What's your local alternative? There's a chain in the North-West called Greenhalch's that's solid, or Cooplands in the Midlands is good too.
We have Parsons which is OK. Plenty of independent bakeries but all quite expensive (think £2.60 for a plain croissant). I don't tend to bother.

Those are lazy parodies of Britishness used mainly by Americans whose idea of the UK comes from The Crown and Downton Abbey.
