Are transgender sports bans really about protecting women? Survey data tells a different story
If admiration and support for female athletes drive support for prohibiting transgender women from participating in women’s sports, then those who favor Title IX should also favor bans. Instead, 43% of Title IX supporters favored restrictions, compared with 70% of Title IX opponents.
Our findings – that negative attitudes toward women and opposition to Title IX predict support for banning transgender women from sports that match their gender identity – hold even after accounting for other factors like partisanship, ideology and demographic characteristics.
The debate over transgender athletes is often framed as a matter of protecting women. Our findings complicate that narrative: People with the most negative attitudes toward women – and toward policies that protect women’s sports – are the most supportive of banning transgender women from women’s sports.

On top of the control over women, a lot of this hatred of transwomen especially is that closeted homophobes are afraid that they might be sexually attracted to a woman that they find out was at one point a man. That makes them horny and confused which makes them angry so they lash out at society accepting trans people because it confuses their erection to allow people to be free.
Just look at all the easier, cheaper, and more effective things they could be doing to protect women that they are NOT doing, and that'll give you the answer.
It’s about punishing, controlling, and policing all women. Women’s sports are seen as inferior, women athletes seen as “less than,” and when you look at the narrative through a lens of misogyny it’s a lot more cohesive.
Exactly why the focus is only on womens' sports, and not on mens' sports. These folks wouldn't tolerate their boys having to get a genital inspection before they play football, but doing it to girls is framed as necessary protection.
I see this idea a lot, but… boys do and have had genital inspections in sports physicals for a very long time. You do the turn and cough to check for retraction of the testes.
Sometimes. Other times the doctor pushes around on their lower abdomen. Sometimes my kids don't get hernia checks at all at their sports physicals. But that is a distraction from the larger point. Schools requiring a general physical for sports participation - possibly including a hernia check performed at a pediatrician's discretion - is one thing. The state-mandated sex screening we're seeing across the US is quite another. My own state is about to vote on a law requiring physical checks of genitalia, DNA testing, or testosterone testing, all with the explicit purpose of preventing trans kids from participating on girls sports teams. That is not okay.
The only ones that would, would do so for likely unspeakable reasons.
You can also see why these assholes never self reflect because then they might start asking uncomfortable questions to themselves about why they are so focused on hating women.
Cis-women players who don’t fit the establishment’s definition of femininity are harassed relentlessly and you won’t ever see these transphobes raise funding for women sports.
As an adult I can process the bullshit but as an 11 year old I could not fathom shaving my legs every day for soccer or track just to blend. So I quit entirely.
It is insane to me that the wnba is alienating women's sports fans to court a demographic who hates women and wouldn't be caught dead at a women's sporting event. Thankfully, it seems the nwsl hasn't fallen prey to the same thinking, but I am a little anxious about what next season will be like in the pwhl.
I don't watch sportball, but all this controversy bringing a few video clips to my attention has given me a bit of interest in women's sports I didn't have before.
If you ever decide you want to watch a women's sportsball, lemme know and I'll do my best to post about the team and/or league you decide to follow. I follow a bunch, like Liga MX Feminil, that I don't post about because I figure no-one really cares, and I'm generally interested in adding a new team or league to my watchlist if I know other fans.
People come into our stadiums to through dildos at the athletes. Its a hateful country towards women, the wnba is just doing what the public wants. And no one is going to do anything about it. Just like everything else wrong right now, nothing is going to happen to the people doing it.
It just confuses me why all of those people suddenly care so much about women's rights when it comes to the treatment of trans kids or when it comes to how muslim women and girls are allowed to dress but they don't seem to care at all in almost every other case.
Oh wait, my bad, I mispoke, this doesn't confuse me at all it makes perfect sense based on how they behave.
that specific demographic really enjoys women's volleyball and doesn't want anyone to know they're attracted to mtf butt in spandex
Which is also why I find it so insufferable when men complain to their other man friends that their wives don't understand their hobbies and are always getting on their case about being too into their hobbies and spending money on them... the same men that turn around and hatefully exclude women from those same hobbies by making them feel unwelcome.........
This also necessarily incluses the associated type of insufferable man-complaining men do at man hobby gatherings about not being able to find a woman and how it is so hard blah blah blah.
The secret seems to me that in order to treat women kindly you must treat them as equals but what the hell do I know.
Men talking to other men about men's problems that women have repeatedly said they don't care nor do they want to hear about it? Sounds pretty normal to me tbh.
Actually I think it's that third places are dead besides bars, so unless you're a barfly the only place to meet NEW people now that is socially acceptable is online spyware apps owned by Match Group that have an incentive to give you bad matches and keep you paying the subscription, or (apparently) being set up by friends. And on top of that, even when I do meet a woman, not only does she have to like me, I have to like her too. I'm not so desperate as to just take the first being with a vagina who says hello to me, I'm not just looking for sex (if I was, I'd call a FWB), I want a meaningful partnership with someone who loves me and who I love back. It's not just as simple as "oh one talked to me, better have kids and settle down."
The commodification of dating really doesn't seem to be doing ANYONE any favors, but of course if you acknowledge it you're an incel (which is Match Group propaganda, btw, people other than incels can be upset at being treated like a product too.)
(Btw I know I didn't mention the actual article and only talked about the digressions in your comment that I had something to say about, so just for reference: idgaf about trans people in women's sports, I neither watch sports nor bet on them, not my chair not my problem.)
its about controlling women, also allows people to perv on them. many instances of cis-women already been misgendered.
If you don't enforce dollar for dollar spending equity between women's sports and the other ones, everything else is meaningless. I'd love to watch college football lose funding because having students give themselves CTE at an educational institution is fucking stupid.
Just have trans sports and put it on TV and sell it. Ffs people, sometimes you can USE capitalism.
I mean I would 100% watch a LGTBQ+ Ninja Warrior, but only if it was run by LGTBQ+ people and was fun about it while focusing each intro on how the competitor expresses their identity in a way that empowers them.
All of the obstacles could be themed after making fun of conservative culture and how stupidly it excludes people.
I would watch the hell out of this
