Really makes you wonder why AI would ever end up doing that. Except maybe to pretend to have emotions, to more convincingly seem human (useful for interacting with the humans).
It's true that emotions did likely evolve for that purpose. However, if you view them that way, they're really just simple rules of thumb. They're what animals had before they developed "proper" intelligence, and they just stuck around after. In our case, we're talking about something which has "jumped ahead" to already having intelligent responses to stimuli. Adding in emotions on top of that is pointless.
That picture has had a rough life.
It's the third time I've seen this reposted on Lemmy 196 😎

Pardon?
Will never speak to computers? Not even yelling at them when something doesn't work or you fail at a game??
Also, holy tongue is what I gave your mom last night.
The self checkout is the worst. It's a windy bastard at Kroger and you can't mute it anymore at our location.
Now I want the self checkout voice to be the Scottish Fat Bastard from Austin Powers.
I swear, Google Home is so annoying with its replies... Just shut up and do what I asked you to do!
So say we all
You're in for a treat when you'll find out that we are also simulating emotions.
And we spend a lot of energy on it, too.

Hmm, technically our emotions are just primal reactions that lead to behaviors that were more successful at surviving than those without.
I guess if it brings something positive to AIs they'll definitely adopt emotions or something analogous
