is it ? or is it being outside in nature with purpose and interacting with others of a like mind? and this in one of dozens of those things.
that said, we're currently in the sixth mass extinction, so getting less to look at and what's left is more same same :(
It's probably learning something new
Being outside and socializing is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here...
It doesn't elaborate, but my favorite example of brain plasticity well into later life is London Taxi drivers.
It may have changed, but they need to memorize every fucking street in London and know how to get from any two places to get their taxi license or whatever they call it.
So they did brain scans on people before and after and saw huge increases in the "navigation" region of the brain even for drivers in their 60s.
Nothing specific about birdwatching is "rewiring" it's just compared to not using your brain, using it improves it.
It's good to get out in nature and get the physical exercise, but there's a limit to how much of even that an 80 year old can do. Plop em in front of Forza tho and they can game 4-6 hours a day easy, getting expontial gains compared to a few hours a week birdwatching.
But you want as much variation as possible, a smorgasbord of activities is better than any single one.
There's more options than the classic "get hyper specific identifying variations of one thing". But that doesn't mean people shouldn't do that if they're into it either.
"Being outside and socializing is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here..."
Exactly. This is misleading. Birdwatching does nothing in itself. The socializing and focusing and exercising the brain is what is happening here.
I actually wrote my thesis on a similar topic. It was about introducing user friendly tech into nursing homes to expand the social circle of residents to slow cognitive decline. It was the socializing that showed the greatest results.
You've completely missed the point...
It does something, just like ever mentally engaging hobby does
I thought it said “shows cognitive decline” and I was about to be devastated.
I went to an aviary a few months ago and it was absolutely awesome. More people should bird watch. How could someone not love birds?
Some people have a phobia of birds
They are some twitchy muthafuckers...
Well I have a phobia of people who have a phobia of birds.
I have a phobia of people who have a phobia of people who have a phobia of people who have a phobia of people who have a phobia of birds.
As far as phobias go, it's pretty easy to live with, but exposure therapy is very hard to come by 🤷🏻
I hope you get the help you need 🙏
Yeah, I'm getting EXACTLY the amount of treatment necessary 😁
