When I had braces, the orthodontist had such a soothing demeanor that I drifted off like when they shampoo your hair at the hair salon.

The man had a little bit of that Bob Ross mojo.
"Now bite down for me please... thank you..."

Alas, no. He was in the San Diego area, and this was about three decades ago.

I fell asleep once while during a teeth cleaning and the person doing it was pretty surprised. It had nothing to do with demeanor though, I closed my eyes because the light was annoying then I got bored.

"feel completely helpless"? That dentist has got their hands near my mouth, the sharpest part of my body. If someone feels helpless, it's not gonna be me. 😬😁

Now I'm wondering, do dentists get bitten? Obviously a normal person wouldn't try to bite but there are some crazy people out there.

I've never intentionally bit a dentist, but I did accidentally do it (actually it was a hygienist) because I could feel a sneeze coming on and tried to get her hands out of my mouth by garbling words around her hands. When that didn't work I tried to physically push her hands away only to be lectured that she was almost done and it would only be another 15 minut..SNEEZE!! I was then lectured that I should've told her to move her hands. Like I DID!!!! I was pushing with all my strength and you resisted me because you thought I was a petulant child. She also embedded a hook so deep in my gums that it took a week before I couldn't see the hole and then lectured me about the importance of flossing because apparently it only bled cause I didn't floss. Still not sure how I was supposed to floss under my tongue though.
