China carmakers go back to design basics with buttons and knobs
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MITT) earlier in 2026 proposed updating national vehicle standards, specifying that functions affecting driving safety like those that control headlights or change gears should be physical rather than digital. The new rules are slated to go into effect in July of 2027.

Last three years, the Tesla interface has netted Tesla as the one brand with the highest crash rates.
Tablet interfaces are unsafe and distractive. Let's do nothing!
While at that, it would be nice to return a few buttons to smartphones.
My phone actually has a lot of buttons on it. 5, two of them are programmable.
So it’s happening!
Yep. I refuse to upgrade past the iphone 7 because that's the last one to have a home button.
(Okay, technically, the iphone 8 also does, but it's literally just a 7 with wireless charging, and I have no interest in using wireless charging, so there's no reason to upgrade.)
I have seen some pretty fucking stupid and unnecessary functions in the car that was controlled via the screen rather than a simple mechanical, non-electric even, lever action. Like opening the mf GLOVE COMPARTMENT e.g.
But I've never seen the GEAR shifter being digital. That's absolutely insane.
