2016: “Storage is growing at an exponential rate, and it’s a huge problem to maintain for IT admins. So what you should do is move it to the cloud!”

2026: “You’re not getting storage anymore.”

They did this to an edu I work with (I guess all SKU) and the price was enormous. So much deleting.

1Tb for each person. You could add up to 5 ppl into Famity plan.

I used it in the family plan before copilot. You could get a family plan code in retail at sale which meant that you now had 1 TB each for up to 6 account for around 50 bucks/year. One for me, one for my wife. A third for a friend and the fourth was just the target for some encrypted backups.

With these codes you could stack this into the future (up to 5 years). I stopped getting the codes after copilot nearly doubled the prices (now it's 90-100 bucks in a sale, 120-150 regularly in retail) and I'm still stocked until the end of 2027. But I just got an email telling me that we now only share 2 TB instead of the theoretical 4 TB. I know that the backups alone are nearly 800-900 GB. I can find another place for them. But then there's still no guarantee that we three will get along with 2 TB.

I wasn't planning on renewing/extending my subscription after the copilot price hike anyways, but seeing how they effectively kick me out of the plan early? I don't think I'll consider them again in the future... I prefer to take those 90-120 bucks and upgrade my VOS and finally move everything into Nextcloud.
