The repeal of the Fairness Doctrine and the rise of profit-driven media catalyzed political polarization in America

An FCC policy, known as the ‘Fairness Doctrine’ once required broadcasters to present balanced viewpoints on controversial issues, but its 1987 repeal paved the way for the rise of ideological programming and figures like Rush Limbaugh and networks such as Fox News and MSNBC to capitalize on this deregulation to prioritize audience engagement through outrage and identity politics.

Pretty sure this has been at least partially debunked in that the fairness doctrine had nothing to do with Fox News. It only regulated broadcasts, not cable.

You could argue that there's still an indirect connection.

I didn't watch the video though, I only read the blurb.

that is the argument and its more direct than you would think, Limbaughs provocative broadcast format was quite experimental after the fairness doctrine was repealed but it was a smash hit, so much so that roger ailes used it as his own template for Fox.. which was then copied by MSNBC.. so i believe it's a domino effect rather than a direct A leads to B
