2023 Austrian Grand Prix Race Weekend Thread

Welcome

Welcome to the race weekend! Please use this post to discuss all the sessions for this weekends Grand Prix.

I suspect that this post will be a little more hectic with all the action this weekend. We'll look to change things up after this one if there is a demand for that.

Session times can be found here

4 races in a row not in Q3 in the clearly fastest car. That's remarkably bad.

FYI, posts/comments from lemmy.world users seem to be federating to lenmy.ml slowly/erratically. I've heard of this happening all over the lemmyverse, not just between those two servers, but a few regular posters are on lemmy.world and so some weekend news might arrive slowly from them due to federation lag.

Track limits is brutal, and I like it, but they need to be quicker.

I don't. These track limits are too brutal. There has to be some margin for error

Hopefully you're done before Qualifying starts.

Sweet! Well not to sweet or you have to go back for cavities.

So weird to say this about a driver in the car that has won every race so far. But he has to, it would be amazing if he fucked up again.

Looks like there are going to be open seats at both Red Bull and Alpha Tauri…

5

Wow I did not expect Charles to get that close to Max. What a lap, but Max + the RB is just too good.

5

I think Max played it very safe with the track limits to avoid doing a Checo

I really hope he got a Zandvoort clause in his contract because he won't be there on performance metrics.

If he's not gone in a month or two he's pretty much guaranteed to be gone at the end of the season anyway.

3

Yeah but getting axed before your home race would be cruel. Red Bull will do it as well if he keeps being slow.

I'm aware that this is an issue for some, but I do not know why, or how to fix it.

From the Dutch broadcast:

0.8 seconds between no.1 and no. 20 in Q1, last year De Vries would have been 10th.

4

True, but this just shows how much closer the entire field is.

2

Piastri fastest without the upgrades and Max having to battle up the field? STOP THE COUNT!

3

How much of the gap between Lando and piastri was the updates and how much was Austria-spec Lando¿?

I find it hard to believe that McLaren have gained that much time from their upgrades

3

According to McLarens socials Piastri had a lap removed for track limits, didn't see on the broadcast though and i don't if it would've got him to Q3

3

Hey all, first post here just as RIF has just closed shop. Just like to point out Perez and Tsunoda start on the same row on Sunday, really hope Yuki gets to drive a competitive car before soon because his results definitely don't reflect his quality this year.

Track limits having no margin for error is crazy. People say that the drivers are able to stay out of the wall in street tracks but walls are easy to see. Lines on the other hand are difficult to spot from the cockpit. Getting penalties for going mere millimetres over must be sucking the joy out of drivers

If only there were some way to compensate them millions of dollars for their frustration.

All I want for Christmas is consistent and prompt stewarding. If they enforce track limits more or less every time, either before the lap is over or during the following lap, I'm happy for them to track it down to the millimeter.

4

Nor Hul Alo the top 3 with half a session done. I like these weird lists.

Where did the Ferrari performance come from? They seem to be really on it this weekend

3

Last year they nailed the Austria set-up as well. Maybe they just know what they have to here.

3

They had a pirelli tyre test after Barcelona race. 314 laps between the two drivers. Supposed to have helped them a lot.

2

If the Haas had race pace, they'd be scoring good points more regularly.

I have to leave right before Q3 starts by the way :( This better be uneventful

2

I will not open Lemmy until I get back and watch it with a nice delay.

4

Oh shit Perez lost his time and he only has time for one run. THIS IS CHAOS.

2

Nobody is going to have any fresh tires left for tomorrow at this pace.

2

Perez only 0.06 behind Verstappen! Looks like he is alive after all.

So... is this McLaren upgrade actually working or will they fall off during the race?

1

Track dependant, they are always been strong here + Updates help as well
