First day of October and we already have a "Prepare to Evacuate" warning for bushfire (Erica/Rawson/Walhalla area). This does not bode well for the fire season to come. At least we've prepared and invested in the Fire Services properly. oh, wait...

Edit: currently three major fires: Heyfield, Briagalong and Erica.

aussie.zone

Oh shit, Heyfield? Where are you getting that info from, I can only see a record for a fire from yesterday under control in the Vic Emergency app.

aussie.zone

Yeah, that one is mostly mopped up now - they have been working overnight and this morning and most of the trucks are heading home now. The other two they are still sending fresh crews to.

3

Oh cool, thanks for the update. Have a friend staying in that area over the weekend. I don't think anyone was expecting multiple fires out that way this early. Wouldn't put it past a bored shitty kid or adult to have maybe started the fires, though obviously the duration and intensity of the burn is due to conditions.

☑️ Groceries
☑️ Bunnings for flyscreen and I bought nothing else
☑️ IKEA. Acquired glow in the dark space curtains.

13

We got a stick-on door fly screen from Bunnings recently, and having fewer blowflies in the house has been an excellent investment

Garn the pies.

Shake it off

'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate

All timer food right there. I would be imprisoned if anyone found out how much butter I put on those.

4

The cat reckons I've made a mistake and didn't move the clocks forward enough hours. He says daylight savings means it's dinner time right now please.

::: spoiler Melbcat the birthday girl! She's 16 today! :::

I made her tail a bit longer and curlier so it could form the 'golden ratio' spiral. Because she's perfection.

9
aussie.zone

Happy birthday grandma moocat! I like how your drawing is evocative of Japanese block prints

4

She's got her new collar and tag on, had plenty of treats, spent some time in a sun patch and was brushed for as long as she'd put up with it! If I didn't fear the hindmost consequences I would have given her a pinch of parmesan sprinkled on her dinner.

Uuuurgggh...

::: spoiler rant about shitty situation with estranged parent Very much estranged dad has lost all his savings to a scam AGAIN, but he won't accept help or advice to figure these out. Probably because he's hiding more instances of giving conwomen heaps of money after their transparently fake sob story and is embarrassed - image means a lot to him (he is not very smart and doesn't realise most people with a brain don't have a high opinion of him anyway).

None of my problem - buuut i was just reminded today by someone else that the home country has a stupid dumbshit law that can compel children to provide financial maintenance to their parents if they are able to and haven't been doing so. Only cases of severe abuse or neglect are exempted (which "sadly" isn't the case here). He doesn't even have to do anything, the hospitals can start going after children if he can't pay the bills apparently.

I don't want anything to do with that man, I was going to sleep soundly but now I'm restless. Nothing's happened yet but we have to get on top of this, no wonder he's been pestering people for my phone number again this year. I'd renounce my home country citizenship as soon as I got my Australian one and escape it all, if not for it impacting my mums housing situation...

Need distraction... :::

9

hmm. I don't have any advice but we are here for you if you need us that sounds awful.

6
aussie.zone

Jesus Christ kitten! That's shocking. They lose all their money stupidly and then can go after their kids money? Where is the incentive to be an adult responsible for their own actions, like we teach our kids to become in the first place! I'd be fucking livid.

4
aussie.zone

It comes from an attempt to instil traditional values of filiel piety - that as parents support their children, children must return the favour to their parents and support them in their dotage. It is a more communalist mindset and I can see how it could work harmoniously in the past but in our current day and age... I have major issues with this on a philosophical level because no child asks to be born. Every parent should care for their child without the expectation of something in return

3

"Every parent should care for their child without the expectation of something in return."

That is exactly how I feel. My children owe me nothing. I expect only the reward of being able to love them and guide them as they grow up, accompanied by the bittersweet paradox of knowing they must embark upon their own life journeys some day. They won't be around forever and neither will I (in a different sense). I don't expect my kids to be my carer or my provider and I wouldn't ask it of them. But I can see how in the past, as you say, things were different and it would've worked differently.

2

That sounds really difficult and very stressful for you. Can you get legal advice so you know where you stand?

4

My brother's looked into it; unfortunately most legal advice for these things is useless - unless we can meet the high standard of proof for abuse or neglect we can't get out of it - and several others have been in a similar situation. We can't do much legally until he can be medically proven to be incompetent but he's not there yet either, just phenomenally stupid...

Trying to rearrange our finances to prove that we can't assist him could also backfire hugely. We're gonna keep trying to figure out how we can get to him to stop doing this shit in the first place. There is one relative he listens to, it's the nuclear option and there will be fallout but I'm going to push for it...

Maybe unpopular, but I wish daylight savings started later in the year. Admittedly, I like the idea of a spooky season and it doesn't work in October with DLS.

9
aussie.zone

I agree. It seems to start a day or two before the Minipeelers go back to school and we're always a bit befuddled.

3

Always on the last weekend of school holidays, no matter where those holidays may be :(

It's 23.8 degrees. Ridiculous overnight temperature. This on top of having an hour's sleep ripped from me does not make for a good day. I think Im going to need to schedule extra coffee.

In other news I replaced the cats' collars because they were literally falling apart.
They're both preening in an 'aren't I pretty and don't I look smart' fashion. 😂

Well over on ![email protected] someone gave me the idea of pasta and a can of tuna. I might make banana bread too. I just need to move from the couch to make it happen.

Auto-shutoff fill system for isolated tanks tested and true. Filled to 900l, plenny of space in the big ol' gutter fed 2k for next weeks's rains now. Parts of garden cleared, went for a sixer, instabruised almost my entire left ankle, fuckit, break time.

pun unintended.

7

They took it, and although they give it back in six months they keep quiet about what happens to the interest.

My calculations indicate that every Daylight Saving season sees an average of 38 years in interest in Victoria alone (3 mins per person). Instead of distributing this back to the population, I believe this is being hoarded by a small cabal of high profile people and politicians who are using it for their own nefarious purposes. One dozen people living lives four times the length the rest of us get, whilst using their control of time to line their pockets with insider trading and telling everyone their success is "good business sense" and not theft. They count on their ability to push the rest of us down, keeping us too busy working multiple jobs to make ends meet, to stop us from recognising what they are doing and rising up against our time-thieving opressors. We need to fight together to end this tyranny - wake up sheeple and join the fight before it is too late!

12

I'm sitting with a ice cube wrapped in a paper towel because somehow I've managed to connect my chilli fingers to my nostrils. I blame the man because I picked up his fork. This is most uncomfortable.

6

Morning all. Had sorta planned to do a run to the op shop but after yesterday's runs to cough suburb cough to attend inspections I feel like a day at home.
Also had my old uni friend ask to come by to get away from her husband and daughter watching the match as they'd just stress each other out, so we had a nice afternoon and evening drinking rosé and mineral water (not together!) and eating a smorgasbord-type spread. The Persian feta from Aldi is chef's kiss.
Did a test run of moving the old couches and managed to get one into the hall, but thought I'd best stop there in case it got stuck. Plus I haven't ordered the replacements yet. At least I've got a good idea how it can be done - solo if necessary!

Here I lay with those lazy Sunday feels,
No plans planned, no turning wheels.
No problems, no worries, just sun;
I'm more than I thought I'd become.
I've earned this rest from feeling less,
Order has saved me from my chaotic mess.
I'm less stressed, there's more of me;
My eyes are open, and now I can see
The light at the end of the tunnel was just me,
On the otherside of this arduous journey.
But it's Sunday now, no thoughts, just chilling,
Sitting in the sun, no plans, just vibing.

I feel bad for not making Melbcat's birthday more special. Her breakfast was late and the same old food. She did get long chest scratches, a birthday song, was prawning on the bed with her back cuddled into my leg and she got belly rubs. The new collar isn't on yet. I'm letting her run around comfy in her birthday suit. She's moved to her heated bed now.

I'm just on the computer feeling like crap and playing Minecraft.

This Minecraft world is wild. I had spawned in an expansive swamp with a witches hut nearby. It's lucky I play on peaceful these days. The first thing I did was tame the cat, put down a wool 'rug' for it and put fish, water bottle, grass and pumpkin in item frames in the food area. Because you can't place bowls... I added a bed, made it sit and put a gate on the hut. There were pumpkins close by but no villages yet. I've found three nether portals so far.

I started flattening some mountains by hand and with tnt in a bad mood yesterday but that got tedious. Died carelessly to fall damage a few times by jumping or falling. That's been updated to hurt you in this mode. I found a single ice and snow block house in midair coming off the side of a mountain and there was a bed inside but no villagers.

Now I'm just compulsively gathering clay wearing a turtle shell helmet for those extra seconds of breath. You can now drown in peaceful too which limits my ability to explore blue holes until I do something about it. I built an arrangement with chests and hoppers that feed fuel and materials directly into the furnace and allow the finished product to fall into a chest below, so I just have to load the top chests and the process is automated.

I'm kind of bored already though. Too lazy to build. Especially another train line. I just want to explore aimlessly but if I do that too much that means being forced further afield for new items once updates come.

ugh i was just telling new arrivals that our fire season doesn't really start until december... :(

6

El Nino has joined the chat.

My air purifier is almost delivered; might even arrive before I return but I look forward very much to trialling it when it inevitably gets hot and burny again.

4

My phone did not automatically detect that I was in Brisbane and I woke up thinking I'd been a proper slob getting up at 9:30am and something must be up with my prim and proper hosts if they were only just having breakfast as well. I guess I should train myself for when I get back by doing as the Queenslanders do and get up stupidly early regardless because of the sun and heat.

6

Felt pretty bad waking up at 11 but 10 without DLS isn't so bad. Dad's still not well so he just did a COVID RAT but that came back clear. I've kept my distance since I got here because I've been running under the assumption it could be gastro. Must be some bug. Imma shower and GTFO I think.

6

They can. It’s rare, but they can carry two or three okay. One of them usually ends up being bottle fed though

geebus, I bought a real easy peasy puzzle, or so I thought. There is not a single straight line in the whole thing. 😂 2 hours and I've done little more than the edges

apparently this is a highly sought after puzzle for collectors, if it has all the pieces I'll sell it for a nice profit. 🤑

It was delicious. 🤤

and today is day 1 of one month of healthy eating/diet. No snacks and sensible portions. If I maintain good habits and only lose 1 kilo I will still be happy. :)

I'm just doing it as low tech as possible. Less to get wrong and stuff up that way. Less to think about.

Not sure if it's hayfever, or if I've caught some disease, but whatever it is is giving me an awful time. Been sneezing all morning, despite the allergy meds.

Mask seems to help at least.

4

The next two days are hectic so I'm trying to take it easy today but it's proving hard to relax. Jittery and easily distracted. I'm making glacial progress on this book because I keep going down rabbit holes with each new historical or cultural detail.

4

Guinness, music, doggo picking around, and picking grass out of my daughter's oodie. Surprisingly chill Sunday.

Ride Done ✅

I’ll take your meth tailgating tradie and raise the clueless 4WD w family driving at 70km in a 100 zone.

I actually had a very nice late brunch at a place called Cocoa Moon Cafe. It wasn’t smothered in that synthetic truffle that I tend to like, but I really dig the toasted pepitas on the scrambled eggs with mushrooms.

Now decisions, decisions. How lazy, productive or self-caring should I be…

4

Ugh not taking my ADHD this long weekend and daylight savings coming in has made me so sleepy and slugish. I think maybe on weekends I'll just take 4 ADHD meds instead of 8 like normal.

3

I'm not a weather guy, but how the fuck is Sydney's max temperature for today almost the same as Alice Springs... Holy yikes!

3

Ooo, 11.55pm and I just realised it’s either shows or songs I do for the spookiest month of the year… Think I might be back to songs… This evening is well known, well loved Enter Sandman by Metallica. I’m currently on the Drumeo? channel on YT watching how incredible these drummers are playing songs they’ve never heard before after listening to once, or at least part of the song once. This is a talent I will never have.

This is going to age me, but does anyone know if Dan and Al are still playing together?
