Did everyone in the 80s own one of these?
I had one of these in the bathroom and would listen to the radio while I curled my hair.

Yes, it was formally mandated in 1985 that every US household had to have at least one in working condition and powered on at all times, including power outages (hence the battery backup).
I had mine in the 90s when I moved out on my own the first time. That said, pretty sure it was a charity-shop purchase.
They are still thrift store purchases. I've seen some recently. They don't die.
Yes they were popular. No cell phones where you could just set an alarm. And people didn't have a TV in every room in their house as many do today. It was normally in the bedroom. So it was your morning alarm and the radio was the entertainment
