my best to help her?

4

Yeah. I think about what I had done and keep replaying it and cursing myself for choosing or making a decision.

If I didn’t try and wash my oodie I wouldn’t have broken my washing machine.

To think about what’s ahead as well, I know it might not seem like a big problem but it’s one of the few comforts I didn’t want to go without.

I guess maybe what I might do is I wash and taking my stuff to a dryer and pay for the use of a dryer.

4
aussie.zone

Yeah reaching out can be hard when struggling.

Good that you could find it in you to reach out. It takes strength. Many won't reach out at all and just suffer in silence for an eternity.

My friend tries so hard to be the strong and reliable father, husband, and son, and just soldiers on.

He forgets to reach out for someone to help him cause he's too busy helping everyone else.

5
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

My washing machine broke halfway yesterday which is why I reach out to my dad, I was anxious and needed to talk because I’m financially at rock bottom having had to support my partner with her medical bills for the past 3 and a half years.

Mind you I haven’t come up with a solution other than to see how I can handle drip drying wet clothes first or finding cheap or free replacement.

I’ll have to see what happens when i do the next wash and see what happens.

Ever with reaching out it doesn’t help with the problems other than airing them out.

5
aussie.zone

Airing things out with loved ones them fixes more than you realise at the time.

It's just not tangible

4

I hope so.

With my dad he sometimes tries to overcompensate because he wasn’t around when I was growing up and feels like it was a missed chance so his input can come to be a little heavy sometimes.

4
aussie.zone

What scenario should I not be imagining for a friend who stopped responding to texts for minimum a week each time and cancelled two catch ups, after not being able to catch up for almost 2 months because they were so busy? I’m reading signals to stop contacting them.

My pasta

A photo of my shell pasta, mushrooms, chorizo, zucchini, onion, garlic, chives and chilli flakes. I forgot the tomatoes. I called it "everything that was in fridge went into my dish". It tasted way better than it looks.

An early dinner because I was hungry.

18

. Yum. years ago I lived on the same for a month or so but made with couscous and a pack of frozen Mediterranean vegies

one meal a day and I lost a ton of weight

6
aussie.zone

Have you already made yourself a bowl or is that all for me?
Edit. That sentence doesn't make sense I think but I don't care. Give pasta

6

Yum. I’ve got pasta too but very basic.

Yours look very nice and tasty!

Including the early thread with 30 comments, we are still at over double the activity compared to the old r/Melbourne subreddit.

I hope those who don't go to the old sub frequently can find there way here.

17
Hongohonesreply
aussie.zone

Reports from a couple of mates who use it say they find this one buddy and slow to load. I assume they're on a phone. Any ideas or can I inform them of improvements.

Still, this place kicks it's butt for content also. The old daily thread seems to be a lot of the same questions people posted as posts before the great reddit blunder of 2023 which would pretty much be instantly downvoted to the bottom. Loud bangs, tailgating drivers, choppers over reservoir etc. I might be exagurating a little, but it's lost its soul nonetheless.

7

I’m using Mlem on iPhone and it has a few bugs still but I’m enjoying feeling like it’s the start of something bigger and better.

I feel like we flhave a natural filter that keeps the ruder Facebook users there. I would just suggest giving Jerboa a try, put the time into setting it up and subscribing to C/Melbourne+ a few major communities.

You can give them a list of easy links like;

5

Thanks! I'll get onto it, they're good people and most of us know them already.

Ah, yeah I'm using some third party browser. It won't log me in using that, but read only isn't terrible. Maybe I'll use chrome just for this.

2

Look into wefwef through your browser. I made another comment with a bit more detail.

2

I originally made an account with lemmy.world. everything was fine until there was a big influx of users on that instance, then it all slowed down. I then made an account with aussie.zone which is clearly a much smaller instance. Much much quicker now.

If they are iPhone users point them towards the wefwef PWA - https://wefwef.app/posts/lemmy.world/all . It's basically Apollo through a web app.

If Android, Connect or Jerboa are the best apps currently, with RIF and Sync to release Lemmy versions within a month or so.

I'm not sure how to let them know without seeming like we are desperate, so just casually mentioning something like "wow, I can't believe how much less activity there is on the old subreddit compared to the Lemmy community".

Don't be fooled he's/she's just robbed a place. You're their alibi. If you take the pic in landscape it'll be the right way up.

7
aussie.zone

He is super cute, but ProcastifunPolice is here to remind people to keep cats indoors. They are relentless, ruthless killers of native wildlife and are at much higher risk of injury or death outdoors.

7

I completely agree and every one of my cats have been indoor cats, much to their chagrin.

However, who am I to deny pats to such a handsome boy when he asks for them so aggressively?

6

The only thing better than hearing kookaburras is actually seeing them fly between trees I reckon, they're so cool

Huge turnout for the #Yes23 launch at Trades Hall today, despite the dull weather.

Momentum is gathering and it is wonderful to see!

12

Vote Yes in the referendum! It's a great step in the direction of implementing the Uluru Statement. My dream is for state and federal governments to have treaties with the First Nations. We could be so much more as a country!

10

Good to know, my old neighbours are first nations from out back of Alice and told me to vote yes, so that's enough for me! Yes it is.

8

Fantastic. I've been looking at the goddamn reddit side and it's such a racist shitshow (why, oh why did we not deal with Murdoch before this), so I'd started to lose hope. Honestly really excited to see the Yes campaign take shape!

Self-care Sunday has kicked in early with a 7am dry sauna session.

Local gym has an 80 degree dry sauna that is absolute magic. Even more so when it's empty this early and I don't have to listen to people talk shit.

What has everyone else got scheduled in for self-care today?

12
aussie.zone

Hitting up a market, and then lunch with an old friend. And I'm going to wear a nice dress and my favourite shoes 😊

9
aussie.zone

Get a workout in, then who knows. Face mask and chill out tonight!

9
aussie.zone

Good combo.

Clean skin. Clear mind from the workout.

Definitely got your shit together

5
aussie.zone

Workout was an absolute ripper - cycle class and I walked out feeling on cloud nine. Cool down stretches with the bf, then coffee and a shared brownie. Sunday is going awesome!

What else is on for your self care day?! Loving this thread, btw!

3

Sharing a brownie? Yeah not sure about that one 😂

Think I might try and make self care Sunday a recurring thread.

It's an increasingly important part of my week as I continue in my new job.

We practice holistic HR, and a big part of that is our open door policy and being available for everyone who has something going on in their life or at work that they need someone to talk to.

It's equal parts rewarding and emotionally taxing while I get used to it.

3
aussie.zone

I’m in Brisbane for a work conference, so I’ll do some sightseeing today before the conference starts tomorrow.

8

Today will be the Clock Tower Tour at the city hall, then the state art gallery/museum/library and a second market in the afternoon. Taking it relatively relaxed but would like to get some culture in me today. Maybe a stroll in some gardens depending on weather and time.

5

A walk, a mindfullness movement workshop for trans and gender diverse people later. Minecraft for chilling out and skin care. Eating the mega healthy vege stew I made the other day. AA at some stage. Also playing and chilling with my cats seems like self care too.

8

Love skin care on a Sunday.

Sounds like you're well and truly ticking all the self care boxes today

6
aussie.zone

Six hours of overtime - does being able to pay the bills count as self care?

Then some bot training, so I can offload future work. Plus some general good food, a nice long walk with the dog, and some more weights training.

7
aussie.zone

Definitely counts as self care if it's helps you sleep at night knowing you can pay your bills

Bot training sounds more badass than what it is, so I'm just gonna pretend you're training Baymax from Big Hero 6

6
aussie.zone

I think that's the best way of visualising. Because changing a couple of minor settings and doing another test post with a longer timeframe to see what happens really just sounds dull.🤣

Sounds lovely Smeg!

I'm gonna tidy up the house, and make up a batch of florentines. Now I have BF hanging around I can make treats more regularly since its not just me eating them!

2

I am now officially stuffed full of curry.

In other good news, bot #001 seems to be doing better after training - has been running for a few hours without crashing & successfuly conducted a test posting. I've promised it a new wi-fi dongle tomorrow if it can manage to stay awake all night and post succesfully, hopefully that will help too 🤣

Edit: might have spoken too soon, just after I posted this it crashed again. I think it might be related to the code that is supposed to pin the posts which doesn't work (it needs to be updated for the new server edition) so I have gone through and stripped out all the code relating to that process. Finger's crossed that does it.

Spending my Sunday morning doing a job application because it won't happen during the working week. It's rare for good roles to come up in my field and this one sounds perfect, so going for it. I HATE writing cover letters, never been good at it. I open with why the role has appealed to me and anything I write sounds hella corny.

11

Lean into it. A cover letter is basically a fucking fanfic about you and the company being besties

As someone who works in HR, I approve of this comment.

I really need to integrate ChatGPT more into my life. Here I am struggling when AI can help.

4

I want to apologise to everyone here about having to put up and read about my side of things.

I know there are probably many others in tough positions and I’ve probably had too much a winge and complain today.

I should probably just focus on solving the problem and taking it in stride or waiting to solve the problem instead of being so down about all the worst aspects of it all and what it might mean.

Apologies to everyone for the doomposting.

Also, apparently they sent an SMS and email yesterday informing me...I did not receive either, and only checked my flight on account of a comment by @the_procrastinata earlier. Basically culling out it’s primary purpose and it’s existence.

They've limited the amount of tweets you can view, it's 600 for those that don't pay and 6000 for those that do. You also can't send a tweet if you've reached your limit. They also stopped tweets from being able to be shared on outside sources. It's like they're trying to kill twitter.

Lasted one day using the official reddit app. Glad to see Lemmy appears to be legitimately up and coming and an easy format to read posts/comments.

The readability of the official reddit app sadly isnt worth putting up with it.

But honestly I’m okay with that, not that the party was bad but I certainly remembered why we decided we were happy to have a baby and give up the nights out. I really prefer doing stuff like lunches now. Also barely drank and still woke up with a ripper headache. Truly think I’m in the era of dinner parties and picnics now.

All this cold made me start reminiscing about the last roadtrip to Mildura, and out of curiosity I checked the weather there - how is it 2° colder there?????

7

Desert. Drier air. No cloud blankie to keep us all warm(er). Also an unusual burst of cold air & rain in progress across the entire middle of this continent rn.

If I know someone who is hoarding lots of plastic bottles in the belief they will make money when the container deposit scheme comes in, am I a bad person if I don't tell them containers will need to have a specially printed barcode on them to be eligible?

7

That's a tough one. Not really. Don't step on someone's hobby. Plead ignorance. In fact help them out by dumping I mean donating some of yours. (If they're sharing their bed with the plastic then maybe it's time to step in).

Yeah, that won’t work. Even cans now isn’t worth the effort. We kept about 6 months worth, had the yard looking like hell, and were told not to bother conning back without triple the amount.

3

It will be worthwhile for personal quantities if you have a reverse vending machine or return point somewhere you regularly go, but it would not be worth the logistics of collecting and transporting large amounts of other people's discards. And without the label showing the 10c deposit was paid (which won't be there until the scheme is actually introduced) you can't get it refunded, so the old bottles are worth nothing.

Damn, where did you go??? We took up a couple those cardboard green waste bags of tinnies to our local scrap metal and made $200

1

Some joint up behind sunshine. It sounds like a similar quantity to what you had, but they couldn’t be bothered with it.

1

I've been trying random fauxmeat options when I see them on special and I have to say, way to many go for texture and presentation over taste. I got some faux chicken tenders and while they look, smell, and sort feel the part, they absolutely don't taste it.

7

Fish & chips for me. Usually Miller St is jumping at this hour with people getting pizza or f&c. Tonight was dead. Zillions of empty car parks and the f&c shop people were filing their nails and scrolling on their phones. The cost of living is starting to bite down hard I think. Mind you, $18 for 1 piece of fish, 1 scallop, 1 prawn, 1 fishcake and a handful of chips is getting a bit steep for regular purchase.

7

Urgh, you know that feeling when you wake up at a "normal" time, scroll on your phone and then doze off only to bolt awake and it's 11:15... now I'm sitting here with my coffee and I almost regret how cold it is out here. Thankfully my lunch appt has been postponed by half an hour as well. I should at least do one Useful thing today. Mainly clean the kitchen which looks like a disaster zone. I would be bereft without my dishwasher.

We're about to try gozleme from the local kebab shop that opened a few months back.

Hoping it's not shit

::: spoiler leftover-pita-pizza poem Tired of leftovers? Tired of the bore?
No more bland grub, not any more!
Pita bread is cheap and I'm so poor
Ima drop pasta on pita, pizza amateur

Spread that cheese on yesterday's dinner
No new food, am I getting thinner?
No matter! Fire it up, cook it nice and even
For a toasty thirteen minutes plus seven

Blast the gas, spark the light,
A fan-forced two-hundy
Slap that pita on that pan,
I'm so hungry! :::

I miss sitcoms. The kind that are full of corny jokes and have 20 episodes a season. Seems that era of tv is dead, and it’s sad. Shows like Frasier, Seinfeld, Freinds, Big Bang theory etc. I guess with streaming being the main form of tv now it’s a different market.

6

A little bit of daggy excite for the evening. Going off to see Indiana Jones. Hehe.

This weekend has been interesting with the weather to say the least. I did check out the small but fun Fantastic Beasts exhibit. Was hoping also to squeeze a REB tour, but that is booked out till almost mid-August at this stage. Got some goodies from Uniqlo and was lucky to discover the bottom of the bag was torn walking back. Managed not to lose anything.

Again, you know your Llab ain't a Monday person... It has once again come far too quickly!

What have you all been up to?

6

Venting/whinging post warning: Mr Peeler ruined my favourite shot glasses. They were Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec inspired moulin rouge glasses I bought at the monet and friends exhibition at The Lume. I said repeatedly Don't put them in the dishwasher. I even rescued them a few times when he was about to start a cycle and told him again. And what does he do.. the design is all melted and ruined. Aargh! Dammit! End of rant.

The soup I made for diner was very yum. Small dices of onion, carrot, celery, zucchini and corn kernels, fry with generous amount of middle eastern spice mix, bottle of passatta, can of beans and stock. Cook until veg are perfect tenderness and consume with garlic bread. It’s the small dices that make it nice to eat.

I finally got enough FlyBuys points to get another Bunnings gift card. That last 27c seemed to take an awfully long time. Once it arrives I can get more manure and mulch for the garden.

6

Jebus christ, there'a dude happily selling vitamin c powder $15 a 50g pop.

You can get a 5kg bucket for $139.

I kinda wanna get in on the rort and undercut him by $5. Still be making nearly a grand profit.

6

Finally turning the corner with this head cold.

Half awake fever dreams are fucked I do not like them.

6

Housemate and I are on season 8 of our Game of Thrones rewatch, and so far every ep has just been an hour of us slinging jokes back and forth about the quality. Have to say on this rewatch I've definitely noticed the quality got worse around season 6/7, maybe I'll pull out the books for a reread.

6

Oh dear, a mate in total crisis who lives in Europe is not nice to see. I'm glad they made it through the night is all I'm willing to share. I've become one of those people saying no matter how shit something seems, drinking will only make it seem worse tomorrow.

Still it's been a good day. My skin is nice and soft. I didn't quite get the walk in. The cats got a good workout chasing toys though and I can still do some bodyweight stuff tonight. The mindfullness movement workshop was great, I got complete mental silence a few times as we did the movements which uplifted me no end. I left feeling pretty euphoric, the gender kind. Any trans and gender diverse people here, if you haven't gone to any of Transgender Victoria's free workshops and such, do think about gettting along. It's freaking beautiful to be among a tribe who are strangers, but instantly see you. They promote them on their insta.

I had two satisfying naps today. I'm legit turning into a cat lady. The crazy part is sure to come along again at some point but not today.

ASHES UPDATE: (because I know you're all closeted lovers of the ol' bat n' ball): Second test at Lord's (the home of cricket) Second innings. Australia has already batted. England to chase 371. Currently England 4/114.

We've had a few injuries. Pat Cummins copped a shiner to the eye. Nathan Lyon strained a calf doing some sort of gymnastics on the field. It's OK, we're Aussies we get back up and keep fighting.

It's going to be an exciting match tonight folks. I will be watching and anticipating Midnight (blue) bot's second coming. Oh oh oh oh.

I watched Lyon bat last night. It was crazy that he went out and made a run in his state which could have made it worse for him.

I was so happy he got a boundary though. The crowd went wild when it happened.

I lasted until Starc took the 2nd wicket.

Did you watch the entire thing?

3
aussie.zone

Nah I went to bed after the Aussies finished batting. It was very painful to watch Lyon bat and particularly when he had to run.

3
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

Yeah, you could see the pain and grimace on his face after each action.

It hurt a little to see the crowd boo when they weren’t going for runs.

I wonder how long he’ll be out for now? Will he even come back?

3
aussie.zone

Thinking about the movie I watched yesterday, The Field. ok. It's about the tragic consequences incurred by a person who values possessions and their rights more than they value people .

6

I saw that years (decades?) ago, but don’t remember all that much apart from the beautiful green field. Will have to go back for a rewatch

Someone motivate me to get up and go get my nails done, because bed is warm and I am tired. But I do want my nails done.

5

Mmm warm bed. Pretty nails. But it's cold out there. Pretty nails. I can't be bothered getting dressed. Pretty nails. Maybe I can get a coffee while I'm out. Pretty nails. My nails would look really good wrapped around a coffee. Pretty nails. Ok I've got this. Pretty nails.

6

You got this sister! It's not that cold and you can wear gloves to the salon.

No ☹️

Bot fell asleep. The new thread overnight somehow managed to get created labled as indonesian, so was invisible for most people. The bot was woken up and instructed to create a new post manually, and has further training scheduled today.

As a positive, breakfast has been including some lovely indonesian options this morning.

13

It’s Bot’s 1st day on the job, and we all make mistakes. I’m sure it’ll do better tomorrow. Thanks for all your New Bot mentoring, Raven!

5

Aww, well we'll see how it goes. I, for one are excited. Once you get one going, it should prove super helpful!

2

Sounds like if it did the right thing except with a wrong language, that is pretty close to it working correctly! Fingers crossed for tonight!

1

Working perfectly, and not at all involving anyone logging in under that account to manually create a post. Don't pay any attention to the Raven behind the curtain....

Anyone got a suggestion for a drive to do, even on a dreary day like this? Most of my drives are to hiking spots or wineries, lol.

Hear me out

Eat it while cooking the other half

Yea or nay?

Tried a new type of noodle for lunch today - basically 2 minute noodles, but protein enriched (ie they added pea flour). I was uncertain about them because I'm not a fan of most pea/legume products, but they were pretty decent. It turns them in to 5 minute noodles though.

That looks yummy. I tried to find basic packs yesterday but they were all sold out all Woolies.

Fries and 2 minute noodles (cheap) are in short supply again :(

What flavour is that? Looks maybe spicy?

3

I didn't use the flavour sachet. I used a tub of chicken stock concentrated, and added some soy sauce, sesame oil and some chilli paste.

Edit: forgot how to tag on Lemmy

No beef to go with my daikon tonight so had to change plans. This time I used the mini chopper to scramble the tofu for my garlic chilli noodles which was a lot easier. Looking forward to it. Might chuck some mini spring rolls in the airfryer for an entree.

A couple of weeks ago I added someone from a dating app on Instagram (at their suggestion) and the chat has been on and off, I'm considering biting the bullet just suggesting we go for coffee this week. Thoughts?
