Plug for Dr. Matthew Walker's book Why We Sleep, which discusses dementia and how it's linked to beta-amyloid and tau proteins, waste that gets cleaned out during periods of deep sleep. Unfortunately, deep sleep is generally harder for elderly people to achieve consistently due to other reasons he discusses. It's a very enlightening book.
