University of Arizona sorority member alleges sexual assault at fraternity house

Student told the university’s police department that assault by two men occurred in August during a night of drinking

A sorority member at the University of Arizona has alleged she was sexually assaulted by two men at a fraternity house during a night of drinking in late August.

The student told the university’s police department that she consensually kissed one of the men at one point while at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house on 26 August but doesn’t remember agreeing to sex, according to search warrant records posted Monday night by KOLD-TV in Tucson.

The sexual assault allegations surfaced two weeks after the university had suspended activities for its 21 fraternities amid reports of misconduct, including assault, hazing and drug- and alcohol-related behavior. Suspensions on all but five fraternities have since been lifted after they had mandatory meetings with the dean of students.

This shit happens everywhere. Frat culture is toxic as fuck.

and this doesn't happen at other parties on and around campuses?

A bunch of drunk kids are toxic as fuck.

It happens but it's not tacitly understood and organized the way it is with a lot of frats.

I remember at university halls being woken at 3am by unknown voices in the house. I went upstairs to find my female housemate trying to tell some random drunk guy she wasn't interested while his crony mate giggled from the stairway. She sounded terrified and he was just leering in her doorway. He even had the gall to call me a prick for making him leave. Just walked into a stranger's house to try and get laid - anywhere other than uni halls that's a serious offence.

Not American so I have no idea what this means? I don't suppose this has anything to do with Greece?

fraterneties/greek usually based thier title with greek alphabet number, its an exclusive originally for wealthy douches, now its for wealthy and well off douches. and sometimes normal people. its an exclusive club, very useful for "connections' after colleges for jobs, especially if you are in prestigious school that is most associated with LAWyers, MDs, professors, politics, and some csuite positions.

Reading this and the Wikipedia article on it, that sounds really awful and barbaric?

Not the commenter you responded to, but while you're absolutely right that it's not just Greek System men, they are in a unique position where they have a certain amount of historic and administrative power, sometimes have their houses as part of the campus, have collective resources even beyond their individual school, have a demonstrated culture of circling the wagons, have power over the social and living situation of their members, and also take literal oaths of secrecy and brotherhood. It's taking the same toxic masculinity that all young men are learning to deal with, and building a fortress around it.

The Greeks need to go, or at least have as much of that pared away as possible, starting with the special treatment by and access to the campuses' levers of power.

Nobody said 'only'. The other hotspots of rape (and rapists in general) absolutely also need to go.

no. but they are a distilled and highly efficient implementation of the rape culture.

You should look at the sports teams. However bad you think it is at fraternities, in the teams' houses, it's worse. And they have the full protection of the university.

yes. for sure. i dont disagree that multiple things can be true. the focus right now is greek life. but the “theme” or essence of the problem is indeed colleges in general!

Typical Red Zone sexual assault. The Red Zone is a term used by safety advocates, law enforcement, and universities to describe the timeframe between the start of the fall semester and Thanksgiving break. Statistically, more than 50% of all college sexual assaults occur during these first few months of the academic year. It's so bad there is an official term. 😡

Paying debt slavery money to get raped by frat bros who will then write an essay about how incredibly sorry they are that they ruined your life. Can't ask more than that. I mean, it's not fair for 20 mins of action, right?

during a night of drinking

but doesn’t remember agreeing to sex

because she was blind drunk. Frat parties attract people like this. Impossible to know if she provided consent, or not.

If she's too drunk to consent, it's not consent

And how does the guy know if she's 'too drunk to consent'? Especially if he's equally drunk.

Frats can get fucked tho I have no doubt there's a whole lot of raping going on around them.

If she's drunk you cannot get consent. If you can't tell when that is, don't have sex involving alcohol until you can.

That's not the argument you think it is. Being drunk making you unable to consent is a two way street and it's not applicable only to women.

Where did I say it was? Of course it goes both ways.
