Well, I get what you’re saying, but it does undercut the point a little bit that the family in The Exorcist was decidedly not religious. It was a pretty pronounced fact for the first part of the movie.
Yeah, it's like dyslexia. If the family/community knows about dyslexia, they'll test someone for it. If they aren't aware of demonic possession, they'll just think the person is crazy.
