I feel like part of a new group now, the white and patterned cat group. Let's give them extra scritches to celebrate our beautiful creatures.

Oh no. Came home last night to see a white rose placed on the windscreen of my opposite neighbour's car. She's elderly and the only one who talked to everyone and knew everything about the place, but been unwell for quite a while and I haven't seen or heard from her in months. I remember how lonely and weak she was at times.

Just heard some noise outside my door and opened it to see... her sister and niece were there in her apartment and they confirmed the worst. :( RIP, N. You might've been a bit of a curmudgeonly old soul at times but I hope you meet many wonderful fluffy kitties wherever you go. (She loved soxcat)

Had a great day at the op shops. Got special edition copies of Deliverance and The Fifth Element with commentaries and docos, a michael franti cd, a packet of jewellery findings with some top quality crystals for $1( will string a necklace later tonight ) and a good jumper for doing calligraphy in as it won't show ink stains. Plus a cool genu-wine vintage marcasite ring. Nice . 😀

Last night I went on my Twitter for the first time in ages only to find my account had switched from private to public without me knowing. I am furious. I post pics of my child on there and have also talked about my abuser on there. Not to mention everything I share is in the context of it being PRIVATE to my handful of online friends who use it. I am deleting the account today but I have no idea how long it was just sitting there open and who may have seen what.

Probably happened as part of the changes they did to make it so only logged in users can view any tweets at all. Looks like twitter is intent on killing itself.

10

Such a shit show. Plus Twitter hardly works half the time if you aren’t using the app. I refuse to have the app otherwise I will totally go on and doomscroll, but the browser version is awful ever since Elon took over. Hence hardly going on lately.

I deactivated my account yesterday when I realised I had to log in to see content and thought, meh, I don't use it, they have transphobia in their dna and Elon Musk is a jerk.

2

Yes thankfully just a little account though I notice the views per tweet were up from like 10 to 30-40 😩 I’ve basically just been delaying the admin of closing the account and organising where to stay connected with people elsewhere but this is beyond the last straw for me. And agreed. I’m so done with these misogynistic transphobic god knows what else fuck head run social media companies.

Dogs in raincoats.

aussie.zone

There’s someone in my area whose greyhound wears not only a raincoat, but also bootees. Very cute, and it’s so used to them it doesn’t even do a funny walk

5

My sister has a greyhound. Because she has approximately 0% body fat on her Molly needs to wear pyjamas each night during winter. Every night after dinner she trots over to the box where her pyjamas are kept and makes intense eye contact with you until you put them on her.

Good for the greyhound that it’s used to the shoes. Shame for you because watching dogs doing the bootie walk is a 100/10 dopamine hit

5

I love watching videos of dogs wearing their boots for the first time and how confused and stuck they are.

4

aussie.zone

Also dogs in prams and nappies. What a time to be alive!

3

The best is when you see someone getting into a train with a pram but it turns out to be a dog in the pram, not a baby. The best kind of surprise.

5

So many of them around on my walk this morning. Just so outstanding.

So I was browsing r/melbourne and I saw a post that said hmu if your a teenaged girl. I wasn't gonna reply but i thought fuck it. So I asked "How old are you?". Straight away a chat message. I chose to ignore. Then the post was deleted. My instinct says "You dirty fucking cunt".

10
cuavasreply
aussie.zone

I’m in my 40s, and I’ve helped out with the local kids’ soccer thing on Friday afternoons after school and various other things. Teenage girls think I’m great – I guess I give off a “cool dad” vibe or something. But teenage girls are incredibly annoying. I can’t even imagine actively seeking them out.

10

Yeah... I just cannot imagine wanting to do ANYTHING with people under the age of 18. Like I get that for a lot of predators it is about power, but you're 27 hanging out with a 16 y/o, that's fuckin' loser behaviour mate. Sure the 16 y/o might think you're cool because you've got a car and you can drink alcohol. But 27 and deciding that people your own age can't wise up to your tricks, so you choose to hang out with teenagers? Gross.

3

Are you sure it wasn’t that weirdo Jan Dacion from Hoppers Crossing? He started a Facebook group trying to recruit people to start a “To Catch a Predator” group. Given his history of posting bizarre things on the web, I get the feeling he’s mentally ill and not getting the support he needs.

4

Infinity is still going but I think it's going to move to a subscription based service. Not sure if I'll use it after that. The Dev isn't interested in making something for the fediverse ATM.

2

After a good training session today I think Bot #001 is ready to try posting a new daily thread tonight. Pinning does not seem to be working so that bit will still need to be done later, but I'm pretty confident the basic post will work. If if does not work (it should be at midnight) someone will have to make one manually again.

I will need to do some work on the format and exactly what to say - unfortunately the bot is not very imaginative.

10

What is everyone bringing to pot luck dinner this weekend? I have for you all a passionfruit ginger appletart.

Went to shops to get some things and left with a new smartwatch, I've been wanting one for ages and the delirium of my UTI made it happen. Since I've been saving for a new car I've not bought myself anything nice in a very long time so it feels good to get myself something flashy.

9

I’m going to spend the morning tidying my flat. It’s become a bit…sus while I’ve been sick, and I’m starting to mend enough to want to do something about it.

9

Day 7 of exercise accountability post. I didn't feel like it because I'd been wandering around the local farmers market and then came home and sampled sunflower seed vodka which I'd bought. It's very nice! But I thought, "if I don't do it now I'll never do it." Looked ahead and tomorrow is another rest day, so that gave me a bit of motivation! I said to myself, as always, it's a 10 minute workout and you can make time for it! I haven't weighed myself yet because the truth is even though I've been exercising I haven't really done anything about my diet at this stage, so I'm not expecting any sudden miracles there. I wanted to get into a routine with exercise before I started fiddling around with my diet.

9

We are going to a party tonight. First night out without baby… I’m so nervous as he doesn’t do super well at night when he’s tired. Don’t know if MIL understands what she’s signed up for. Reaaaally hoping he does okay and I don’t have to leave early 🙏🏻

3

I miss my dogs. One was my absolute heart dog. She came to me in my hour of need and was just.....the best. We clicked.

But...it's time! I need to hear a dog tapping at the door again (despite there being a dog door they can get in and out of).

3
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

That’s so sweet to hear of how heartwarming that is.

Do you have a particular breed or type of dog or will it be a thing where you’ll see which one you have a connection with and see if it clicks?

2

I like working dogs - dont need a purebreed, but will find myself some sort of kelpie, heeler, collie, whatever. Something I can take to classes for either animal work (sheep/cattle) or nose work. It's excellent training and a good way to build a relationship. But let's be honest - I'll probably go to a shelter and fall in love with a completely random chihuahua and a great dane and take them both home.

There we go.. went over the road for 5 minutes. Snapped a photo of some fire. Now I can say I attended the Firelight Festival 2023.

9

I opened the balcony door to look at the lasers in the sky and there was a cat meowing on my balcony (note I am 11 floors up). I've seen this kitty before but last time, I had my door open and I didn't notice it had come in to check out my apartment and it ran out when I turned around and noticed it.

This time it meowed and invited itself in for a poke around. I think it checked out every inch of my apartment then left politely (I left the door open so it knew it could leave). It turned back up 30 minutes later so I opened the door again and it again came in meowing at me and rubbing against my leg, and exploring more. I felt it had probably explored enough after 15 minutes and walked it out but it's still sitting outside my door looking at me.

My new best friend.

Trying to teach bot recruit #001 to date.

Currently showing today's date as 01 MMM 2023. Apparently instructions unclear.

The current code includes an instruction somewhere to mark itself as a bot account, which is a problem as it is currently posting from my account. I might need to create a separate account for it. It will mean that if anyone marks to block bot accounts they won't see any automatic threads which could be a bit of a problem too.

8
aussie.zone

Let's start with making threads first, bots need to advance quite a bit more before they're ready to date

8

I think I’ve just made the worst decision ever.

I decided to wash my oodie and it’s so heavy water now. The washer couldn’t cope with the weight of it when it tried to spin it down (on gentle).

I’m now turning on the heating to help it dry, I don’t even know if I can get it dry at this rate.

I have backup oodies thankfully but this is the worst weather to be washing it in.

Dumb decision by me and yours truly.

It's simpsons quote day right?

Please please please please please please please please please.

Finally going to get my arse into the great outdoors and walk a bunch of ks before I get the few groceries I need. I have a botanic gardens and beach just around the corner ffs. It;s an average looking day but I have a floral umbrella, of course. I can hear birds chirping outside. I applied for a decent sounding job today and got a response to not so decent job too.

In other news: Wow! my feet have shrunk! This is good news, I was ladies 11 which aren't easy to find, but 10 is a bit easier. I'll have to go and check some 10s out. I'm not into heels, but fuck me if there aren't amazing ladies boots which rarely have sizes up to 11 without being really expensive.

8
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

I have wide feet and it's hard to find a good fit. You really just have to go to shops and try them on. Go mid afternoon when your feet are their largest too.

good luck

5

Thanks for the tip! Might wait till next winter and hopefully they're more like the final size they shrink down to.

1
aussie.zone

Seymour! The house is on fire! No mother, it's just the Northern Lights.

Edit: Oh wow that's interesting that your feet have shrunk. But also have fun with that, size 10 is really hard to find. I'm technically a size 10.5, so it's great when I buy like vans or American brand shoes. So it's like, I can buy a 10 and be a bit of a tight squeeze, or I can be a size 11 and find fuck all.

3
Hongohonesreply
aussie.zone

Damn, oh well, apparently I might drop two sizes, if I'm a lucky. I get a bit dysphoric looking at ladies shoes so I've not really looked very much. I'm still pretty early on though. I'm starting to notice a lot of subtle and some not so subtle changes. It's pretty freakin cool.

2

I won't say it's impossible because I can still find shoes in my size, it's just a lot harder to look for. Though there are some brands I like that make larger shoe sizes which is cool. My stepmum has wide feet so it's really hard for her to find shoes as well. I know that won't stop the dysphoria magically (I wish it could tho, because like even though we're opposite, I 100% am with you and totally get it), but just know that even for cis women it's hard to find the right shoes.

1

Today is Saturday you do you say, but it's also the day Reddit terminates my third party apps privilege to existence :(

I'm guessing (hoping) they'll do it closer to when it hits 9am wherever their headquarters is, that'll give us all a bit more time, but since it's all APIs and computers, it wouldn't surprise me if everything does the second it hits midnight there

Greeting this weekend with an absolutely ripper UTI! Have a few unavoidable errands and then it's home to drink an oceans worth of Ural and cry.

7

Hot tip that I found out last time I had a UTI - if you end up needing a prescription, ask your gp to give you one with a repeat. That way, if you get another within a year, you already have a prescription ready to go. If you don’t, go get the script anyway and the medicine lasts 3 years. Saves you another trip to the gp/the bill.

Just make sure you take complete the full cycle of the pills because antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a terrifying reality

7

Nooooooo mega RIP :'( Mate, if it's really bad, I'd recommend you just go straight to any drs and get an antibiotic and be done with it.

In my experience "flushing it out" only works on mild infections and only when they're at the start. One time I tried it over covid lockdowns and it kept coming back over a month, by the time I saw the GP I had to take an antibiotic that fucked up my GI tract for another month.

Travel tip: I'm writing this because I didn't know this service existed so maybe others don't know either.

LT;DR version: pre-purchase international SIM cards from Melbourne-based online store so you can use mobile data with decent data caps as soon as you land overseas.

Long version: (I'll use spoiler tag to avoid a huge text post appearing by default)

::: spoiler Expand Long Version Did you know there are services where you can pre-purchase international SIM cards before you travel, which will be activated on the date you specify? When I've travelled internationally in the past, I have gone SIM hunting after I've arrived, which can take a few hours off your day and can be tricky if you've landed somewhere where you don't speak the language and need to use your phone's navigation without any service (real life experience for me in France 2017 trying to drive myself to a convenience store in the suburbs near Lille). I'm not even going to entertain the idea of roaming with my Aussie SIM. I need more data than the piddly amounts they overcharge for. I also don't need to be contactable via phone or SMS on my Aussie number while OS. Apps all use push notifications for authentication (banking, microsoft, google, etc)

Anywho, cut to planning for my upcoming US trip and I find out there's a Melbourne based SIM store called simcorner who I was able to buy an UNLIMITED DATA 30 day T-Mobile SIM through for $67 AUD. It took a few days to arrive but I've now received and registered it for activation which should happen while I'm in the air on my way to LAX in August. All I need to do is swap SIMs on the plane and when I land I'll be up and running right away. No muss. No fuss. :::

Do you order thin or thicker pita? I haven’t used it too much but with a good tomato pasta sauce and cheese and whatever else you want to through it in makes an awesome cheese melt pocket.

3

Yep. My favorite work lunch is a piece of flatbread with a couple of slices of meat, a dribble of sauce and chopped green leafy veg, rolled and toasted in a flat sandwich press. Crunchy bread and hot insides. Yum. Only downside is the liquid (very tasty) that dribbles out the open end. Recommend eating over a plate, the sink or the side of a boat.

3

At the airport for a Virgin flight and it is CHAOS. Finally made it to the front of one line to ask a question about an oversized piece of baggage, and then got sent to the back of another long line without having my question answered and to a line where my question won’t get answered. They’re trying to prioritise people whose flights are leaving early, which I get, but I bet I get shit from gate staff about my oversized item.

5
aussie.zone

That's a stressful situation, hope you got there in the end. Why are airports always so disorganised once they get busy? It's not like these process problems are novel for them to solve.

4

It was quite stressful, but I managed to make it onto my flight safely in the end. Apparently there are a big shortage of air traffic controllers as a bunch were laid off during COVID and now winter illnesses are hitting the remaining staff.

I’m doing my Apollo migration and noticed that ![email protected] (am I doing that right?) had more subscribers than almost any other community I signed up to.

Is this a case of massive well done, or wefwef fetching incomplete data?

Well this is depressing.

I thought I’d have a little relief itch the tax return looking and I’ve just had a quick look at what I’d get back and it’s ended being nowhere what I thought it was going to be.

I’ll be lucky to get back 150 dollars.

I really needed something good to happen in light how tough it’s been supporting my partner and this just is indescribable.

5

I still have HECS that get paid down every fortnight via my salary, it’ll be interesting to see the reduction in my pay thanks to this next Wed.

6

5
aussie.zone

But heeeey stage 3 tax cuts baby!

Very inegalitarian.

(PS are you BWD on the old DT?)

1
aussie.zone

Tax returns are always bittersweet. On one hand, it's nice getting a lump sum at the end of FY.

On the other hand, I know it's just my own money - that my work has overpaid as taxes - and it would've been so much better for it to be sitting in a high-interest savings during the year, instead of earning nothing in ATO's pocket until I get it back later...

1

I guess I got my hopes up and thought I’d get a little bit of relief.

It was nowhere near what I was expecting.

I guess at least I don’t owe the ATO anything and have to pay them back. That’s the only bright side to it.

I feel like people would have made the switch by now. ? The writing on the wall has been around for a while.

I'm someone that was in denial. Now that the app I was using to browse reddit is down I've had to do some research to figure out where the communities have gone..

I think a lot of people were apathetic but are finally pulling the pin just because their favourite apps have been scuppered. I'm not going to lie, even I thought there was a chance of a last second Hail Mary pass but evidently not

The Hail Mary was a pipe dream. Reddit wants to go public. From what I understand, the valuation has been slashed (I’m not sure why but I don’t think it’s the API fiasco) so that offering could be pushed back a bit? Reuters reported that reddit was aiming for 2nd half of this year.

The NSFW subreddit piece is the thing to watch. I think it’s a lynchpin to mass migration. ??

I'm just surprised the 3rd party app developers didn't start making apps for the fediverse earlier, since they've known about this for a month - I can't help but think they were also hoping that reddit would cave at the last minute.

Very curious to see where the NSFW subs go, too.

There was some that were undecided that's why there was emergency spruiking done.

5

I wish I had the energy now that I did at 5 a.m. when I was trying to get back to sleep. :(
Still, first load of laundry done and have gone through two bags of put aside until later while listening to a podcast and getting drive-by snuggles from Sammi.

I tried a Reece's mini cup chocolate. After unwrapping the sweet, I popped it it my mouth and nearly swallowed the additional paper (like a patty pan) that it was sitting in. So I guess this is a PSA.

The chocolate was mega sweet. Much prefer their icecreams.

Today's new to me movie. The Field by Jim Sheridan with Richard Harris, Sean Bean and John Hurt .

Pretty good. Not sure what is was about. It's easy to do evil things when you believe you are a victim and righteous. Don't believe people who tell you doing bad things is ok because your target deserves it.

4 hobbits. Worth a rewatch.

also, boromir died. again.

Schindler’s List (masterpiece, almost a perfect film in my eyes) or cricket?

Both are on TV

Spent 3 hours at the hairdressers today, only 45 mins of which was the actual cut. Think I'll try somewhere else next time. Recovering from some dead lifting today and just gonna do some bathroom and kitchen cleaning at pace.

Hmm this wefwef.app web app for Lemmy is pretty slick except it seems to be missing all of the formatting options when writing comments. No add image/spoiler etc.

Everything else about the experience is decent until Boost arrives. It seems to remember my comments sorting preference which is a win and the red line from top level comments is gone.

Edit: spoke too soon on remembering sorting preference. It reverted to hot from new on a fresh launch. It did remember it while I was navigating around within the same session though.

Basically the same as Jerboa then. Jerboa does have all the markdown options, but it can't display half of them. My eyeballs have been scarred by many a thing because they don't believe in hiding spoilers

The chud strikes again!

I don't think the duty free is helping me much we'll get there.

4

If you gonna do the duty free make sure there's plenty of water mixed in there too.

Oooooh momma.

I've mentioned that the house is built on a hill, so it's raised. I've also mentioned we have the 6mx3m underhouse basement area that's plumbed and wired as it was a ground level laundry (now claimed by His Lordship as his brewery) . But. Uh did i mention the subfloor area separate to that? About 2m head clearance that expands literally under the rest of the entire house?

'Cos when i said 'working on basement' today, that's what i was talking about. Ima gonna need more shelves......

Has anyone used their own gender version of the Snapchat filter “my new twin” on themselves? I did it and it either gave me body dysmorphia or I’m actually depressingly ugly. And how would I even know which one.

Why doesn't mine look like that? Why? Why? Why must life be so hard? Why must I fail at every attempt at masonry?

5

This reminds me of the meme that came out early in the pandemic as someone’s boss had a potato filter turned on in Zoom and couldn’t work out how to remove it.

The actual answer is a machine has made a weird, inhuman version of yourself. don't read into it. It's AI facesalad.

Everyone of quality knows about Harlan Ellison! Although AM is pretty much a standard mad god trope.

Has anyone sold anything through Etsy or other sites? I am googling but I like to ask for real experiences, what's the process of paying tax etc? How easy was Etsy to use?

Damn. A few of the book instagrams I follow are posting their 6-month recaps. I thought I was doing a really fucking exceptional job with my 12 books read so far this year.

Fifty-five. One of them has read 55. How is that even possible? They can’t possibly be earning enough from social media for that to be their full time job. And when do they shower? And clean their house?

Anyway, what are you guys reading at the moment? I’ve got Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone going at the moment. It’s so good so far.

And I’m trying to make my way through Junji Ito’s works and Ring and other Japanese horror for a class I’m teaching next semester. Can’t say I’m loving Ito’s stuff.

Was all set to have a semi lazy day of random house cleaning when one of the mini peelers reminded me of my promise to take her to the farmers market. Off we go!

Good morning! 🤗 Yarra City Council held it's first citizenship ceremony in Apr-23, after the feds lifted a ban imposed on the council in 2017 (political controversy). Does anyone know where the ceremonies were held in the interim or has this created a huge backlog? Thanks

2

from the Guardian Aug 2017

Instead, citizenship ceremonies for residents of the local government area, which has a population of 80,000, will be conducted by neighbouring councils or by the immigration department. The department will hold a ceremony in Yarra council on 26 January.
