Trans women no longer to be placed on female-only wards under new NHS England guidance

In a joint statement, TransActual and Trans+ Solidarity Alliance said the guidance would “not survive contact with reality in resource-strapped hospitals and will create unworkable operational challenges”.

“This NHS guidance emphasises clinical judgment as the priority over blanket exclusion, but leaves individual healthcare professionals unclear on how to safely look after trans patients,” they said.

“Forcing trans people into spaces for our sex assigned at birth will never be the most clinically appropriate decision, and would push trans people away from accessing care.”

So trans men will be forced to be grouped with cis women? I'm sure they'll be so comfortable with that....

Nah they'll just put them in corridors or on the roof or something. That's what has happened in the past.

How is this difficult or unclear? Just care for people as people. Why do you need guidance to tell you to do that?

Because they've literally just been told not to do that.

Sadly a portion of the population still look at trans (and others within LGBT+) as degenerates or that they have certain kinks that make them more likely to be sex deviants, etc.

Basically, people are uneducated and stupid.

One thing that was missed in this article but included in the (imo slightly better) Independent one

It adds that “where clinical needs and same-sex accommodation requirements cannot both be met, clinical needs are the priority”.

Such occurrences, where a trans patient was placed on a ward of their gender identity, are described in the guidance as likely to be “rare” and reasons should be “clearly recorded and reported nationally as breaches of this guidance”.

So respecting the gender identity of trans people is so scary that they have to report it nationally when it does happen.

They mean the figures need to be forwarded to NHS England and reported as national stats, rather than kept at trust level. Not that there will be an alert on the 6 o Clock News.

So I can't really give your comment a free pass. Because in a way it's guilty of the exact same "you need look like a man/woman to be one" fallacy held by transphobes.

Cuz TIL about PCOS, basically when womens' ovaries produce hormones that among other symptoms can give some women full on facial hair / beards. Saw a creator/advocate and actually had to look into their profile to realize they weren't mtf.

...

Also kinda weird that we're defaulting to a binary system after spending years advocating that gender affirming care is individualized and between a doctor and patient. IMO facility placement should also be case by case.

In a real example; a man committed sex crimes against many women, and then transitioned mtf after being incarcerated, but was refused transfer to a womens facility because of their *ongoing attempts to victimize female corrections officers.

....

Quite frankly everyone demanding gender accurate prisons has lost the plot anyways cuz prisons are a tool of oppression in a system designed to chew us up and spit us out. We should be demanding restorative justice that sidesteps the vast majority of concerns our current system creates.

Does your hospital have communal showers?
