Must show ID to check out at Costco.
So apparently now at Costco, you have to have a membership ID that has a photo of you on it and they won't even let you get in line to pay for your stuff unless you show your Costco card with a photo ID or with a photo on it if you have a Costco card that doesn't have a photo on it then you have to show them your drivers license and they won't even let you get in line until you show this. At the other place we don't have to do this and we don't have any issues with getting checked for membership through the store.
I totally get the reasoning behind this, and don't consider it a big deal. A basic membership of $60 isn't that much of a stretch IMHO.
This isn’t anything new, as far as I know.
I found an article about this.
If you show up to Costco without your ID, you fucked up before leaving the house. There's probably 5 people in America who don't drive to Costco.
Thanks for finding this.
I was at the one close to my house not too long ago and this wasn’t in place.
Maybe it’s being phased in geographically?
Aw jeez, I was going to bring my wife and 2 kids, but I'm only allowed 2 guests.. I feel like this policy is going to be very selectly applied.
I’ve heard about this which is to challenge card sharing obviously. Heading there next week and see if my location is doing it. Memberships are for households so what are they validating? Same address and over 16 is what defines the extra household card.
Can’t say I mind, guess there’s a few positions on it.
Memberships are not per household. Only 2 cards can be issued for a membership. Others in the same household would need another membership or to have one of the members make the purchases. Most of costcos profit comes from member dues
Costco membership cards have had photos printed on them for at least a decade. Is it even still possible to get one without the photo? How are people getting Costco cards without photos on them?
Regardless, I LOATHE carrying around all those stupid store-membership/loyalty cards. Costco started allowing just showing digital membership cards for about the past year...and that also has photo on it.
I don't see the problem with them wanting to verify that you're the actual card holder before you can check out. It'd be different if membership were free, but it's not, so they aren't out of line by ensuring you're the rightful card holder.
At Ontario Costco's you have to show membership on the way in the door, about half the time. And always at the register. Generally they're not looking at the picture, it's about 2cm high on the back, sub-potato quality.
This is mostly about self checkout, the cashier's have always checked the picture. And the greeter is just checking for the presence of a membership card, and if you say pharmacy they have to let you in no matter what (in Canada anyway).
I was at the Markham Costco yesterday and there was 1 person for 9 self checkouts and she was not happy about it. Nobody checked, this may be a US thing for now
I knew self check out would make everything shittier, I hated seeing them being installed at our center.
SW Washington here confirming this was the case today.
I guess I'm lucky everyone knows me by my hat and my award winning smile (also legs, but we usually don't show those or the award for the purposes of identification).
The photo on my card is from, like, 1985. I look like a kid in the pic. IRL, I am a crusty, gray haired old man. HEY — get off my lawn! See?
I can't help but think this is going to cost them more money than it makes them.
