Longer security updates are much more Important than the os ones.
Thanks for TL;DR/DW... I reaaaaally liked the Zenfone 9 but the update cycle absolutely killed my decision and I went with Pixel 7 in the end which was also cheaper.
Looks like there was no reason to wait for the 10 anyways.
as a zenfone 9 owner, i can't justify upgrading. in some areas the 10 is actually a downgrade. but it's a nice device for new buyers, glad asus kept the 5,9" form factor.

The 2 years OS upgrade is ridiculous and a complete deal breaker for me.
Can never recommend this phone. Even a cheap redmi phone gives 2 years of updates.
