Statistical anomaly

[five characters are standing together: orange, blue, green, purple, and pink]
A study shows 1 in 5 stickmen to be homosexual

[blue points to themselves proudly]
Well I am gay, so I guess it means that I am the only one in this group

[green talks to blue, who looks confused]
That's where you're wrong
I too am gay, you're not the only one here

[orange rants angrily at blue and green, who are both confused]
Well I'm straight and this is not how statistics work, one of you two has to be LYING

[purple asks a question while blue and green stare at them]
Okay but I'm bi, where do I fit in this?

[pink speaks to us, smugly]
Well I guess this proves social sciences are whack and can't be trusted
I love drawing conclusions from flawed data
I am very smart

I'm very offended by this

but that's because I can't read, so pay no attention to what I'm saying

Jokes like this where there are multiple small jokes about a topic rather than the comic leading up to one big joke are fun

Wait, are you saying purple isn't bi? They never insist anything about the statistics.

Bi erasure strikes again. 5 out of 6 bisexuals have been erased.

Well I haven't been erased (today), so you're not alone.

but if 5/6 bi people are erased that leaves 1 bi person alive by every 5 so one of you must be lying. (about being erasen)

Social studies are whack.

Ooh, I have a study performed on 13 WEIRD (a real thing, google it) young adults in nowhere, Ohio, that means everyone is like that, and we should base anything on those findings.

Total garbage really.

Have you actually read the papers like this? Very often they are qualitative studies with a few descriptive statistics thrown in, and the papers themselves are very clear that they describe only the people they spoke to.

It's the reporting that goes off the deep end.

I heard a scientist once added a random constant to their equation to keep the universe a constant size, preventing them from discovering the expansion of the universe early, astronomy is total garbage too.

A more apt example would be a scientist based the universe constant size on the color of their cat's fur.

Either would work, my example has the advantage of being true ( Einstein’s greatest mistake, according to him).

To be clear, I’m not arguing that social science is as legitimate as astonomy. Only that all the bad social science doesn’t invalidate the entire field, it is possible to do good social sciense (just sadly quite rare, for various reasons)

We don't have to exaggerate here, only like half of social sciences are whack (jk, love you economists xoxo)
