How to report employment fraud?

I know a Canadian employer who has hired one person to work, but pays their spouse instead (spouse's name and SIN on the paperwork, but spouse has no actual involvement). There are numerous other problems, too, but I think legally this is the biggest one. I don't know who or where is the appropriate body to report this to and would appreciate direction on that. I am not interested in getting the worker or spouse in legal trouble, but accept it is likely fallout. Thanks.

Edit: Preparing a report to CRA, thanks everyone.

Drop an anonymous tip to the CRA. Thank you for doing your part to ensure our regulations are diligently enforced.

Real talk? Drop a tip to CRA with receipts showing the business is falsifying tax documents. Fines against businesses are an order of magnitude greater than fines against individuals. Yes the guilty individuals will see consequence, as they should (fucking degenerates gtfo) but the business enabling their degenerate behavior will be far more hard fucked, as is deserved.

If that fails there was a guy named Molotov who invented a cocktail...

Fun fact - Molotov was not the creator of said cocktail, the Finns were. Vyacheslav Molotov was the just the soviet foreign minister they named it after as "a drink to go with his food parcels."

Food parcels being a reference to the bread baskets Molotov was airdropping on Finland of course. Did I say bread baskets? I meant cluster bombs.

I'd just look the other way, unless there are people being exploited (which I think you've alluded to in another comment).

Otherwise, as another commentor said: don't take advice from internet strangers. Your government's website probably has a page on whistleblowing stuff.

From what you describe, a couple is trying to survive. Why not let them try to survive. Where is the government at a detriment in this situation? Where are the Canadian people at a detriment in this situation? I think the word for this particular situation is we're dealing with a social "technicality"

Well, as I said, I'm not actually interested in getting the worker in trouble. The employer, however, is taking advantage of multiple refugee and immigrant "employees" in various ways, this the most provable. I put employee in quotes because the others are being (under) paid by irregular means; meanwhile, the employer siphons money for their own self.

  1. is this fraud actively harming someone?

  2. is this fraud going to harm someone?

if the answer to both these questions is no, then just let them be. the game is rigged, playing fair when everyone else cheats is just plain stupid. its likely just one way that these folk are trying to get ahead.

if the answer to both these questions is yes: first, try to solve it like adults and not children running to mommy to tattle on "sis did xyz!! she's in such big doodoo!"

if that doesn't work, then your best bet is to first contact a trusted lawyer. then, take that lawyers advice. do not take any advice from the internet.

do not post any more information on the internet. consider this matter closed to public opinion.

good luck.
