I'll never forget taking delivery of a new HTC Vario back in 2007. I was super hyped from the moment I ordered it until approximately 10 minutes after I set it up, at which point I realised that I wanted a cool little computer / phone, but had no actual use for it. And ultimately that was a shitty device in all directions.

My feet have genuinely never felt better after a twelve than in those thigh high compression stockings.

I thought it was rice and I was thinking, “Rice can definitely fill a void.”

90% of people stop buying just before they find the thing that fills the void

Oh good, I just lost my last public speaking role. Perfect timing

LOL, I was going to reply "See Also: The Hedonic Treadmill" but then I looked at the Wikipedia article and The Hedonic Treadmill is literally the top item in the "See Also" section.

Also TIL, so thanks for that link!

Sounds like the extreme of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), usually a musician's disease, but anyone can catch it if they aren't careful.

I'm on the exact opposite side - I genuinely don't know what to gift myself for my upcoming birthday, first because I have practically no hobbies anymore, second because I have most of the things I need anyway, third because the things I need are either unavailable in stores or too expensive. Ended up getting myself a pressurized air gun to clean my gadgets, it's something I guess?

No, no, it's "have you tried a more expensive thing"

I don't buy things because I want to buy things. I buy things because I want the things.

If I could just produce them out of thin air I'd be absolutely fine with that. I do not understand people who are obsessed with the actual act of purchasing.

Same here... I don't believe I've ever regretted a purchase, except when I accidently bought egg whites instead of a vegan alternative.

I also usually think about purchases for a long while before making them, so maybe that's why.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to try accumulating power to fill my inner void.

7

Yeah but if I keep doing it eventually I'll probably win it big. That's what my trustworthy local gambling addict told me

If the void is buying things, then you need to ask questions to yourself and seek assistance.

3

Basically the only things I buy, besides bare essentials, are books and tools. They aren't supposed to fill the void, they're supposed to help me learn things and make things. Actually, on second thought, learning things and making things fills the void pretty well.

You reached the end
