Interesting that Ripley is front and centre there. In the movie the characters are killed off roughly from the most famous actor to the least famous one, eventually only leaving the completely unknown (at the time) Weaver, to make it look like she doesn't stand a chance against the alien.

Of course, today she's by far the biggest star in the cast, ironically thanks to the success of the movie, which kinda ruins this clever casting trick. I guess her name was already big by the time of the TV release.

my guess is that the ad is sometime post 1986 when Weaver was indeed the biggest name of the bunch

Yeah, if this is not for the first TV showing, then the cat was already out of bag for sure.

and the role wasn't specifically written for a woman actor, but she got it

the primal fear theme it was going for is face rape, scary for (most) men and women

Huh? Did Ripley have a handgun in the first Alien movie? I think she only had the flamethrower?

I don't remember her wearing an eighties power suit either.

I guess it's time for a rewatch.

back on LV426 the Kane or Dallas had some kind of handguns but i don't remember them being used anywhere else.
