New teefs day today! I get these temporary veneers off and the porcelain ones fitted this afternoon 😁

19

I have a fakie front, chipped it off when I was a teen. Veneers never lasted (3 years max), but the last dentist went industrial and drilled poles into the stump and composite over the top, it's lasted almost a decade so far

A woman on the train opposite me is having an absolute blast smiling and nodding her head along to her music. It is so joyous to see. Even better that she’s wearing headphones and I just have to imagine the music!

WTF have you guyz done to the weather what is this shit?

13

Heh true.. there were times where you'd think 'oh.. little super cold dip would absolutely complement the heat and humidity', but can't really have that both ways :(

2

It was amazing. Probably the most diverse, accepting and friendly bunch of people I've ever met anywhere tbh. Has completely altered my previously incorrect guess on what it'd be.

Someone from leadership let it slip that there will be no payrises this year since the business is struggling. That’s fine… except I’m still being paid the same wage despite having a huge increase in responsibilities. Yeah, nah to that. This is what I get for being nice.

13
tone_212reply
aussie.zone

And that same wage is buying you a lot less than it did last year. They can't be surprised if people end up leaving from that decision. Maybe they're counting on it, if the business is struggling...

8

They've already done a round of redundancies and it's stretched the team way too thin, so IDK if they're hoping more people will leave.

4
aussie.zone

Yeah, I reckon so. I missed a chat with a recruiter a last week but have sent a follow up email in case there's still a chance. Even just to get an idea of what I'm worth.

3

Even just to get an idea of what I’m worth More than your getting treated, I can tell you that right now.

5
aussie.zone

Ever have one of those mornings that just seems so perfect and well-rested and you feel at peace with yourself ... only to have it thoroughly sullied by the realisation that you have to throw your natural pace out of the window to fit the demands of paid work?

I am going to do the sums this weekend on how I can move to that 4 day week asap while not taking too much of a financial hit. I always told myself I'd do it as soon as I got PR, but fuck if expenses haven't ballooned despite my best efforts.

13
aussie.zone

I feel you. Partner and I were hoping to cut back next year to both be part time but then the cost of everything skyrocketed.

5

I realised I was a bit fucked when I got to last Thursday and nearly thought it was pay week because the amount I had in my transaction account was what I normally have just before I get paid. That realisation I still had a week to go was not great. Moving is going to be too expensive at this stage too

Reckon a lot of us will be filling our tax return asap this year.

4

Yeah, most mornings 🙂

I could manage financially on a four day week now, but want to get more in my Super first because I'd also like to be able to stop working all together at some point. Currently hoarding leave and dreaming of a better future.

4

Seriously considering that too. I definitely need the breathing space. Most of my colleagues are now doing 4 days a week or 9 day fortnights

4

Damn, all the going ons have been really affecting me recently. The kid getting stabbed on Monday night was the straw that broke the camels back. Of course people have been stabbed since the invention of stabbing instruments, and it happens in every suburb, city, country, and in every decade, year, and (seemingly) month, but it's pretty shit that it all seems to be happening right around my area

This one, and the one that happened in sunshine a month ago are particularly affecting me because on top of them happening in my area, they're both my age too. I'm probably sounding kind of entitled/selfish but it's just a hard nut to swallow that they were my age doing the same thing I do several times a week, then someone decided to just.. end them... Forever gone, all that potential just lost for good

13

As someone else suggested, reach out to some youth support service. Trauma is a no joke. you don't have to be harmed or witness something first hand and it's better if you treat it now. I got to speak to someone last year when I witnessed something traumatic and it really helped sort me out.

6
aussie.zone

I mean, it's not entitled or selfish in my opinion. I would call it more... empathy? Struggling because violence in your area has caused deaths? That's a totally normal reaction. I remember a few years ago working in parkville I was really, really scared to go out alone after dark, because 3 separate women were murdered and assaulted in the parks around where I lived and worked.

Sometimes unpredictable people are scary. And the knowing that there are unpredictable and scary people around is stressful, so it's not surprising that you are struggling.

Is there anyone you can talk to about this? I hate to think of you dealing with this by yourself.

6

The recent stabbing murders of western suburbs teens was not random.

3

There used to be fights among teens and gangs of teens but it's only now I'm seeing stabbings and murders between teens . This is a new thing.

hugs, I know they are your age and your locals but these kids are fighting people they know, it's not random violence so this is what you can focus on. Take care and choose your friends wisely.

4

No I feel the same way whenever I heard about stories of kids dying around my age. It's not selfish at all. But yeah, talking to someone even for a month can help.

six months laterrrrr

Duolingo: Which of the following is correct?

Tu: ______

Parle Parla Parli Parliamo

me: ho studiato italiano per cinque anni motherfucker how the fuck have you not picked up I know how to conjugate a fucking -are verb??

11
aussie.zone

I love Duolingo but it is not good at teaching you. It's one of the things I learned when I studied Italian in uni.

2
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

I'm torn between "sweet, brushing up my vocab" and rage screeching at it asking questions like "Which word means "eat"" and the answer being a generic conjugation of mangiare that literally only applies to a specific person, object or circumstance, it's NOT LIKE ENGLISH, DAMMIT.

2
aussie.zone

It's so frustrating when you make a mistake because of the different ways Italian say eat. Like don't take away a heart! Damn it!

1
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

It's a dipshit way of teaching you verbs. Here's a cheat sheet: all regular verbs in Italian end in –are, –ere, or –ire. They tend to follow a pretty standard pattern with some deviations but that's beyond this comment so we go beginner mode. Also I am using present tense, again, beginner mode.

Mangiare is an -*Are *verb, so the conjugation is thus:

io (I) mangio
tu (you) mangi
lui /lei (he/she/it) mangia
noi (we plural) mangiamo
voi (you plural) mangiate
loro (it / they plural, also third person respectful) mangiano

see how the -are part of mangiare changes with each subject? Not so much for Tu, but mangii is a stupid-looking word so we don't use it :P

Also I s2g it deliberately dips you on spelling when it shouldn't just to fuck up a perfect score. I've seen it fuck me on a fat fingered mishap one instance, then the next say "I'll allow it but you made a typo" once I've lost the precious

2
aussie.zone

Definitely saving this. I try to remember what the pronoun is, like Io is easy to remember but once noi and voi come in, it's like, nope you've lost it.

I've done the unthinkable. I'm cooking sweet potato and potato NOT in the microwave 😱

Cooked off some red onion, garlic, cumin, chilli flakes & powder & sauce, cayenne pepper, pepper, paprika, ginger, salt and pepper. Added chicken stock, crushed tomatoes, sweet potato and potato. Results pending. Will add beans

10
aussie.zone

Arrest this impostor, mods!!!

That actually looks really hearty and delicious though. Do you usually give sweet potato and potato the same cooking time in liquid? (Bearing in mind it depends very much on which varieties are used...)

5
aussie.zone

I have investigited the incident. 🚨 👮‍♂️ Cooking potatoes without a microwave does look very suspicious, however I am unable to make an arrest at this time due to the lack of a handcuff emoji.

6
aussie.zone

But surely that is not appropriate until after trial, when a conviction has been obtained and sentence passed. Locking someone up without due process on the basis of nothing more than suspicious potato cooking methods seems a little draconian.

4

4

Results: hard to describe in detail. I just chunked up some sweet potato and potato, put em in the tomatoey oniony spicy mix, topped up with some chicken stock. Left it maybe 20m, checked by poking with knife, seemed ok but left another 5m, mixed in beans and cracked in eggs, left another few mins. Voila. Tubers were tender and flavourful

2

Real talk.
I think y'all need to post more of your meals. If it's just me posting potato inspired content then people might get the idea that potatoes are actually really fucking amazing, which might increase their price, which I do not want.

How do you say Melbourne and can you spell it out phonetically for me please

Another way to put it is that it's like 'melb' followed by the sound of the 'en' of the word 'given'

5
aussie.zone

The Mel part is like Mao as in chairman Mao. The Bourne part is more like Ben but as if a Kiwi says it so it's more like b'n. Now you put them together Maob'n = Melbourne. Completely exceptable to throw an l in the middle.

Travel money update: from my research the 28 Degrees Latitude credit card is the best for credit and UBank seems to be the winner for best debit card.

Both are free to sign up for and it's always good to have multiple payment options overseas in case one fails you. Both have Google Pay/Apple Pay contactless payment options.

Both charge $0 fees for foreign exchange and the UBank card has $0 fees for ATM withdrawals overseas (although local ATM operators may charge their own fee).

28 Degrees uses the Mastercard Exchange Rate and UBank uses the Visa Exchange Rate with no extra fees on top.

UBank has a $2000 (AUD) daily withdrawal limit, which is up from the $1000 limit I've seen on competitors, and no monthly withdrawal limit like some cards do (Wise has a $7000 monthly limit).

So my plan is to use the credit card to pay for things like hotels, meals etc and then use the debit card for ATM withdrawals and as a backup other payments. This means I don't need to keep too much cash sitting on the debit card balance.

I've done a bunch of research and read lots of terms and conditions so hopefully this info can help someone avoid nasty fees and gotchas. The one thing to note is that the exchange rate is calculated when the payment is cleared each time you spend, so if you want to lock in an exchange rate you need to use a travel card which 'loads' foreign currency rather than a debit/credit card.

5
aussie.zone

In my experience, moisturizer helps straight away. My skin isn't generally dry, except in the winter months. I have skincare regimen (created for me by my daughter) that includes a serum and a cream. Massive improvement and way less flakiness in the cold months.

4
aussie.zone

I wouldn't have the heart.

My son has perfectly clear skin (teenager) with like zero breakouts and does the bare minimum as far as skincare goes.

Daughter is the complete opposite.

4

it's good practice to not touch your face or hair because germs, hard to do tho , it's so reflexive to touch

4

Moisturiser is great for your skin. It doesn't mean you have really dry skin, it's probably just partly winter weather. In winter the air is colder and drier, and that does dry your skin out a bit more. Keep a bit of facial moisturiser around and put a little on after you've had a shower.

Anonymous it may be so I can only say I'm very happy with the person who reached out. Ha, mood lifted and I still hadn't posted this. The oestrogen patches seem to get a little less effective on the 7th day. Mood lift though was due to calls from my sponsor and another person I've met in the program. It's a fair amount of work involved in doing it correctly so I'm glad I'm still on leave for a while. It was a completely spiritual thing meeting my sponsor. I'm starting to sound like people I was deeply skeptical of until now. Serves me right for trying to out think believers in a higher power.

I'm becoming a lot more empathic and relying on my intuition more as it's increasing in strength as well. HRT isn't just life saving, it's life changing and enhancing in ways I always desired in my dreams of being female. Lets just say when I see someone in obvious emotional distress it's fucking heartbreaking and I'm left exhausted afterward. But to feel like that I wouldn't change for the world and to remember it brings tears to my eyes again.

Cats got me up at 4am today. Little kitten sleeps beside me and must notice immediately when I wake up. He's such a little dynamo and really talkative so there's no choice but to get up and play with the little guy.

How come Wikipedia never discusses meaning or emotion in articles about books, movies and songs?

This has bothered me for a while.

Sure I understand that meaning and emotion may differ according to viewer but surely they can discuss what the authors meant?

3
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

So I read up on wiki policy. It would seem meaning is an opinion and can't be sourced.

But what about the original author, is what they say just an opinion? The originator of a work doesn't have a source which they can cite, but critics/analysts and readers of critics etc can cite criticism etc.

To think of all the shitty made up opinions in books written by crap academics I've read but they are considered a source and the original artist isn't. That is so fucked up.

So it's back to watching commentary on dvds.

I've had this book titled "Queer: A Graphic History" on my bookshelf since 2020 and finally got around to reading it. And don't you hate it when you consume a piece of media (whether it's a book, movie, tv show, video game) and what it says on the tin is something completely different? And not in a "oh that was surprisingly different, but I liked it!" way more in a "you know you don't have to force yourself to finish it... right?".

When I read "Queer: A Graphic History" I think, oh it's about the history of LGBTQIA+ stuff. So activism, people, the history itself. Nope... it's about queer theory (basically looking at things through a queer lens, whether it's entertainment, politics, philosophy, general life, etc). And I don't mind queer theory, I did a bit of it at uni, I did an assignment using queer theory. I love queer theory (as a queer). But it just felt so dry and like I was so annoyed that this book that I've been excited to read, is just not at all what I thought it was.

Oh well... next on the list is Heartstopper vol 1 and 2.
