Can relate. Signal is luckily mainstream enough to bring some people in after some convincing.

Which one are you?

Oh nice try government, I won't fingerprint myself in a public comment like some kind of sucker 😏

39

Hah, too late. You're already being linguistically fingerprinted by your grammar and word choice. Only option now is to not comment on public forums anymore I guess. 😩

8

Tech Conservative here but don't 100% agree with the icons shown. Everyone has their own needs and reasons to be the way they are and that's ok.

17
lemmy.world

Lol using tails as a main OS. That’s something.

OS ? nah that's bloated and adds too much security flaws, true paranoids use UEFI programs

True paranoids don't use computers. They build a wooden cabin in northern Finland, grow their fish from FOSS genecode since other fishes have microplastic tracker chips inside them now, develop a supernatural sense to see "glowie" auras, and only talk in smoke signals feds do not understand (It runs on the Matrix protocol) all while following FSF philosophy

What's the problem with e-books? Even more the ones you download into your computer and open with okular or some emacs e-pub mode?

(Anyway, I don't know what half of those icons are.)

12

Yeah, it's a meme, best not to overthink it, it does only make a limited amount of sense lol

5

I'm in the same boat. I feel like going any further than Newborn Paranoid and you start sacrificing so much of your time, money and convenience it's not worth it anymore.

10

Definitely tech conservative. I’m aware of all the problems with big tech and closed source software but I’m not going to jump through major hoops to make sure I’m adhering to Stallman’s principles.

10

To be honest, Void doesn't belong in newborn paranoid. That distro is so so far from every other Linux distro regarding GNU philosophy. They're closer to the *BSD philosophy than anything else, but it doesn't fit nicely there as well. Generally, Void has this "if it passes all tests, we merge it" philosophy. It has a lot of proprietery software in the non-free repo.

From what I've gathered so far, their point of view is, if it works, why not use it (which is also my point of view to be honest, so I'm absoluteley fine with that). They didn't even go dark with their sub on reddit. There was a post asking what will the Void sub do about the protest, that post got deleted. Bascially, they see the sub as a means to an end, nothing more. They don't have to run a forum for troubleshooting problems, it's free (as in beer) and it works just fine. They probably don't use any mod tools or very little (it's a small sub), thus, this API thing doesn't affect them at all, so they see no reason to go dark.

I'm not even a tech conservative, I use Linux cuz it's fun and challenging, plus you learn new things all the time. Those are my main resons. Sure I could do the same with *BSD, but it's got a lot less software and drivers, so I just stick to Linux (mostly).

I’m between newborn paranoid and tech paranoid. I wish my friends and family would stop using spyware but it’s out of my control

Same, though I don't get what is supposed to be the problem with Firefox

2
lemmy.world

I think it’s cause “Firefox is good but could be better”. Type thing. I use Firefox and LibreWolf. LibreWolf is a hardened version of Firefox

3

lemmy.world

Ah, I see. I always liked Mozilla because they are non-profit and contribute extremely much to FOSS/FLOSS, but I will take a look at LibreWolf, thanks!

2

I chose to use Firefox since it's the only alternative to all the other chromium browsers, but I do switch between it and Brave from time to time

2

Tech conservative for the most part. I prefer FOSS, but I'm fine with using some propietary software

10

Between conservative and newborn paranoid. I use Fedora and Firefox, but (microg) LineageOS and F-Droid on my phone. Also I don't know what half of those apps are but I'd like to use matrix.

8

I've wanted to meet FSF member in real life for a long time. No luck so far.

As for Stallman, I find it sad that he has been right about many things. I will not do what he does but I appreciate the fact that someone like him exists and still fights for what he believes in.

7

"Wants to become a full paranoid but fears the slippery slope."

I feel personally attacked yet fully approve this characterization.

7

Tech conservative for sure. I own a tuxedo laptop with... Tuxedo os. I use opensource apps as much as possible. But I use Google tools too. For sure I hate Apple 😂

7

Mix of newborn and tech paranoid. And i think i'm moving slowly to the paranoid side (started reading OpenBSD docs lol)

7
lemmy.world

Newborn Paranoid 100%. I both fear and desire the slippery slope. Also, what's the browser next to LibreWolf?

6

it's qutebrowser, a vim-like web browser based on qtwebengine (chromium). i used it a lot,it's good

3

It's qutebrowser, kind of like a more "suckless" fork of chromium. Also got an adblocker built-in, which is basically just a hosts file but for qutebrowser.

3

I remember there being one more version with TempleOS users at the end

6

Tech conservative, although I have to admit that I like MacOS a lot. When it comes to Linux, I use and love Debian

6

Somewhere between Tech Conservative and FSF Member.

I don't care about Stallman as a person. I care about being able to use the software I like and not get spied on, and the FSF actively works to ensure I can do that, so even if trying to use all FSF-approved software isn't practical now they're still helping to make things better. They are an important counterbalance to the bullshit.

6

I'd probably fall into the Tech Paranoid if it weren't for gaming. I'm honestly rooting for Steam to jumpstart the Linux gaming ecosystem even more.

6

Honestly the same for me. With the addition of a couple of work software that are Windows only (ugh)

1

I'm ashamed to say I brushed shoulders newborn paranoid before realizing I'm too much of a dumbass and then toned it back to Tech Conservative. Though I randomly use Tor for absolutely no reason other than just being a masochist I guess

6

I'm probably a tech conservative. I prefer FOSS, but will use proprietary software if I absolutely have to. Also I use arch btw

5

Tech conservative and will probably stay here for life. I really hate what the big tech corps are doing but feel like this is a sustainable level not just for me but for the general user. This is what we should have built out as the standard in the first place but money sure does ruin things fast and now we have a world controlled by Microsoft and monitored by Google

5

I was newborn paranoid at one point, and am starting to shift back to tech conservative

5

Tech conservative moving to newborn paranoid, depending on who I feel I need to hide from at the moment. I'm radically opposed to the concept of private corporations anyway.

5

I use Windows 10 but see myself in "The Tech Convervative" zone. I will eventually do the switch to Pop!_OS hopefully lol

5

Dang, I just got stereotyped so hard as the tech conservative. Right on the nose with zorinOS and brave/firefox lmao

4

Same. Closer to tech paranoid for me I'd say. Only reason I don't run DWM + Gentoo anymore is because of time, but the control freak in me gets ever so tempted to reinstall it once again.

4
lemmy.world

What is the first browser and all apps except f Droid under "newborn paranoid"?

4

I guess that makes me a tech conservative with a hint of newborn paranoid, based on the provided. But I don't think the name "tech conservative" is very fitting at all. To me those words would describe someone has been using Linux for 20 years and hates everything that is new just out of principle and will never change their mind (e. g. containerized apps, Wayland, systemd etc.). I couldn't be further away from that stereotype.

4
lemmy.world

I spend 95% of my day on Debian but I don’t like it. Definitely “Tech Normie” according to this guide.

3

Honestly, I know it may not feel like it, but any linux usage, or even an understanding of what linux is, pretty much knocks you out of tech normie territory. One of us! One of us!

5

The only tech normie icon I have installed on any personal devices is whatsapp. The rest are pure cancer.

I tick a few boxes across the rest of that spectrum. I land mostly in tech conservative.

3

Am a tech conservative that watched Stallman's Ted talk and watch(Ed) luke smiths. Not not gonna lie tho luke is maybe a bit wacko but he's entertaining and often brings interesting points .

2
lemm.ee

I use chrome and windows 11. So I am a normie according to this :/

2

Lol last one is extremely funny. But I'm also probably covering the spectrum from "tech conservative" to "tech paranoid", ticking boxes of each of the three

2

I occasionally go down to newborn paranoid but almost always get drawn back up to tech conservative cause of either convenience or cause there's some program I need that forces me back up.

2

I have moved from the left side (tech normie) only it was DOS 6.22 and Win 3.1 (apple was something you ate back then in the UK) to Tech Paranoid today with aspirations to fully become an FSF member

2

So this is only somewhat related... But right now using Tor for normal work can be inconvenient because (i. a.) it has slower transfer speeds due to limited number of nodes. But I'm wondering, if in a hypothetical world where Tor takes over majority of internet, could it offer similar convenience as currently non-Tor internet, just anonymous?

2

What's make me suspicious about TOR network, is that most of the end nodes are controlled by the US government... And because it was first build for the US army.

If only people would switch to I2P, this would greatly improve anonimity !

2

Tech conservative, with a bit of full-blown tech paranoid. I come across as a weird combination of tech-savvy and complete luddite for the laundry list of services I don't use. Not because they're proprietary, but because they offer me nothing I want.

Disclaimer: I use Arch, btw.

2

I feel like a weirdo compared to this scale. I use Ubuntu on my desktop and steamos on the steam deck but I also main chrome for my browser because as much as everyone else hates Google (rightly so) I actually don't mind their browser and I like the centralization of their services tied with having a Gmail account. And I have a pixel 4a. I'm weirdly into tech but I'm mostly a software Luddite.

2

Firefox has better ad-blocking capability than qutebtowser, and I'd use both for different purposes, if I wasn't a lazy bum that CBA to bind two browser keyboard shortcuts. I could use qutebrowser to view ad-free documentation sites, but meh.
I use arch btw, specifically because of the healthy pragmatism towards proprietary software.
I love FOSS, don't get me wrong, but there's worthwhile stuff besides Nvidia drivers that I'm not willing to part with. I don't even have an Nvidia card.

1

For me is bits and pieces of tech conservative, newborn paranoid, and tech paranoid.

1

i'm definetly newborn paranoid, but i actually belive opera and opera GX are great browsers nowdays

1

Im probably somewhere between the first four panels. I’m debating about at least partly using Chromium again since some stuff I do doesn’t work on FF and like macOS and Windows the most since they (mostly) just work out of the box. However I’m not comfortable with WhatsApp etc, am using Ubuntu and Arch on some machines and do prefer Open source for some software categories. And for some stuff I’m manually checking the source code and am compiling it myself since I’m paranoid. (Mostly password manager and similar).
