So, not a cat.

I've heard the theory that dogs act like this because of their lack of awareness of time. It seems like they're just overjoyed to see you back, when in fact it felt like you've been gone forever. It's why they act like that if it's days, an hour, or if you just stepped out to take out the garbage. It's all the same to them, where have you been?

My sweet cat waits for me at the door, even if I've just gone to take the dog out. It's something I've had past roommates comment on too.

You can probably guess that she always leads me to her food bowl when I come back inside lol

Totally a conditional relationship. But to be fair, it wasn't completely full!

Not a dog, nor a dog owner but I think they do it because they are rewarded for it. They don't do it because they miss you to death but because you will pet them and be nice to them. When you're reaction is the same, why would they act differently.
